Co-op lan games for older machines

We're doing some co-op in-person lan gaming over christmas. Previous years we've played a lot of terraria / killing floor / battlefield 1942 / team fortress 2. We're looking for other recommendations for games that suit some of these criteria, especially newer things we haven't heard of. * run on non-current-topline machines (we have a lot of spare older machines but limited current gamer machines) * drop-in/drop-out (terraria was particular good for this) * low barrier to entry * cheap in bulk (steam 4-packs are great) * co-op [more inside]

Whatever dot local

I am getting some flaky activity with .local addresses on my LAN. I tell CUPS to print to ipp://computer-a.local:631 and it works some of the time, but takes about 15 minutes to print when it does. But as soon as I use a direct IP address, printing works great. What's the deal? Where should I look to start troubleshooting .local address issues? [more inside]

Cheapest way to stream audio over a wired LAN?

I'd like to use the LAN at work to push music out to remote speakers throughout the building. The speakers would be wired into the LAN, and the music would be streamed from a single PC running iTunes (or something similar -- it doesn't have to be iTunes itself). [more inside]

Cross-platform (Win,Mac,iPhone) LAN (& ideally WAN) Messenger

I'm looking for a great LAN messenger for my business with 3 computers. I've tried Squiggle but I've got niggles. Things like how and when messages do or don't pop up and whether or not they steal focus. It seems the messages don't attract attention when they should and do when they shouldn't. It's like it's nearly there but not quite. [more inside]

Remotely View Computer over not-the-most-reliable-LAN (24/7)

My company's LAN is fast and reliable, except for the connection to one building. Inside that building is an unattended WinXP-Pro system running basically one program 24/7, that we need to be able to monitor. Typically, we only need to interact with the computer >1% of the time, but we need to be able to make sure the software up and running, without problems, all the time. [more inside]

A game for 2 players, 2 Macs, 1 LAN.

I'm after some 2 player LAN Mac games. The answers to this previous question don't hit the spot. Cannot rely on speed or dexterity (so no FPS), timers are also out. I have Hedgewars but word games or well-executed card games would be excellent as would strategy (not Frozen Synapse) with a good learning curve. From searches it seems the Mac is neglected in this area.

Wireless LAN driver XP WE250

I am looking for a WinXP driver for a wireless lan PCMCIA card. I have searched via google, but alas to no avail. The card has "11M Wireless LAN Card PCMCIA" on the front and The Part number is WE250-IF. One site suggested that it was either a BroMax or a KingsMax card, but I still couldn't find a driver and both companies seem to have vanished. Any suggestions greatly appreciated - Cheers Dren

I need to host lan torrents for a lanparty coming up.

I'm looking at an efficient way to distribute large files to multiple computers over my lan, I need to know how to do this and whats involved. I was thinking that since I have a dedicated server in my home that hosting the files via private lan'd bit torrent would be the weapon of choice as the file transfer speed increases exponentially. My server is running a version of ubuntu so whatever software I will need must run in ubuntu. The clients downloading the files will probably be running windows boxes so Utorrent can be used and would be preferred. Are there any specific things that I need to turn on in Utorrent to do this via lan or will it essentially be seamless as long as the tracker is my server? [more inside]
