Late last year a few friends and I started an informal bartering club. My contribution is baked goods, usually bread of some kind, but as the first heatwave of the season kicked in I realized I’m going to need an alternative to oven baking. Cooks and bakers of MeFi, hope me some bready recipes that I can make during red flag season. [more inside]

Here and there, around the web and (much less) in person, I've heard of small appliances spontaneously turning themselves on. Googling has turned up some product recall notices and grisly photos of burns, but I'm more interested in personal experiences--have you ever experienced a small appliance spontaneously turning on? What happened? Was there loss of property/limb/life involved? [more inside]

I bought what I thought was a more powerful range hood but it moves very little air at all. [more inside]

My Mom just moved into an apartment with an electric stove, the very first electric stove she's had in seventy-one years of being alive. She's finding the learning curve a little daunting. Could you share some tips and tricks that would make the adjustment a little easier, things that you had to learn while transitioning from the gas stove to the electric stove? [more inside]

I am remodeling my kitchen. All walls are traditional square 50s white tile with black borders from floor to ceiling. The counters will be white linoleum, the cupboards white, and the floor will be wood (brown). The stove is a white 1940's gas range. Should I buy white fridge and dishwasher, or stainless steel? I'm leaning toward white to maintain continuity with the cupboards but think stainless steel will keep the look more modern, but the entire house (a 1915 bungalow) has a strong retro vibe. Pastel appliances are out of my price range. What do you think?

Our heirloom (hah!) refrigerator is dying. I'm thinking of purchasing an Electrolux ICON Professional
16.5 cu. ft. refrigerator, with plans to buy the matching freezer later (I have an upright freezer already that will suffice for the time being). Does anyone have any experience with this product? Something similar you think might be better or might want to warn me away from?
My biggest concerns are for quality of construction and reliability, but I'd love to hear any/all thoughts you might have about this appliance. Thanks!

My just-out-of-warranty electric cooktop died recently, and my handyman came up with the idea that it was feasible to replace it with a gas cooktop. Today, the project was finished up, and I now have this
dandy cooktop in my kitchen.
The only problem is that I've never cooked on gas before (other than on a propane grill). [more inside]

I was thinking about buying a commercial range for my kitchen - a Vulcan costs half as much as a Wolf and has the same output, same safety rating, same dependability and two folks I know who use them love them. However, many of the sellers will only sell to a commercial entity - not just for tax purposes, although I could understand that, but because they tell me my insurance company won't allow it, that I'll need fireproof floors, and industrial venting etc. [more inside]

Any recommendations for a good Juicer? Durability, efficiency, and ease of cleaning are especially desired features, but I'd like to keep the cost under $100 if possible, or in that neighborhood if not.

I burned out my roommate's electric food chopper by trying cheese, so I need to get her a new one. Can you recommend a fairly priced model that won't go all stinky and smoky when I stuff it full of Wisconsin's best?
