VETERNARIANS OF METAFILTER: I've been fostering an 8 week old baby through a shelter for 3 weeks, there's been some improvement but I'm afraid there's something seriously wrong, the shelter vet is an overworked outside guy who deals with the shelter babies on the side and I'm trying to help her out. Details inside! [more inside]
Last week I posted about a stray cat I found. I got him checked out by the vet and he's FIV+. Vet said he's about a year old and showing no symptoms. I have two existing cats that AFAIK are FIV- (they've never been outside or come into contact with other cats). What should I do? [more inside]
We adopted a feral kitten with fleas who was treated by the vet. I am still seeing fleas on the floor in the kitten's room after almost a week. What should I do? [more inside]
Now that I have stopped crying over the closure of Gawker.com, slated to begin next week, I am looking for my happiest times. [more inside]
My boyfriend found a stray kitten in the parking garage of his building this weekend and we caught it and delivered it to the local shelter. But I can't stop thinking about this kitty. Should I go back and get this cat? Is this what "time to get a cat" feels like? [more inside]
A kitty followed us home last night! [more inside]
Considering adopting a foster kitten; already have two young cats; live in a 1-bedroom apartment. Cats and kitten get along well now; but is this asking for territorial trouble? [more inside]
I went to the store to buy dog food yesterday, and ended up adopting a kitten. I have thought about adopting a cat for quite a long time, but have always talked myself out of it. Now I'm terrified that if we don't horrible mistake, and worry that I should give her back now she still little. [more inside]
I was unable to resist adopting a stray kitten from a co-worker. During the five days the co-worker had her, she was eating dry food meant for indoor adult cats. Now she won't switch. Is this a problem? [more inside]
I have inherited two kittens (now almost a year old). One of them is continually scratching my elementary-aged kids. I have had no luck training the kids in cat body language, because it seems to go from cuddly-and-purring to face-scratching instantly. [more inside]
My 3 month old kitten began nursing on his own nipples 3 days after adopting him. I've owned him for two weeks so far. He does this ritual immediately before preparing for bed (with my husband and I) and sometimes during the day before he naps. Is there a way this can be stopped, or has it already turned into a (bad) habit? Someone suggested a (pet's) shirt that can cover his nipples. Another suggested "calming" spray just before bed. Is there an ointment I can rub on his nipples that tastes DISGUSTING to prevent him from continuing to do this? Please help!
I'm getting conflicting information and would like to make the best decision for my kitten. When is it best to spay? [more inside]
We have a very active six week old kitten. What puzzles are age-appropriate for this kitten? I need more ways to redirect this cute kitten from tantalizing wires! [more inside]
Hello metafilter! We just brought home a new cat from the shelter today. He's a small, young, tuxedo who's simultaneously playful and a love bug. Name ideas? [more inside]
Our 10 month old bengal kitten plays *hard*. When we're playing, or when she wants to play more than we do, she puffs up her tail and arches her back and does that weird crab-shuffle and then laps around the house. I'm concerned because in my head arched back and puffed tail equals stressed out cat, but with her it seems to be associated with intense play. This behavior is also never associated with attacking us or being aggressive. I'm aware that bengals are, uh, crazy, but is this within the bounds of how bengals are? This is daily behavior. It's another round of Name That Kitten! This lil fuzzbucket is coming to us next week with the placeholder name "MewMew". Which, no. We already have a cat named Goblin and are thinking we'd like a name that somewhat matches. Another entry from the Dungeons & Dragon's bestiary? Germanic mythology? Supernatural creatures? Please help us give poor MewMew a better nom de pet.
Hey, MeFi, it's time for another episode of everyone's favorite game show Name That Cat! [more inside]
I'm adopting two five month old kittens. Yay! Now: what do I name them? Picture 1, Picture 2. The tabby is a girl, mild and pretty shy. The black and white is a boy, super playful and outgoing - he's going to be a trouble-maker! Name criteria inside. [more inside]
My cat is very playful and meows for attention a lot. I’m wondering if maybe he would like a playmate but I'm afraid that he might hate it. [more inside]
So tomorrow we will be bringing home our new kitten Matthew Meowdock. This will be my first ever kitten, and I'm trying to make sure he integrates into our household (including our existing dog and cat) reasonably easily. Difficulty: Matthew is completely blind. If you have or have had a blind cat, what do you wish you'd known at first? [more inside]
One of my kittens has taken to kicking *alot* of clay litter out of the litter box when she does her business. Why? Can I alter her behavior? [more inside]
We just brought home a new kitten, and would like your assistance in coming up with names. Tell me what you got for an orange-ish kitty! [more inside]
We recently got a little baby kitten named Kalagata Olive, and our adult male cat Caliban Party Ghost spent the first week of her arrival just MAD AS HELL about it. He seems... more ripped? He's like 11 pounds-ish now, up from 10-ish before. Could territoriality be making him more testosteroney, and therefore more buff? Is this a thing. (Obligatory visuals: Caliban mad at Olive, Caliban finally getting along with Olive, Thunder Perfect Cat putting up with Olive, Olive in her natural habitat)
We adopted this darling girl on Sunday from the ASPCA and her shelter name is Gossamer. I'm not sure if that's the name for her - sure, she is delicate and light, but Goss is a weird nickname so I'm considering other possibilities. [more inside]
We've been through all the applications, and tomorrow, we're getting a pair of 10-week old kittens from a local rescue. However, while I've had adult cats, it's been ~20 years since I had kittens. So, what should I feed them? [more inside]
Is my kitten reacting to recent stresses in the house, or could something else be going on? Snowflake details follow. [more inside]
I live in a large residential neighborhood in a suburb. For the past 8 months, my husband and some of our neighbors noticed a stray cat. About a month ago, our neighbor noticed she had 3 kittens. [more inside]
I would like to hear from people who have had a kitten that bit past a few weeks of age and outgrew it, or never did outgrow it. Our 7 month old kitten was found outside at around 6 weeks old and therefore missed out on some kitty socialization from his mama and siblings. He bites us (myself, husband and preteen child) regularly, sometimes drawing blood. More details below. [more inside]
My poor kitten(5 months in good health) is getting spayed on Friday! Omg I feel so bad for her. I do not know what to really expect. They have done preop tests and they said results were good. But so scared of the whole experience. How did it go for your cat?how long did it take for her coat to come back?
Mrs Binkleton and Crocket Man are new roommates. Everything seems to be going as well as it can I guess, but there's a litter box dilemma, but I'm not sure if it's in my head! [more inside]
We just adopted a new kitty Croque Monsieur aka Crocket and so far, he's doing really, really well. However, he does something which is very strange - at least I've never seen it before. He suckles. And I mean, he suckles a lot! We've only had him since Saturday afternoon and I've seen him suckle his favorite toy quite a bit, as well as a kitty blanket and my jumper! [more inside]
What is the best carrier for fraidy cats? [more inside]
For years I have been looking for information about a children's book about a mother cat and her kitten and a (coal?) town where it was so dirty that no cat would stay there, despite the wishes of the inhabitants. The mother cat has to make a trip and isn't sure she can leave her kitten in the dirty town, but someone comes out of a building (maybe, where all the residents have chosen names they'd give a kitten if they could have one?), and (maybe beats a pot with a spoon? and) calls out all the cat names one after another in hopes of calling the kitten. Mother cat is convinced and leaves kitten. [more inside]
My beloved little cat (complete with a twitter account) died in the early hours on monday. I live alone and *feel* really alone without a furry, purring, mice chasing feline in my life. Is there any rule of thumb on the right delay between burying a cat and adopting a new one ?
Thought I had the perfect name, but now I'm not sure... The kitten in question is tabby/Bengal, or perhaps "benglish" and deserves the right name. What do you suggest? [more inside]
There are kittens in the yard! Very tiny, very cute, very stumbly kittens. Unfortunately, they cannot stay where they are. Looking for help in rehoming them in NYC. [more inside]
My 1.5 yr old cat will escalate grooming/playing with other cats into aggressive biting. What should I do? [more inside]
I know there are many cat lovers here, and I am seeking some advice. About two years ago, I adopted two adult female cats (Mona and Lola) from a foster home. Recently, I adopted another kitten (Morty) when his human parents split up. We introduced them slowly, first keeping Morty behind a door away from Mona and Lola, then gradually giving him access to different rooms of the house. The issue is that Morty loves to 'play' often by chasing and pouncing on Lola. I feel very protective of Lola and worry and that she feels unsafe. More details below the fold. [more inside]
I recently adopted a 10 month old cat. He wants to eat a lot more than I expected. What is the right amount? [more inside]
My cat keeps unspooling the toilet paper. It is mildly frustrating, not the worst thing in the world but we have tried keeping the bathroom door shut, etc, but I know there are covers for toilet paper holders - I imagine they are for situations like this?? [more inside]
We have a naming convention for our cats - so far they are all science related terms that start with M. We have Magnet, Möbius and Meniscus. Now we have a new little fluff ball - a black kitten with a white tuft on her chest. Can you help think of a name for her? So far we've thrown around Muon, Mendel (too masculine) and plain ol' μ.
My fiancé and I foster homeless kittens and cats in our house as volunteers for a local cat shelter. Panleukopenia just hit us hard, killing all of our fosters, making us really depressed, and now we don't know what to do. Any advice? [more inside]
My adolescent kitten is in heat. Unfortunately, it's not quite hot enough to melt my eardrums, so both of us suffer while she stands next to the front door and yowls in vain for tomcat dick. She seems as miserable as she's making me. Unfortunately, her appointment to get fixed isn't til Wednesday. Is there anything I can do to make her less screetchy in the meantime?
How can we solve our older cat's sudden obsession with urinating all over the house? [more inside]
What should I name the newest and most adorable member of my family?
A kitty has joined my home as of 48 hours ago (photos eventually, pretty sure a coworker is on here and I need to preserve anonymity right now). She's 7 months old ish and now that she's made a fantastic turnaround from being huddled in a corner to triumphant queen of my entire apartment, I need to start getting her acclimated with some things so we set some behavior boundaries right away. Help! [more inside]
Do I need to take my recently-acquired formerly-stray kitten to the vet for a check-up or anything? She had fleas but we washed them off and put a flea collar on her, and they haven't returned. Other than that she seems in good health, and I'm wondering if there's any reason to take her to a vet or not. (I can get her spayed and vaccinated for really cheap, but, a vet visit costs a lot more...)
A friend of mine would like to start a cat blog (maybe with social media add-ons - Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat etc.) which would center around pretending to be her pet cat writing the blog. Beyond this , what would be some fun things for the blog to specialize in? This is just for fun (neither she nor the cat is not seeking fame and fortune through this project; it might be for a public audience though). She turned to me for suggestions but I'm tapped out. What do you guys think? Not too time-consuming or complicated, ideally. Something she could do tens of thousands of times without getting bored (I am trying to quietly encourage my friend's transition into full-blown Cat Lady status, so please help.)
I want to learn how to make cat toys for Captain Tightpants. I've got the design, I know exactly what I want to make... but I lack supplies and some knowledge. [more inside]
