We're going to be buying a refrigerator, a gas stove, an above-range microwave and a dishwasher shortly. All mid-range
. What are some good, not-obviously things to note? [more inside]

I need to replace the power cable for my rice cooker. The kitchen area of my apt is pretty small, and the cable was stupidly close to the stove and I burned a hole through the insulation. On the end of the cable that connects to the mains, it says 16a 250v while the end that plugs into the cooker says 10a 250v. The appliance itself is labeled as 10a 250v. [more inside]

There is a great spot in my small kitchen next to my refrigerator for a dishwasher. I would like to avoid one of those portable ones with wheels that you have to roll out and hook up to the sink. What are my options? [more inside]

I am beginning the process of building a home that is going to be fairly contemporary in style. However, we are on a budget, so I am looking for your suggestions regarding the best budget-friendly, fixtures, finishes, appliances, etc. that would go in a contemporary home. I am really interested in clean lines, stuff that is well made, looks nice, but is affordable. [more inside]

I live in a small studio apartment with an alcove "kitchen": sink, hot plate, mini fridge. I eat most meals at the cafeteria my employer provides. My counter space is extremely limited. What is the most functional and versatile appliance or device I can buy for those occasions when I want to cook something? (Assume I already have various pots, pans, and small kitchen tools.)

The cabinets are already installed at floor level. Do we tile under the range and dishwasher or up to them? Also the dishwasher is already installed, but if we have to, we can take it out and tile under it. Opinions?

What do you know about countertop dishwashers?
What should *I* know about them before purchasing one?
Where can I find a selection (or heck, even 1) in stock at a brick'n'mortar here in Los Angeles?
and, barring a local retailer, Which countertop dishwasher should I buy online? [more inside]

DIY Seltzer: We love seltzer/sparkling water at my house. We buy lots of it from the store. This seems wasteful. I've seen other questions asking about CO2 etc, but I'm interested in knowing what your experience has been with certain vendors/equipment. [more inside]

As I've become more and more interested in cooking my satisfaction with my electric inductive cooktop has gone proportionately down. I scored an awesome deal on a used gas cooktop on Craigslist and now I need to hook it up. I'm fairly handy, if not very experienced, but my brother-in-law will be helping and he's very competent.
Please, no advice to hire a professional. I've researched the safety aspect of this and I'm confident that we can handle this safely. [more inside]

How can one tell the production history of a microwave oven? I bought a GE JES1656SJ at Best Buy today. Got it for a good price. Went home, Googled the model number. Very few hits. Nothing at epinions or consumerreview. Not sold at amazon. On the GE website itself, I found its page (with some effort). On this page it said "Sold Only at Lowe's" (the chain hardware/appliance stores). The fact that I bought this elsewhere notwithstanding, is there anyway to find out if this is an old/defective/dangerous/unpopular model? Is it unusual to produce specific models for certain outlets? The oven is still in the box pending the results of my investigation. Thanks.

I'm in the market for a new dishwasher. (The machine kind, not the employee kind, silly.) This is new territory for me. I'm looking to spend $500 or less. What factors should I consider?
