Sharpies on a DVD collection?

Problem: several thousand DVDs in storage boxes and limited room in the movie bookcase. Solution: Vaultz CD wallets, which I've used for my music collection for many years with good results. New problem: how to transfer data onto the DVD discs before sending the original plastic holders into the attic for storage? [more inside]

Bamboo Plant Labels: how to make them last

We have been labeling plants in a public garden with 1 inch bamboo and black text printed on clear all weather label tape. These labels don't last as long as we'd like them to and we're looking for ideas on how to fix this so we don't have to replace 40% of them each year. [more inside]

Good labels (for shelves, drawers, spices etc)

As an alternative to a label maker, I'm planning to buy labels I can hand-write on. What do you think of this idea, and which labels would you recommend? Criteria: assorted sizes down to about a half-inch in height (so I can label shelves), writeable, available easily. [more inside]

Need to print a lot of labels. Need to stay sane.

I purchased a pack of labels that are compatible with MS Word, but every time I try to print, the first row of labels come out fine and the rest are off by various amounts. I am printing to the massive printer/photocopier in my office. I have tried using the manual feed tray and every one of the cassettes but the same thing happens each time. Help? [more inside]

Can I safely include once musty-smelling labels in my label collection?

I have a collection of unused labels (ca. 1830 on), which I store in archival-quality sheets with mostly top-loading pockets. I just purchased about 40 labels that were taken from a printer’s archive. The labels are spotless and appear to be in perfect condition, but they smell musty. They are not moist and do not show any water stains. [more inside]

Professional Looking Labeling/Packaging on the Cheap for Small Business?

I'm looking into opening an online shop with a few niche items, and I don't know how to go about packaging and labeling them. I'm very small time and this is a very small market, so I need to keep things on a budget. In theory I have a color inkjet printer and bw laser printer, but neither are cooperating at the moment, and I don't want really terrible hand made labels I've seen some people make on their printers. I can probably figure out why they're broken if there is a way to do nice looking labels on a home printer, I just haven't seen it. I can do design, but I've got little experience in the physical space. I'm also completely lost on the packaging side of things. Where can I find out about packaging and labeling cheaply for small (micro) businesses? [more inside]

I am tired of labeling my microcentrifuge tubes by hand.

This seems like it ought to be a simple question but I'm not finding the answer myself. Someone here must already know. I would like to buy sheets of printable adhesive labels suitable for sticking on 1.5ml/2.0ml microcentrifuge tubes. Ideally I would like both dots for the caps and little rectangles for the sides. They don't need to be able to stand up to particularly tough conditions, except that they shouldn't run if they get wet. Also, they should be cheap as I am a grad student and would be buying them out of my own pocket. I am just sick of writing the same teeny tiny letters over and over and over again with an ultrafine Sharpie. Can somebody here point me to a product that I can buy that would suit my needs? Clever way to use color labels on OS X?

I'd like to use the color labels in finder more extensively to help manage files all over my computer, not just for certain areas. Because the labels are system wide the names don't always match the intentions for certain folders labels tend to be cumbersome and not clear in meaning. Areas that I would like labels to work well in are: Downloads, work project folders, Desktop, Archive folders and media folders. Labels that work for one area don't mesh with others. Have you been able to figure out some names for the color labels that are elegant and useful in every user folder in the filesystem? I'm not looking for a way to use spotlight comments or another program to handle this - I'm specifically interested a solid naming convention for elegant, useful color label names. Thanks!
