Crafts for the Craftless

Other than sketching, basic knitting and crocheting, we are not a family of crafters. I'd like to start giving gifts that will inspire family members to express themselves creatively. People have expressed interest in learning to do some type of craft. Assume I know nothing about the world of AC Moore, Michaels and JoAnn Fabrics. I don't know what to buy; let's try to stick to $25 per person. [more inside]

Knitting/crochet books/magazines for preteen

I'm looking for a knitting or crocheting book or magazine for my 12-year-old granddaughter. She already does basic knitting and crocheting. I'm looking for something that will give her directions for projects and help her to expand her skills. I've seen Kids Knitting suggested in a previous AskMe, but I'm wondering if there are other books that would be good. Is there a magazine subscription that might be better? Her parents are very religious, so famous knitting book with the word "bitch" in the title is out.

Best yarn for dog sweaters for daily wear?

I need to knit/crochet my dachshunds some sweaters since regular dog sweaters aren't long enough for wiener dog body shapes. Our dogs would wear these every day (not just as occasional costumes on holidays) and thus these sweaters would be subjected to a lot of wear and tear and go through the wash frequently. What kind of yarn would be best for this particular application? Thanks!

What do afghans from Afghanistan look like?

I'm looking for links/books/a place to start researching to find out more about the origin of afghan blankets. I just ordered the yarn to knit a largish blanket of my own design. In thinking of a name for the pattern I got to wondering whether the word "afghan" as applied to blankets really had anything to do with Afghanistan. [more inside]

I just made knitted/crocheted leggings. How do I hold them up?

I have found other questions here about garter belts and garters, but those probably apply more to the flimsy-ass tights material than what I'm talking about. Yarnie folks who have done this, let me know what you'd recommend! [more inside]
