It's been a while since I have fiddled with computers. How do I figure out which RAM to buy online? My son needs to buy some more RAM for his circa 2011 Acer Aspire laptop (I replaced the hard disk a while ago so it's still got life in it). It's got 4GB of RAM, but I'd like to boost it to 8GB. Do I need to worry about a specific variety of RAM, or is it all the same. [more inside]
What's the decent, cheap laptop to buy these days? I asked the same question 3 years ago, and got good suggestions. I'll buy something this week, or today, if there's a good buy. [more inside]
I have a laptop purchased from Costco at the end of 2013. It is dead and needs to be repaired, but I'm concerned about the theft of my data. [more inside]
I need a new, powerfulish laptop, and I'm finding myself confused by the options. The consensus in previous AskMe's seems to be either Macbook or Lenovo, but I am wondering if there are newer options that I am not considering. I probably need this spelled out to me as if I am a not particularly bright child. [more inside]
I'll be starting a 2-year master's program in August, and I want the perfect school bag! Requirements: 1) stylish, 2) fits a 14" laptop and a couple of textbooks, 3) made of soft leather or sturdy canvas, 4) not a backpack, and 5) reasonably comfortable to carry. [more inside]

Hi all, I am a graphic designer and have an interview with a large company next week. The HR person asked that I fill out a couple forms, bring my resume, printed portfolio... the usual. However, she also stated I should bring my laptop. [more inside]
I have a desktop at home and I need to get a laptop that I can carry with me to campus. I only need it for email, reading articles, and writing. I'd go with a Chromebook in a heartbeat, but I'm very concerned about being unable to edit documents if I can't get online. Cost and weight are major factors as well. [more inside]
I'm sick of the mess of usb and power cables all over my living room and specifically on the side table next to my spot on the couch. What solutions have you come up with to deal with the ugliness of an abundance of frequently used electronics that you want to have handy that passes a reasonable adult living room decor bar? I'm looking for a new Windows laptop, but pretty much everything that I've tried out has a keyboard that just suuuuuucks for me. Please hope me find something I won't detest typing on? Because, um, typing strings of words in succession is sometimes relevant to my interests. [more inside]

I'm curious about bans on technology at the college level. I've read previous threads on this topic but they predate the widespread introduction of iPads and tablets. If you're a student or instructor are there particular types of classes that ban electronics or is it more or less random based on the instructor? For "no laptop" classes are tablets allowed? At work they are giving us new laptops to replace battered ancient ones. There are two choices: MacBook Air or Lenovo X1 Carbon. Which should I choose? [more inside]
What it says on the tin: I'm starting a professional Master's program in computer science this summer. I've decided to get a new laptop, since right now I have a 5-year-old Macbook that I do no serious work on, due to the oldness and slowness (and small screen). [more inside]
I wonder if having 4-5 Word files open (including 2 always, just for for convenience) will drain my Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series battery quicker than just using one file at a time. I wonder: Does more tabs being open in a broswer mean more battery drain? Is a nonactive YouTube tab best being closed till used? I wonder if even having calendar, weather -- stuff I seldom open -- pinned to my taskbar run the battery down more quickly. Same question regarding having several Adobe Acrobat Reader PDFs ready at hand...just comic book pdfs. These things take so little space on the hard drive, so I figure they'd also use less RAM than other actual heavy programs, thus would be easiest on the battery-time availability. Correct me if I'm wrong, but having Foobar, Windows Media Player, and Spotify open at the same time will drain battery faster than having one going, as well as slow things down generally? Add to that the Word, Acrobat, a broswer... Thanks.
After years of use, my wonderful Logitech laptop speaker has finally broken; one of the two speakers is making a loud fuzzing noise. I'd like to find a replacement, and welcome your suggestions! [more inside]

I want to buy a new laptop/notebook/tablet and here are the requisites: - Windows OS - Light and compact (fits in a backpack) - No frills: only need Word, Internet/email, Spotify. Windows 7 preferable; do they come like this anymore? Thinking I could do Windows Easy Transfer, which hopefully will transfer my Word 2007 too. Currently have Dell Inspiron 1525 and similar -- needs to be much lighter than these. Can anyone help by giving some initial direction, including price range...links?
I am looking to purchase a dedicated Windows laptop for running Pro Tools Elite for use in a public program. I don't know much about computer hardware, and I know nothing about audio software. Can anyone help me out with some laptop recommendations? [more inside]
My vintage 2008 Macbook is eagerly gazing at the pasture that has been beckoning it for a few years now. I have replaced the hard-drive and maxed out the RAM, but the poor little guy is simply ready for a well-deserved rest. So - what's next for me and when? Macbook Pro? Air? iMac? iPad? Difficulty level: incorporating moderate music production, Netflix, general web use, somewhat limited funds, and massive over-thinking. [more inside]

In the current MacBook Pro lineup, there's a $100 dollar price jump between the 2.9Ghz i5 processors and 3.1 Ghz i7 processors on the 128GB and 256GB models, but a $200 difference for the same upgrade on the 512GB model, all other specs remaining the same. Is there any reason for this, aside from Apple deciding that people willing to spend that much simply won't mind paying another $100?
So After very minimal use, my recently bought laptop now won't even power up. When I press power button, nothing happens. It's a Asus x205-ta if that matters. I made arrangement to return it to Amazon. Before I ship the laptop back, what could I do to protect things like my passwords, etc that are presumably still in there? [more inside]
So I'm getting a new (to me) laptop and I've decided that I want a refurbished Lenovo, I'm looking on their website and can't make up my mind. Help me decide. [more inside]

The time has come for a new computer. I've owned 3 laptops, all Macs. This one has lasted me 7 years, but it's getting to the point that I can't run, for instance, the latest version of Safari because it's not available for my device. Plus it's getting old and overheats quickly - I can't watch videos, and pages with a ton of photos are a PITA to open, and I can only open about 2 tabs before it starts to wheeze. [more inside]
Suggestions for lightweight 11" laptop? Need to have: full keyboard, Windows, able to handle large and complex Excel files and long Word docs, good internet connection, reliable performance, decent battery life, good for both work and for netflix-type activities, reliable use with external monitor. After a lemon of an HP, reliability is important. What should I expect to pay for this? Which one should I get? [more inside]
I have a 2-year-old MacBook Pro with a 500 GB SSD running Yosemite. It was fine until 3 days ago, when the computer slowed to a crawl. I rebooted several times; each time, it got slow again. I eventually realized that it slowed down when trying to back up to the external hard drive. I ran Disk Utility, which found no errors on the SSD or the external hard drive. [more inside]

Help me diagnose, because I'm not convinced that it's because the battery is completely/irreparably fried. I am computer hardware naive but would prefer to explore all diagnostic possibilities before purchasing a replacement battery, especially if that won't fix the issue. [more inside]
My 3 year old Dell Latitude E6420 laptop needs a new battery. It had a replacement already about 2 years ago after the one it shipped with just fell out one day (!) but other than that has had no battery problems. Anyone know how I can get a reliable replacement **here in Germany**? I would ideally like a Dell or Dell-recognised component as this is my primary device and it needs to be reliable.

Why does it do this? How can I fix it?
I have an Envy Dv7 laptop which I love. It is out of warranty, and a call to HP yielded no help as far as diagnosing the problem. I'm suddenly in the market for a new MacBook Pro. I'm trying to decide between the Retina and non-Retina options. I remember hearing a while back is that the Retina display would lag or stutter sometimes, especially when switching between Spaces. Is that still true? I use the heck out of spaces and usually have an external monitor as well. If you have a recent rMBP, any testimonials would be much appreciated. Thanks!
