Which FLSA exemption do I choose?

Calling all labor lawyers, even though YANML: if you can classify an employee under two overtime-exemptions under the Fair Labor Standards Act, which one controls? For instance, my organization has employees that satisfy one or more categories: 1. Highly Compensated Employees 2. Computer professionals 3. Professional exemption If I classify them as Computer Professionals, they also have to meet the California Labor Code Section 515.5. If they do not qualify under 515.5, specifically the salary requirement and/or high-level engineer requirement, is it possible to just classify them as exempt under the Professional Exemption standard, which is only two times the current minimum wage in California? Thanks.

How much labor in Cloisonné vase?

How many hours of labor do you estimate it takes to produce a high-quality Chinese cloisonne vase, 12 inches tall? A couple of these vases are owned by the school that I teach at, and I would love to be able to tell my students a ballpark figure of how much effort goes into producing these luxury goods--from making the metal base, to adding wire lines, to filling it with enamel, to firing, to final polishing. Our vases are polished to a high gloss, and they have an intricate geometric pattern in the background. There is no area in the background with a gap of more than 2 mm. The foreground consists of well-rendered flowers and foliage. Any thoughts about such objects would be most appreciated.

What is the best iOS app for timing and recording data related to contractions in childbirth?

There are a lot of iOS apps for timing contractions. The reviews are all over the place. Most of the apps do not seem to time the contractions from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next one, which seems to be the preferred data point for medical purposes. Other apps have other annoying features and problems. Which app did you use and how did it work?

Potential jobs in London?

UK (and especially London) folks, where should a returning US labor union staffer work in the UK? I’ll be returning to London (location non-negotiable) early next year after almost ten years in the US. I left the UK soon after I graduated (I’ve never held a career job there), and I’ve worked as a labor union staffer in the US, working my way up to positions with a good deal of strategic and management responsibility, but I'm absolutely open to a change... I need a clarification regarding bonds and rents

Yesterday, Mike Konczal (rortybomb) wrote the following, "The graduating class of 2011 will enter a brutal job market that will hurt its ability to be rewarded for its labor, and thus lead a full life, for at least a decade. A note to these graduates: take comfort that you must “endure” this suffering in order to placate invisible bond vigilantes and protect rentier income." What is the rentier income he is talking about? Is he saying that bond holders, generally, are rentiers?

Did the transatlantic union merger mean anything?

Two years ago the American United Steelworkers and the British UNITE merged to form what was then referred to as a transcontinental "super union".
