The superintendent of my building has been dragging her feet for months on getting the building's washer and dryers repaired. In my lease, it says that the landlord is responsible for the upkeep of these items. The management company that actually owns the building and pays the super's salary is also not being responsive. Now what? [more inside]

A potential new landlord told me that while my credit report came back a-ok, an issue came up on my "tenant report." I know this to be in error (the alleged "issue" occured before I even moved in to my current place). So do I have a right to view the report on me, like I do for credit? Whom do I contact in order to fix this item? They were very sketchy with the details, and this whole thing has left me even more jaded about renting. What rights do I have in regards to these "issues" and "reports"? Who does them? Are they legit? Do I have any recourse whatsoever? [more inside]

Our house has a basement suite and I find myself doing one of my least favourite tasks: finding a tenant. The key things that I'm looking for are cleanliness, quietness, and a prompt payment of rent. Neither of the past two tenants we had did very well in these categories. Does anyone have any good tips for finding good tenants? [more inside]

When you own a house and live in it but rent some of the rooms out to other people, is the landlord/tenant situation different than it is for renting out an entire property? Obviously, in the latter case you can't be evicted from your apartment for not doing the dishes. But what about if you live in the same house as the person who owns it? How about rent control? I'm in the Bay Area, CA.

TenantFilter: So I gave permission for the building manager to let a contractor into my apartment to do some fix up work. Not only does she not let him in personally, which is what I thought I okayed, but she leaves the key to another tenant to pass on to the contractor when he shows up. Am I overreacting in thinking that was way out of line? How do I go about responding to something like this?

Does it ever make sense, if you live in a place where you can't afford to buy a house, to buy a place and rent it out, while still continuing to rent yourself, to save up money to buy your own place down the line?

I'm thinking seriously about buying a duplex and living in the bottom unit. Have any of you ever done this? What are the downsides, other than the tenant/maintenance issues?
