I have a digital kitchen scale on which the LCD has crapped out. By pressing on different parts of the ribbon cable connecting the LCD to the circuit board, I've determined that there are multiple shorts or shoddy connections on the cable. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to fix it, so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for ways I can repurpose it for a fun electronics project. I have some basic electronics knowledge and soldering experience.

Need help deciding on tile for our new kitchen backsplash! We recently moved into a renovated house, and it already has these granite countertops. I'm not a huge fan of the color or strong veining, but they're new and we don't have the money to replace them. Our cabinets are currently dark brown, though we might paint them a light grey or white in the next year or so. What kind of tile or marble should we use on our backsplash? Or should we just paint it another color with somewhat washable paint? We cook lots and there are already quite a few marks above the stove and around the sink. [more inside]

The hinge on our kitchen cabinets has come apart, and I don't know if I can repair it. Replacement is only $6 or so, but I'll have to wait on delivery. It's a salice hinge, and there are 2 pieces, one on the door and one on the cabinet. There's some linkage that hooks the two pieces together, but I didn't install them so I have no idea how they fit together. Here is a picture of a similar hinge, with an annotation of where the separation has happened. Anyone familiar with salice hinges? Anything I can do, or should I just replace and be done?

Found this grub/maggot/larva on kitchen table. (Apartment's kitchen, "dining area," living area are all connected.) Just a single bug, not a whole clutch of them. Should I be concerned? The flow from our (two-handled American Standard) kitchen sink faucet has recently changed slightly but annoyingly - when I turn on the water, it kind of tapers on, and similarly when I turn the water off, it tapers off, taking several seconds to completely stop flowing. This happens exactly the same for the hot and cold water taps, so I don't think there's a problem in the valves under the handles. The sprayer still works, though the switching of water to the sprayer and back when you press its handle is lagged as when you turn the water on and off. Any ideas what could be causing this problem?

Our heirloom (hah!) refrigerator is dying. I'm thinking of purchasing an Electrolux ICON Professional 16.5 cu. ft. refrigerator, with plans to buy the matching freezer later (I have an upright freezer already that will suffice for the time being).
