Do dimmer/timer combo adapters for lamps exist? I want to be able to set a timer AND dimmer on my bedside lamp so that at a scheduled time in the morning it will slowly scale upwards in brightness, simulating a sunrise. I know lamps with this feature built-in exist, but can you get an adapter that works on any lamp? I can only find timer and dimmer adapters alone, but never as a unit.

I have a table lamp that takes a three-way bulb. The lamp does not have a standard switch; rather, you adjust the intensity of the light and turn the lamp on or off by tapping the metal base one, two, or three times. Recently the lamp's bulb burned out and I replaced it with the same kind of three-way bulb that was in there before. But now tapping the base produces no effect - the lamp stays on its brightest setting and can only be turned on and off by plugging it in or unplugging it. What happened, and can it be fixed? I've only had this lamp for about six months, and it wasn't cheap. I've tried various different bulbs, but nothing seems to work.

I read a short story once about ten years ago, it was in a compiliation of short stories but I don't remember the title or author. The part I remember from the plot is that there's a magic lamp that gives wishes but you have to sell it for half of what you paid for it. I believe the main characters keep trying to find lower currencies so they can continue reselling it.

I have a touch lamp, which I'm finding incredibly useful to turn off when I'm half asleep. However, I'm also a bit of an eco-warrior. I've been looking online, and found that a small amount of energy is supplied to the lamp at all times. Surely that must be costing me something? [more inside]

I'm looking for a file repository application suitable for managing a software collection plus storing metadata about each program (version, developer site, dependencies, that sort of thing - I'll need to have some custom fields also). This is for private use, I'm not recreating Sourceforge or Freshmeat, so lightweight is better. Must run under OSX or LAMP. Suggestions?

[LampshadeFilter]: I accidentally broke a beloved glass Ikea lampshade and I'd like to find a replacement. I was a klutz this morning and broke this lampshade that holds high sentimental value to its owner. It is a medium-blue glass, mushroom shaped lampshade bought around 2002. Ikea doesn't have a stock discontinued items, and eBay and Googling turn up nothing. Pictures are inside. [more inside]

Okay, here's a tough one. In both The Ring and The Ring II, the morose little boy has this amazing bedside lamp that looks like a flying saucer taking off. I assume the set decorators must have purchased this lamp somewhere...but where? Many hours of exhaustive searching have yielded no results. Anyone know where I might find this item?

This past Christmas I got hung up on the idea of giving my brother a particular lamp that I saw many months before in a catalog from uncommongoods.com. The trouble is that they don't seem to stock it any more, I couldn't find the original catalog and now two months after Christmas I'm still looking for another store that stocks it. I only glimpsed it for a moment while I was l leafing through the catalog and I don't remember it well enough to describe it accurately, just well enough that I remember thinking "that would make a great gift".

I have elderly relatives who no longer can turn or twist the normal switch on a table lamp or touchier lamp. I am looking for an easy ergonomic solution that will allow them to be able to simply turn lamps on and off.
I remember recently seeing a replacement switch knob that was designed with 3 flat blades that protruded from the center of the knob; somewhat like the shape of a modern windmill blades.
I would appreciate any and all ideas and hints.

Fluorescent light problem:
I have a fluorescent light fixture in my bathroom using two, different-sized, doughnut-shaped bulbs. Lately it's been taking a long time to turn on (15-30 minutes) after I throw the switch in the morning. If the fixture has been running for a while, this warm-up time seems to go down. Does this sound like a ballast problem (and thus my landlord's problem), or a light-bulb problem (mine)? I'm leaning to ballast because the lights look fine once they start, but I haven't been able to find the same symptoms on the half dozen fluorescent lighting websites I've looked at so far.

The last time I had to set up a search engine for a basic web site, swish-E was the free indexer of choice. However, its relevance sorting and other features (as I remember them) leave much to be desired in today's world, where everyone expects every search engine to be as good as Google. What's the LAMP favorite nowadays? Where is the interesting development happening in open-source search index and query service?

I have been looking at changing my web development focus from Windows/ASP/.NET to LAMP(Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python/Perl) because my gut is telling me that this is where things are going. Oh, Java should be in there as well.
What's the skinny on LAMP in the real world (Netcraft surveys aside)? Is it difficult to change to LAMP/Java? Is the open source thing really sticking?

Three'fer:
(1) Is there a significant difference between running Linux on Opterons vs. Xeons? Is one clearly better? For MySQL? For Apache/PHP?
(2) Ever hosted with Cogentco? Is there anyone else with prices like that? (100Mbps at $1000/month)
(3) What's your favorite server vendor for typical 2-way 1U systems? (Looking at Dell, IBM, Penguin; where does Google buy them again?)
