I'm looking for suggestions for places to visit in LA (difficulty level: generally getting around, day spas, costumes, barre, crafting and outlet malls). [more inside]
I'll be in LA next week without a car and I'd like to see my family who live way out in Riverside County. Is it possible to get out there and back in a single afternoon/evening? [more inside]
Whilst in LA recently my girlfriend bought this t-shirt of a smiley heart face. She loves it, but it got ruined in transit. She is unhappy. Can you help us find it again? [more inside]
My son and I are moving to the LA area (specifically Alhambra) from northern Michigan in a few months. He's 14 and I'd like to take whatever steps I can to smooth the transition for him. Toward that end, does anyone in the area (or elsewhere) have any ideas as to how he could start making local/neighborhood connections/friends before we move? I've searched for online clubs, etc., but haven't found much (and those can be questionable anyway). Any advice is appreciated - thank you!
I am at a conference in Pasadena this week. It finishes at 3:30pm on Friday. My flight to San Francisco is at 7:20pm from LAX that evening. I have never been to LA (or the US) before. What should I do with this time? [more inside]
Just moved to LA, and doing lots of street parking for the time being. Would it be worth getting the windows tinted? Definitely more to reduce heat than for appearance sake. I don't want to end up with a bubbly, blue mess on my windows either, and I'm not sure if that happens over time and/or only in the case of sloppy self-installation...?
I just moved to LA (yay!). I've heard you can get lots of avocado varieties here that don't make it back East. I'd like to buy high-quality examples of several varieties and have a taste-test. I've found many articles on restaurants with good avocado dishes, but nothing about where to buy them whole. My location is West West Adams, near Culver City.
I'm more curious than anything else at this point. I moved to LA in February and since then I've noted that CA Diesel #2 (that's what they call it out here) is *either* about $2.50-$3.00 a gallon *or* about $4.25-$5.00 a gallon. What gives? [more inside]
will be in LA for a week in late July but only 2 days are mine. Alone, staying near the Getty. As I have not been in this city for more than a day in 40 years and aside from seeing the Getty, would love any recommendations of food, entertainment, neighborhoods to walk (if such a thing even exists here).
I want my 1BR apartment on L.A.'s eastside clean, and I don't want to do it myself. [more inside]
Cast of characters: two adults, generally located on the Westside of LA. One vegetarian, one decidedly not. We are in search of fun and interesting places for events worthy of more celebration than Grubhub takeout! [more inside]
I was just wondering if the MeFi Hive Mind might know of good places in Los Angeles to watch the live election returns for the British General Election (May 7, and running into the small hours) ? Preferably a British pub.... Thanks!
What are the best novels about and/or set in Los Angeles -- with an emphasis on characters of color, particularly Hispanic?
looking for recommendations for a therapist or specialist in LA area who can help treat my extreme obsession with appearance. I know I am suffering with a type of eating disorder and I think a form of OCD or body dysmorphic disorder, too. it's ruining my life. I am sick of this pathetic problem. there are actual sick people in the world and I'm worried about such trivial things and I can't help it. I want to stop thinking like this and am ready to get help. more inside. [more inside]
I want to make my mom's birthday special. It's this coming Saturday, but I recently found out that my grandparents, who are visiting from overseas, will be joining us that day. What would you do if you had to take people around LA for an afternoon, with limitations? Where would you go? [more inside]
A friend of mine is transitioning careers and is looking for both a headhunter to help find jobs and a career counselor to provide some advice/guidance. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!
My partner and I are considering a move to Los Angeles. I have gathered from previous questions and short visits that thinking of "Los Angeles" as one giant city is both overwhelming and not actually helpful in figuring out whether or not we would be happy there. Can you help us narrow down our thinking to specific neighborhoods that might be a good fit? [more inside]
I need to fill out L.A. Superior Court form EJ-130 in order to obtain a writ of execution for a judgment I have won. I have now been rejected twice because of one field they claim I didn't fill out correctly. [more inside]
Just got a new gig, and want to take some potential clients to a nice lunch after a facility tour. The new gig is in Burbank, and in my experience cuisine in Burbank is limited to Frontier Wok, chain restaurants and Ikea meatballs. Please help me with suggestions of good Burbank and Burbank-adjacent restaurants for client lunches. Bonus points for healthy places where fitness-oriented clients can feel at home.
I need an accountant in L.A., preferably somewhere between downtown and Mid-City. [more inside]
A few days ago I had one of the worst experiences of my life on public transit, and would like to get some feedback on how I should have handled it, and what other people have done in similar situations. [more inside]
Does anyone have recommendations for small-size (around size 4, depending on shoe) women's shoes, especially in the Los Angeles area? My wife moved here recently from Japan, where her shoe size is much less uncommon and so it wasn't much of an issue. But in LA, it seems very difficult to find any stores that stock this size. For something like sneakers, children's sizes are probably an option, but for dress shoes / heels I don't think that will work. [more inside]
So I'm aware that MeFi is probably the wrong place to ask this but you amazing people have surprised me before! I'm looking for the best-of-the-best fashion agencies in Paris, Milan, L.A., and London. Requirement: must represent talent, like hairdressers, stylists, etc. I am not looking for a modelling agency. More over the fold. [more inside]
My wife and I are heading to L.A. for the first time later this week, and we're stoked to see all the gnarly rad things (people talk like that in L.A., right?). But we have a few nuts and bolts questions. [more inside]
I am looking for SoCal music, the newer the better. It doesn't have to be from there necessarily but it has to evoke it. No Eagles. [more inside]
My wife and I (from Toronto) will be in Los Angeles all next week. Being Canadian, we only realized yesterday that this means we'll be there on Thanksgiving weekend. [more inside]
My girlfriend and I are going to LA for Thanksgiving week and since we're not going down to join in any particular gathering, I wanted to query the hivemind for good things to do on Thanksgiving day. Are there any cool restaurants or events we should be booking now? [more inside]
Yet another entry in the "where should I live in LA" files: I got a job with an aerospace company in the El Segundo/Hawthorne area. I'm thinking about living in Palms. Will I hate my commute? Are there other places I should consider living? [more inside]
Hey There Brilliant People! I'm looking for great films from the 1970's or docs about that time that show the sexual culture, gender politics, wealth, entertainment business, interior design, architecture, etc. Please recommend :) THANKS!
I'm a college student in Los Angeles who originally hails from NY. While home for the summer, I discovered two e-newsletters (nonsensenyc and theskint) that featured fun, cheap, often off-the-wall happenings in New York City. Now I'm trying to find an LA equivalent. [more inside]
I've just accepted a job offer in the Los Angeles area - the office is in Marina Del Rey- near the intersection of Washington blvd and Lincoln blvd. I'm now facing the (always fun) process of finding a place to live and figuring the area out. [more inside]
Looking for advice on a long drive [more inside]
Hi, I'm looking for a good, affordable veterinarian for two dogs in LA near Midcity/Midwilshire/Koreatown. Personal experiences especially welcome. Obligatory photo in comments!
I developed an abscess after wisdom tooth surgery. The surgery itself was a little over 2 months ago, first noticed swelling and pain from the abscess about 1 month ago. Already tried antibiotics and I know I need to go to a dentist as soon as I can. I can't go to my old dentist because I just moved across the country. [more inside]
I'm having brunch in Santa Barbara this weekend, and then driving back to Los Angeles where I live. After brunch I'd like to drive for a while into the wilderness, park my car, and then ride my rigid frame mountain bike on some scenic single track (or fire roads, sure) for a few hours before heading home. Where should I go? [more inside]
I'd like either a specific recommendation, or a place to do a search, for an attorney that handles labor/employment/unpaid wages issues in Los Angeles. [more inside]
I've been going to a repair shop here in LA for a while that I found through the Car Talk fora, but have been increasingly unhappy with them. I took my girlfriend's 2002 Ford Focus in to get an estimate on replacing the mirror, and got back a quote of $175ish, $100 for the part and $75 for the labor (meaning, an hour and a quarter for them at $60 per hour). The thing is, there are third-party mirrors for about $30, and from doing the same thing on a car years ago, I remember it taking about 20 minutes with the right tools. Are they trying to rip me off? Is this a reasonable ballpark for what seems like pretty minor work (the whole assembly pops on and off)? I don't have the tools to do this now (I'd need a deeper socket), so should I buy the part and take it to them? Are dealer mirrors really that superior? (It's out of warranty by now, obviously.) Should I take it to someone else? [more inside]
LA Filter: Picnic Tables near Nature? 14 Corridor maybe. I'd like to spend a chunk of Saturday or Sunday at a picnic table near nature. Somewhere within about an hour or so of West LA would be ideal. I'm thinking somewhere along the 14 corridor near Santa Clarita or Aqua Dulce. Also, somewhere with a largish natural area where I could do a short hike would be nice. I was kind of thinking maybe Placerita Canyon, but I don't know if there are any picnic tables there. Vasquez Rocks is fun but I don't recall any shady picnick table area. Bonus points for (a) very few or no kids running around screaming, (b) sunny with shade, (c) wildflowers currently blooming. I definitely need a picnic table becuase of what I want to do while I'm hanging out with Nature.
My wife is working on a grant application for a research trip to Los Angeles centered around getting a feel for old Hollywood and the western part of L.A. (this is working towards a novel taking place from the 50s to roughly the early 90s, FWIW). We're trying to put together a budget for the proposal, and were hoping to get some guidance. [more inside]
I recently moved to Downtown Los Angeles, and am getting a kick out of exploring the neighborhood--it's changed a lot since I last visited in the early 2000s, has amazing architecture, and a fascinating mix of people and different communities. But I'm new to Los Angeles and unfamiliar with the neighborhood... what are the gems of downtown that are worth checking out?
I've been doing frontend web development for around 15 years and want to find a new position at the lead/architect level. I know a few sites to look at, and plenty of recruiters contact me, but what else can I do? [more inside]
I just signed up for Uber and I want to do right by the driver. A service charge is included, and the web site says "no need to tip." Is tipping really not expected? [more inside]
We'll be in L.A. for 2-3 weekdays in mid-March, and while one of our evenings is scheduled, we have no idea what to do with the rest of our time. We'll be staying in or near Hollywood, and won't have a car, but don't mind taking transit. We're especially looking for suggestions for one really very nice, splurge-y place for dinner, as well as great inexpensive places to eat. Also interested in: coffee-snob coffee; fancy cocktails; craft beer; fun/interesting/unique places to shop; anything else that seems interesting. We also really like live shows (comedy/improv/podcast/music), but most of the L.A. shows we know about are on the weekend. And I'm planning to go to Jenette Bras for a fitting, but I'd love suggestions for any other bra shops that carry sizes in the G+ range.
my 11-month old son and i are tagging along on my husband's business trip to LA. staying in seal beach and looking for things to do! [more inside]

Simple as the question is. I'm going on a trip to LA in a few weeks and I would like to attend a taping of Doug Loves Movies and attend the free Sunday version of ASSSCAT and I understand you have to show up early to wait in line and guarantee a seat. So my question to you lovely people who live in Los Angeles and have been/go to these shows is - How early should I show up?
I'm going to be in Los Angeles from June 6 to June 11. I'll be hiring a car to get around L.A. - though we'll mostly be sticking to Central LA and Santa Monica over that weekend (7/8 June). I've been to L.A. before and done most of the touristy things - relying on both local buses and hop on/hop off tourist buses. Because I'll have a car this time, I was wondering what recommendations people have for things to see and places to go that are tricky to get to without a car. Anything within a couple of hours drive of Los Angeles. Thanks.
I know what to wear in New York. (Black) I know what to wear in Tokyo. (Kawaii!) But I have absolutely no idea what to wear to a hip art opening and for a weekend staying in a hip LA hotel. Difficulty factors: poor, frumpy. Please dress me! [more inside]
