What did the Nazis call the French Resistance? I know they called the individual resisters "terrorists," but what word did they use to describe the resistance as a whole? (Insurgency, resistance, uprising, rebellion, etc.) This is research for a screenplay - I'm not looking for a discussion about modern parallels, or of what the morally correct word is in various situations. Also, if someone could give me the word in German that would be great! Please no guessing.

Having recently learned that Fritz Lang filmed an entirely different, French language, version of The Testament of Doctor Mabuse alongside the 'original' German version, I set out to find it. The only way to get hold of it seems to be via the Criterion DVD, but this is a Region 1 (NTSC) release only. Where else can I get a copy of the alternate Mabuse? Preferably as either a download or as a Region 2 (PAL) release [more inside]

What does the German word Erbpräfektor mean? I have some genealogical data in German. I don't speak German. The data mentions a man whose occupation was Erbpräfektor. What does that mean? If context helps, he lived in Germany in the 19th Century. My dead tree German-English dictionary fails me, as does dict.cc and Babel Fish.

Help me with a German sentence (quote?). German speakers: is the following sentence a quote from German literature? It's in reference to a picture of a Jewish headstone with pebbles on it. I've decided that I would like to learn German from my best friend, who is Austrian. We have no idea how to go about doing this. We're thinking that I need to learn basic grammar and syntax first, but I'm not terribly concerned with reading or writing German. I'd like to get some textbook and curriculum recommendations and hear from anyone who has taught their native language to a friend.

What sort of daily time commitment is required to make strong progress in picking up a language? Granted, this varies greatly from person to person, but I want to hear about your experiences. I can only muster 45 minutes of German grammar a day. Will this get me somewhere, or am I chasing after wind?
