Can you translate this running-speak for me?

A colleague who is a very serious runner and would like to get into training people as a side gig has offered free coaching to me and a couple of others from work, in order to build up some experience, which is awesome. We've done a few runs so far, and I'm enjoying it. But there's a couple of tips he's given me on improving my form which I don't understand, and I'm hoping you can help me interpret them. But what exactly do my knees need?

I've read a lot of AskMes on what people wish they had done in their 20s/30s/40s etc., and one oft-repeated bit of advice is "OMG, take care of your knees NOW!!" But what exactly does that mean? [more inside]

How can I keep my knees warm this winter?

I have a weird problem: my knees get really cold, really easily. I live in LA, and even in the middle of this unusually warm summer, the slight temperature drop at night is enough that by morning my knees are freezing and I have to put on warm sweat pants (much to the bewilderment of my wife, it being the middle of summer, and us not having AC). where do I go for help for knee pain?

I've been experiencing sore knees after running and I think it's time for me to seek some professional help. Where should I go for help? I was going to make an appointment with my primary care doctor, but I'm afraid he's not going to be able to help me much. Should I go straight to a physical therapist or a sports doctor or orthopedist? I just want to be able to run without pain again. [more inside]

Trying not to run myself into a knee replacement

New runner...with 41-year-old knees. I am doing a decent amount of running for the first time ever, and have been pleased with how much my endurance has improved pretty quickly. BUT, I have a couple of questions: 1) does running surface matter a whole bunch; and 2) how to best prevent knee injury. (More below) [more inside]

My legs & feet are swelling up presumably from too much sitting at a desk.

I work at a desk 10 to 12 hours a day. Lately, I've been noticing lately that my calves, feet, and ankles seem swollen. I'm not in any pain and don't feel any difference, apart from my shoes being a bit tight. Besides taking periodic breaks and walking around/stretching, what else can I do to reduce the swelling? I get daily exercise, but I'm sure the long periods of sitting in front of a computer are contributing to this.

Unhappy Feet needs specific walking shoe advice

With high arches and knees that, all of a sudden, are constantly hurting on the medial side of the joint, I've got to find a walking shoe to help extend the life of these parts. I walk on sidewalks mostly, in the neighborhood. I think a weekly MoTown Dance Party at the local joint is the reason for new knee problems, because I've never had them before all this dancing. I've had great difficulty finding a shoe made with high arches. Slipping in the "Dr. Scholls" type inserts doesn't do it (they slide around too much) and right now, I can't afford orthotics. My mom has feet that have all but fallen apart. She's had foot and knee surgery and hobbles around. I don't want to end up that disabled! Can anyone recommend a good shoe?

Make my knees more robust!

I do a lot of social dancing, and after a long weekend my knees will get sore. I know that it's probably impossible to eliminate the soreness without cutting back on the amount of time I'm out dancing, but I'd like to do some conditioning exercises to build up my knees' ability to withstand that kind of use. You are not my physical therapist; having said that, what sort of exercises should I be trying, and how can I calibrate the intensity level of the exercises so that I am strengthening the knees without overexerting them?
