Docking stations and KVM switches and Synergy, oh my

For years I've been doing all my work and a good percentage of my play on a single as-overpowered-as-possible desktop box. For a variety of reasons -- not least that I'm starting to give up hope that the Mac Pro line will ever be updated again -- I'm considering making the switch to several smaller, task-dedicated machines. I am going in circles trying to figure out how best to make them all work together on a hardware level -- I can't decide if I need a docking station or a KVM switch or both or neither, and if I do need them which ones should I get? Help me, hardware geeks! [more inside]

6 monitors 10 pc, how to hook it up

So this involves a whole bunch of computers (Linux, Windows (server), Windows (7) and Macs and 6 monitors a keyboard and a mouse. I am trying to find a way to dynamically assign a computer to one or more monitors, and change it around whenever needed. (So no monitor should be hardwired to a single machine) I am thinking of a super duper KVM switch but I havent been able to find one yet.

USB switchbox with switching on a per-device basis?

I have a handful of USB devices that I'd like to share between the 2-4 workstations/laptops at my desk. I don't need simultaneous access to a given device from multiple PC's, just the ability to switch which PC each device is assigned to. Here's the catch, though: I want to do the switching on a per-device basis, so standard USB switchboxes (that switch all USB devices at once) won't do the trick. Does such a device exist? Buying a KVM

I need a solid, 8-port USB rackmount KVM. I do not need PS/2 support, nor a KVM that cheats by converting PS/2 to USB, which does not work with Sun or Apple servers. I can do a Google search, but does anyone have recommendations? I'm on a budget and can spend about $500 or so.
