I have 3-5 days (starting tomorrow!) in which I'm off from work, and have really nothing planned. As a developer geek in a crappy economy, I'm looking at looming unemployment and/or the start of a freelance career in the very near future. I want to this time making "something" that I can use in my portfolio to show potential employers/clients. What on earth can I build? [more inside]

I know there have been some other questions on SAD lamps, but I'm more interested in whether they actually do make a difference. Anecdotal and empirical evidence are both sought after. Also, recommendations in the UK. [more inside]

I just moved to a new home that has poor lighting in my office. I'm looking for a nice freestanding floor lamp with some powerful bulbs to illuminate the office or another suggestion on what to do. The office is used mainly for reading and writing my law related stuff. I'm willing to pay a $100 (possible more) for a quality floor lamp. I liked this one from amazon but the shade is plastic and I think it might look cheap in person. Points if the link is to something I can order online! Thanks!

Does this lamp exist? I need a motion-activated flood/security light for the fenced patio right outside my bedroom, but I also want it to stay dimly lit during the remainder of the night and turn itself off in the morning. It needs to be weatherproof, and ugly is okay.

I bought a great lamp in Denmark, but I live in the U.S. Apart from rewiring, has anyone had any luck with a converter/transformer that would allow me to use this stateside? The plug notes it's 230v, 50 hz (inductor type BL1); I believe it's a "C" type plug with the two pins. It's a very small lamp, I can't imagine it uses much power. Anyone had any luck with this sort of thing?

Do dimmer/timer combo adapters for lamps exist? I want to be able to set a timer AND dimmer on my bedside lamp so that at a scheduled time in the morning it will slowly scale upwards in brightness, simulating a sunrise. I know lamps with this feature built-in exist, but can you get an adapter that works on any lamp? I can only find timer and dimmer adapters alone, but never as a unit.

I have a table lamp that takes a three-way bulb. The lamp does not have a standard switch; rather, you adjust the intensity of the light and turn the lamp on or off by tapping the metal base one, two, or three times. Recently the lamp's bulb burned out and I replaced it with the same kind of three-way bulb that was in there before. But now tapping the base produces no effect - the lamp stays on its brightest setting and can only be turned on and off by plugging it in or unplugging it. What happened, and can it be fixed? I've only had this lamp for about six months, and it wasn't cheap. I've tried various different bulbs, but nothing seems to work.

I read a short story once about ten years ago, it was in a compiliation of short stories but I don't remember the title or author. The part I remember from the plot is that there's a magic lamp that gives wishes but you have to sell it for half of what you paid for it. I believe the main characters keep trying to find lower currencies so they can continue reselling it.

I'm looking for a file repository application suitable for managing a software collection plus storing metadata about each program (version, developer site, dependencies, that sort of thing - I'll need to have some custom fields also). This is for private use, I'm not recreating Sourceforge or Freshmeat, so lightweight is better. Must run under OSX or LAMP. Suggestions?
