Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Fire for 10yo boy

My son has asked for a Kindle "with a boy cover" for his birthday. I anticipate that he'd be mainly using it to read in bed, but wonder what I'm missing by dismissing the Kindle Fire out of hand. He has access to the much in demand family IPad, so he's not tablet free. I am a huge, huge fan of my Paperwhite, and don't know much about the Fire. So, any comparisons? Any neat points about the Fire? [more inside]

Kindle time zone

How do I set the time zone for my Kindle Fire? Right now it's displaying UTC, I think, instead of UTC-7 which is my time zone. I just turned on "Location-based services" and that didn't help.

Books to take a train by

Next week, I am taking the Empire Builder from Chicago to Portland, Oregon. In a previous question about train travel, someone suggested reading books that take place along your train route. This is an idea I love ... and I have at least 47 hours to pass! So: what are your favorite (kindle) books which occur in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, or Oregon? Bonus for rural themes. I am not a big mystery fan, but if it is particularly excellent, I'll read it. Romance is out. Otherwise, I'm open to anything!

Where can I get clear instructions for this type of Kindle publishing?

My book is in an HTML file, not Word. I'm going to use kindlegen to convert it. Everything is working great, except I can't figure out how to include the cover, start page, and table of contents. Amazon's directions are spectacularly opaque. Where can I go to find out what to do?

Medium-sized tablet. You know, for the kid(s).

After spending about two weeks using a relative's Kindle Fire HD 8.9 as a video playing device to distract our young son, my wife and I are interested in getting a mid-sized tablet of our own, to double as a video player and portable computer. The Nook HD+ is comparable, and right now, much cheaper. Is there something I'm missing about the Kindle Fire, or are most mid-sized tablets fairly similar? [more inside]

Have you ever danced with the Kindle in the pale Moonlight?

I recently bought a Kindle Fire and want to use Silverlight on it (or some analogue, such as Moonlight). All my google searching indicates that there are a whole host of technical difficulties involved, and there is all sorts of unconfirmed speculation like "Well, maybe if you sideloaded Firefox and then installed Moonlight... that might work... possibly." I don't like messing around with new device software based on random people's hypotheses. Has anybody successfully managed some way to do this which you can personally confirm worked on your Kindle device?

No Glee in Mudville

Our new Kindle Fire is great, but it tells us we need to update our Flash Player when we want to watch Glee. If I try to DL the new file from the Adobe message, it seems to stall right after it starts. If I go to settings, it shows that Flash is " Always on". I haven't tried any other shows on FOX, but it seems to work fine for NBC stuff. Any Ideas?

Free Kindle Book book

When I had the first generation Kindle I had an e-book that was basically an index of free e-books that were in the public domain, and the title of each book was actually a hyper-link that would let you download a copy of said book right to the home screen of the Kindle. There can only be one ring to rule them all. Or not.

Kindle3 or Color Nook or Samsung Tab or just sticking with dead trees? I've been reading so many reviews, forums, tech support, askme posts, that my head is spinning and I don't know what to think. The new Kindle and Nook are supposedly vastly better than their predecessors, so I'm hoping mefites with new holiday toys might be able to shed some light. [more inside]

Problem syncing kindle for pc content to Kindle 3.

I got a kindle 3 for Christmas and since I'm trying to limit my spending, I'm trying to take advantage of the free books available on Amazon and sites like Manybooks.net that offers free books in the kindle (awz) format. I also downloaded kindle for pc onto my home laptop. So I downloaded 3 or 4 awz format books from manybook.net onto my kindle for pc no problem. I then connected my kindle 3 to my computer via usb and tried to sync them to no avail. The books that I've downloaded directly to the kindle 3 from Amazon show up as "archived items" on my kindle for pc interface (and did before the attempted sync), but I can not get the books that were loaded directly to the pc onto the kindle 3.
