I want to buy a new laptop/notebook/tablet and here are the requisites: - Windows OS - Light and compact (fits in a backpack) - No frills: only need Word, Internet/email, Spotify. Windows 7 preferable; do they come like this anymore? Thinking I could do Windows Easy Transfer, which hopefully will transfer my Word 2007 too. Currently have Dell Inspiron 1525 and similar -- needs to be much lighter than these. Can anyone help by giving some initial direction, including price range...links?
I am looking to purchase a dedicated Windows laptop for running Pro Tools Elite for use in a public program. I don't know much about computer hardware, and I know nothing about audio software. Can anyone help me out with some laptop recommendations? [more inside]
My vintage 2008 Macbook is eagerly gazing at the pasture that has been beckoning it for a few years now. I have replaced the hard-drive and maxed out the RAM, but the poor little guy is simply ready for a well-deserved rest. So - what's next for me and when? Macbook Pro? Air? iMac? iPad? Difficulty level: incorporating moderate music production, Netflix, general web use, somewhat limited funds, and massive over-thinking. [more inside]

In the current MacBook Pro lineup, there's a $100 dollar price jump between the 2.9Ghz i5 processors and 3.1 Ghz i7 processors on the 128GB and 256GB models, but a $200 difference for the same upgrade on the 512GB model, all other specs remaining the same. Is there any reason for this, aside from Apple deciding that people willing to spend that much simply won't mind paying another $100?
So After very minimal use, my recently bought laptop now won't even power up. When I press power button, nothing happens. It's a Asus x205-ta if that matters. I made arrangement to return it to Amazon. Before I ship the laptop back, what could I do to protect things like my passwords, etc that are presumably still in there? [more inside]
So I'm getting a new (to me) laptop and I've decided that I want a refurbished Lenovo, I'm looking on their website and can't make up my mind. Help me decide. [more inside]
I like to draw, I like to code, and I need a new laptop. Because of points 1 and 2, I'm looking for something that both has a good, lap-friendly keyboard AND has a digitizer pen. What's the best machine that fits both of those criteria? [more inside]
The time has come for a new computer. I've owned 3 laptops, all Macs. This one has lasted me 7 years, but it's getting to the point that I can't run, for instance, the latest version of Safari because it's not available for my device. Plus it's getting old and overheats quickly - I can't watch videos, and pages with a ton of photos are a PITA to open, and I can only open about 2 tabs before it starts to wheeze. [more inside]
Suggestions for lightweight 11" laptop? Need to have: full keyboard, Windows, able to handle large and complex Excel files and long Word docs, good internet connection, reliable performance, decent battery life, good for both work and for netflix-type activities, reliable use with external monitor. After a lemon of an HP, reliability is important. What should I expect to pay for this? Which one should I get? [more inside]
I have a 2-year-old MacBook Pro with a 500 GB SSD running Yosemite. It was fine until 3 days ago, when the computer slowed to a crawl. I rebooted several times; each time, it got slow again. I eventually realized that it slowed down when trying to back up to the external hard drive. I ran Disk Utility, which found no errors on the SSD or the external hard drive. [more inside]

Help me diagnose, because I'm not convinced that it's because the battery is completely/irreparably fried. I am computer hardware naive but would prefer to explore all diagnostic possibilities before purchasing a replacement battery, especially if that won't fix the issue. [more inside]
My 3 year old Dell Latitude E6420 laptop needs a new battery. It had a replacement already about 2 years ago after the one it shipped with just fell out one day (!) but other than that has had no battery problems. Anyone know how I can get a reliable replacement **here in Germany**? I would ideally like a Dell or Dell-recognised component as this is my primary device and it needs to be reliable.

I bought an Ethernet/USB adapter for my Dell laptop which doesn't have a USB port. Every few minutes the computer will make the "usb was disconnected sound", and then after about 3 seconds, it will think it's plugged back in. This causes a disconnect in my internet. Why does it do this? How can I fix it?
I have an Envy Dv7 laptop which I love. It is out of warranty, and a call to HP yielded no help as far as diagnosing the problem. I kept getting bounced from tech support to warranty to sales to someone else. The call lasted about an hour and eventually I had to give up as I had to leave for a flight. I'm suddenly in the market for a new MacBook Pro. I'm trying to decide between the Retina and non-Retina options. I remember hearing a while back is that the Retina display would lag or stutter sometimes, especially when switching between Spaces. Is that still true? I use the heck out of spaces and usually have an external monitor as well. If you have a recent rMBP, any testimonials would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey, all. I have a three-year-old Gateway laptop (NV55C) that was having battery problems, so I bought a replacement battery from Amazon. I have a high budget for this particular purchase-- as much as I need to spend, I can spend. I'm sure I want a small laptop, about 13", and I'm 85% sure about the builder I've chosen, Mythlogic. I'll be using the machine for gaming and programming/computer science applications for certain. I have some ideas about how to do this the ideal way, and some specific questions about those ideas. Have never used anything but Macs, and know a bit about Macs, but now suddenly I need to order from amazon a quick, very cheap laptop for emergency use and want to spend as little $$ as possible. **This is only for writing and for writing on google docs. ** Any other feature is a benefit. *Can you use a Chrome book for writing? At least on google docs?* I do not want to buy a used Mac, don't want to spend time researching, and don't want to do anything but get it from amazon right now. This can be a not-great computer that will be a family backup after the repair of normal computer. The thing is, we need it delivered tomorrow for writing. (If we order the cheapest PC will it come with microsoft word or equivalent installed for writing?) Thanks.

I recently upgraded my main use laptop, replacing an HP Pavillion G4 that had a dead battery. The HP had lost much functionality as a laptop because it couldn't run for more than 10 minutes without being plugged in. I want to use the HP as a secondary workstation for Google Docs, reading .PDFs, and browsing the web. I have two main questions about this: what's a good OS to reformat onto the system to make this happen, and is the dead battery going to get in the way of it being a serviceable low profile desktop? All of my laptops inevitably, inexorably slow down noticeably, way before they should. I know this happens with all computers. I am reasonably tech-savvy. But my current ThinkPad slowed down in the first three months. I want someone to take my laptop, figure out what's making it slow (software and/or hardware), and fix it all. I just want my computer to not be slow. Does such a person exist in SF? Who are they, where can I find them, and how much do they charge?

In the next month or so, I'm going to need a new laptop. Windows 8 scares me, but I'm willing to try. In the spirit of being game, and because I like the idea of tablets but can't currently live with a tablet as my primary device, I'm considering a 2-in-1 device. Reviews are mixed. I can't tell if I should just get a normal laptop and wait a couple of generations for 2-in-1s to work some bugs out. Does anyone have experience/recommendations? [more inside]

Last Year my housemate (and good friend) spilt tea on my laptop and it broke. The laptop was about 2 years old and worth $1300.00. At the time he couldn't afford to pay me anything, and as I was low on cash myself I replaced it with cheaper tablet option, worth $450.00. A year has now passed and he is in a better position to pay me back- What do you think is a fair amount given the worth of the 2 year old laptop and the amount I spent replacing it?
