I'm trying to help out a friend who recently lost all his books. His personal situation is such that he would benefit from a Kindle or other ebook reader, but there are complications including not having a credit card. [more inside]
I'm planning to buy an Amazon Fire (for mostly reading Kindle e-books) and, in three months, renew my smartphone. Then I saw a lady with a Samsung "phablet" (I guess a Galaxy E7) and the lightbulb turned on! [more inside]
...and then fold back close when I'm done. My 1st gen tablet had a more stiff cover so the bottom half would support the kindle. I could watch movies at a higher eye level while on a treadmill or elliptical. [more inside]
Will be visiting US soon, and want to use this opportunity to solve our one-Kindle-two-readers-in-the-house problem. I am dithering over the Voyage, or just getting another Paperwhite. (Also, free, related BONUS question!) [more inside]
Hi, I'm a voracious reader in the midst of a 30-day trial for Kindle Unlimited (I'm thinking it probably isn't a keeper). It seems like lots of the books available are from self-published or otherwise obscure authors and don't have many reviews. Has anyone come across an obscure book on Kindle Unlimited that they'd recommend? I'm pretty genre agnostic (I'd rather read a good romance novel than a bad science fiction novel), though I'm not generally interested in urban fantasy.

Why are the ads on my Kindle so completely off-base? I'm a BIG Amazon user. I buy tons of products of all sorts, many books, and many, many ebooks. So why does Amazon do such a terrible job of targeting ads to me via my Kindle? [more inside]
Mostly what it says on the tin. I read a lot, and I read almost everything on my kindle - I'm missing the part of my brain that makes people attached to print books. I'm curious if anyone has tried Kindle Unlimited, and if you liked it or felt it was worthwhile. Let's bracket for now any concerns about Amazon as a company and its effect on publishing/writing. I'm familiar with those arguments, and they'll factor separately into whether or not I decide to sign up. Thanks!
I am considering buying my bookworm 7 year old girl a kindle for her 8th birthday. If any other mefites have done this or considered it I'd like to hear your opinions on it. [more inside]
A few months ago I started selling kinky eBooks for the Kindle, and it's been great. I'm paying my rent doing something I enjoy! But tonight I read this Salon.com article, and it's scary as hell. Amazon is reportedly testing Kindle Unlimited, a service allowing readers to download unlimited books for a flat monthly fee. I've spent hours tonight trying to determine how this will affect self-publishers. Can anybody walk me through the likely scenarios, and talk me down from this panic attack? [more inside]
My son has asked for a Kindle "with a boy cover" for his birthday. I anticipate that he'd be mainly using it to read in bed, but wonder what I'm missing by dismissing the Kindle Fire out of hand. He has access to the much in demand family IPad, so he's not tablet free. I am a huge, huge fan of my Paperwhite, and don't know much about the Fire. So, any comparisons? Any neat points about the Fire? [more inside]
How do I set the time zone for my Kindle Fire? Right now it's displaying UTC, I think, instead of UTC-7 which is my time zone. I just turned on "Location-based services" and that didn't help.
Next week, I am taking the Empire Builder from Chicago to Portland, Oregon. In a previous question about train travel, someone suggested reading books that take place along your train route. This is an idea I love ... and I have at least 47 hours to pass! So: what are your favorite (kindle) books which occur in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, or Oregon? Bonus for rural themes. I am not a big mystery fan, but if it is particularly excellent, I'll read it. Romance is out. Otherwise, I'm open to anything!
Thinking about buying a Kindle Paperwhite. But do I neeeeeeed one? [more inside]

I have a client who wrote a very unique book. We think the digital version would work best as a website rather than e.g. Kindle or epub or PDF. How do we get people to pay for a book in website form? Are there other authors that do this? [more inside]
My book is in an HTML file, not Word. I'm going to use kindlegen to convert it. Everything is working great, except I can't figure out how to include the cover, start page, and table of contents. Amazon's directions are spectacularly opaque. Where can I go to find out what to do?
I need a new book to read for my upcoming trip (including long flights). It must be available on kindle. Details inside, of the kind of book I am looking for. [more inside]
After spending about two weeks using a relative's Kindle Fire HD 8.9 as a video playing device to distract our young son, my wife and I are interested in getting a mid-sized tablet of our own, to double as a video player and portable computer. The Nook HD+ is comparable, and right now, much cheaper. Is there something I'm missing about the Kindle Fire, or are most mid-sized tablets fairly similar? [more inside]

I was wondering if there's a DIY fix for a kindle screen (e-ink, not touchscreen). Mine's broken and out of warranty.
I recently bought a Kindle Fire and want to use Silverlight on it (or some analogue, such as Moonlight). All my google searching indicates that there are a whole host of technical difficulties involved, and there is all sorts of unconfirmed speculation like "Well, maybe if you sideloaded Firefox and then installed Moonlight... that might work... possibly." I don't like messing around with new device software based on random people's hypotheses. Has anybody successfully managed some way to do this which you can personally confirm worked on your Kindle device?

I want a cheap e-reader for reading longform articles in bed. It must work with Readability or InstaPaper or the like. It does not need to do anything else like games or surfing the intertubes. I have an iPhone for that. Do I want a Kindle?
Our new Kindle Fire is great, but it tells us we need to update our Flash Player when we want to watch Glee. If I try to DL the new file from the Adobe message, it seems to stall right after it starts. If I go to settings, it shows that Flash is " Always on". I haven't tried any other shows on FOX, but it seems to work fine for NBC stuff. Any Ideas?

When I had the first generation Kindle I had an e-book that was basically an index of free e-books that were in the public domain, and the title of each book was actually a hyper-link that would let you download a copy of said book right to the home screen of the Kindle. Does anyone know where I could get another copy of that book? [more inside]
