my netbook will not turn on. there is no response--no lights or sounds--with the battery in, but when the power cord is plugged in i can hear a soft but steady clicking sound from the power button area. i have tried another hard drive in it, no luck. i also looked at the ram, it seems fine.

I am currently writing my second novel and find myself in need of a new laptop on which to do the work. My previous machine, an aged Acer Aspire One, struggled through the first book but has now given up the ghost and gone to the great laptop skip in the sky.
So, here is what I need:

My dad's computer was (mildly) compromised a few months ago - he visited "one of those sites" and ended up clicking "ok" to the dialog boxes and installing an unwanted (and very hard to get rid of) toolbar, which also changed his search engine and home page. This happened TWICE, just a few weeks apart. I've since installed a browser add-on that will prevent that particular type of mischief from happening again. But...

I spilled beer on my laptop. I got a missing or corrupt BIOS error on startup and a number of keys didn't do anything when pressed. I disassembled the laptop and cleaned the inside with alcohol wipes and replaced the keyboard. The BIOS error is gone and the keys register as input but in pairs. Is there a software solution to this problem?

My wife's laptop keyboard is messed up. Whenever she hits "b" it spits out 4b, whenever she hits "n" it spits out 7n. The space bar doesn't work. This is a Lenovo laptop. She did just clean the keypad and she used a damp paper towel, but she didn't seem to spill any liquids into the keyboard. Is this salvageable? Solutions, ideas, help?

I'm visiting MacMinnville, Oregon from the East Coast. When I arrived at my motel I found that my adapter for my Dell Vostro 1520 laptop no longer works. Is there anyone out there who could direct me to a retail outlet near here, perhaps in Portland or Salem, where I could buy a replacement? Since I only have about an hour of battery time left, I'm somewhat desperate. Thanks.

Is there a somewhat simple solution to this problem? We recently installed new wireless Internet at home but my laptop (older Toshiba Satellite) refuses to connect to the net. It will automatically find our network and connect to it, but doesn't go that step further to actually connect to the Internet. This only happens with the wireless at home - it works fine with other networks I've tried out. Is my computer just not recognizing the new modem?

My cellphone and laptop are reaching the end of their runs (a respectable 5 years for the laptop, and a measly two for the phone). In the next several months, I will need to get new devices. But what should I do? New awesome phone (Samsung Galaxy IIS or similar) and keep the current laptop pretty much only for typing and image editing? New basic phone + iPad + plug-in keyboard for the iPad? New basic phone + MacBook Air? More on what I do with my devices (and what I'd
like to do with them) after the jump.

Please suggest a thin/light laptop with great build quality and battery life for approximately $1000. An Ultrabook would have been ideal but I need at least 500gb hard drive and all the standard ports (more USBs, HDMI, Ethernet etc.) I don't need an optical drive. Also, I don't want a Mac.
I would be using it mostly for watching movies, college work, surfing the web etc. but no gaming. Given these conditions which would be the best laptop I can buy immediately?
