I need a new, powerfulish laptop, and I'm finding myself confused by the options. The consensus in previous AskMe's seems to be either Macbook or Lenovo, but I am wondering if there are newer options that I am not considering. I probably need this spelled out to me as if I am a not particularly bright child. [more inside]
At work they are giving us new laptops to replace battered ancient ones. There are two choices: MacBook Air or Lenovo X1 Carbon. Which should I choose? [more inside]
What it says on the tin: I'm starting a professional Master's program in computer science this summer. I've decided to get a new laptop, since right now I have a 5-year-old Macbook that I do no serious work on, due to the oldness and slowness (and small screen). [more inside]
So I'm getting a new (to me) laptop and I've decided that I want a refurbished Lenovo, I'm looking on their website and can't make up my mind. Help me decide. [more inside]
I like to draw, I like to code, and I need a new laptop. Because of points 1 and 2, I'm looking for something that both has a good, lap-friendly keyboard AND has a digitizer pen. What's the best machine that fits both of those criteria? [more inside]
My current laptop, a Thinkpad SL510 bought in March 2010, is starting to blue-screen a lot, and the diagnostics are saying I have disk problems, so I am looking for a replacement. Please help me choose a new one, and possibly get over some unreasonable fears. [more inside]
I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z470, and the battery is pretty shot. I've been unable to find a replacement battery for this model through Lenovo's own site. I also can't seem to find an exact match for the one I have through third party selling. Current battery: labeled Li-ion 20, model # L09S6Y02. Closest match I found online, which claims that it's compatible with my laptop (but I could find no actual evidence): Li-ion 00, model #L08S6Y02. Put my mind at ease, Mefites: is this new battery compatible with my laptop? (And if I should return it, where should I get a battery, because searching Amazon for this kind of thing has been annoying.)

Right now I'm at the airport, waiting to fly into DC, and just realized I forgot my charger. I'll see what I can pick up at my layover, but I would like to a) not fry my laptop and b) continue to use my laptop. I would like to buy the charger after checking into my hotel. I will not have a car. Relevant facts: 1) The X220 is the small Lenovo Thinkpad (not touchscreen.) 2) Staying in Dupont Circle 3) No car
Needing to get a new portable, because the battery in my workhorse laptop is borked, I ordered a refurbished 13" MacBook Pro - which I am typing on at the moment. So far, it seems fine for what I need, but I was wondering whether the hive mind could think of a better solution. Generic snowflake detail inside. [more inside]
The 6th grader has to have a new computer. (We homeschool and half of the kiddo's classes are online.) I was very happy with the Dell that had Windows 7 (stolen out of the car this morning.) Problem: I am the IT department. I fear the windows 8 learning curve. Do I get the windows 7 laptop (super-easy for me) or do I get the 8 and the touchscreen because that's the newest tech? Last laptop I bought was from an online boutique shop about 7 years ago and am in the market for a new laptop (in fact I need three for my household right now). Stop! I don't want a recommendation on what to buy...but I do want opinions concerning laptop buying strategy. For the sake of discussion, let's presume I'm buying a Lenovo x230. The options include: Academic discount through U (I have .edu address and am faculty) Lenovo Outlet: incl. refurb and scratch-n-dent ebay other? Any Dos and Don'ts about the process?
My eight year old laptop is about ready to bite the dust. For the last year and a half it has had permanent residence on my desk as it cannot function if it is not plugged in. The screen must be at the correct angle or it completely cuts out. It struggles to download documents and music. She has been good to me, but it is time to begin thinking about purchasing a new computer. Problem is, I’m fairly out of touch with the market now. Here are my needs with regards to a laptop. You tell me what I should be looking for. [more inside]
I'm thinking of getting a Lenovo Thinkpad x230 to replace my aging laptop and noticed that Ebay had sellers with seemingly good ratings offering machines with higher specs than you can get in the Lenovo store for much cheaper. Is this too good to be true? [more inside]

My wife's laptop keyboard is messed up. Whenever she hits "b" it spits out 4b, whenever she hits "n" it spits out 7n. The space bar doesn't work. This is a Lenovo laptop. She did just clean the keypad and she used a damp paper towel, but she didn't seem to spill any liquids into the keyboard. Is this salvageable? Solutions, ideas, help?

I own a Lenovo Ideapad Y550. About six months ago, four keys on the keyboard popped off and the “A” and “1” key’s require multiple pressings to type. The audio out port on the laptop also broke. It still works, I just have to either hold or tape my earphones inside or it just come right back out. Should I just go to best buy or some computer place to have it fixed? [more inside]

My Lenovo T60p gets very hot at the bottom, under the area where the fan exhaust is. So hot I worry that it might burn something. So hot that my computer occasionally shuts down with no warning. I contacted my company's help desk, and they send me a replacement -- all i retained from the original was the disk drive and the CD drive (which i rarely use). Problem solved... for a month or so. But now i am having the same problem again. Is it possible that the disk drive could be getting this hot?? Can anyone suggest other alternatives?

I've worked as a technology consultant and technician for nearly 17 years and in all that time, I have never been so upset by a technology purchase. About 40 days ago, I purchased a Lenovo X61t (tablet) laptop. One problem appeared immediately out of the box, the other two have developed: 1. Will not enter sleep mode. (Out of the box) 2. Dead pixel in the center of the screen. (developed) 3. Bezel is coming unglued from the screen. (developing) I would gladly have them repair it, but they've stated to me that they will not do it because they aren't sure whether the bezel issue is a defect or not, the sleep issue could be Vista related, and they allow for a minimum of eight dead pixels. Am I screwed? Do I have any means to ratchet up the pressure. Texas doesn't seem to have any lemon laws that would help me here and while I've heard of attempting to contact higher-ups or even small claims court, I am not sure how to do such things. Any advice?

The battery in my IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad Z60t went out of warranty 4/29/07. When I woke up today, the machine says "Irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace the battery with a new one." Is it really damaged? Could it be a broken sensor? Some kind of software glitch? Is this typical? Is there a better alternative to the $159 replacement?
