Wanted: Bike Routes in New England that meet specific criteria.

Please suggest bike routes in New England that meet some specific criteria. We took our son on a section of the East Bay Bike Path near Providence for his first bike ride last week and he loved it. He sits in an iBert on Mom's bike. We are looking for similar routes. In looking for similar I articulate what specifically I think is good about this path for us in the extended explanation. We can ride weekdays in addition to weekends. Thanks. [more inside]

Nonfiction books for 9 year olds

Great non-fiction books for a smart 9 year old search: my kindle owning niece is embarking on summer vacation. I'd like to gift her some good books to fill up her summer days... she reads a huge amount, and I'd really like to encourage this. She's nine but has a roughly 9th grade reading level, so she's definitely capable of handling somewhat advanced books, and she's curious about a wide range of things. Really I'm looking for pretty much anything non-fiction & interesting. [more inside]

Where should he sleep?

I just found out that when your child reaches 35 inches, they're supposed to transition out of a crib -- and that's my son's height. I think he could probably climb/fall out of his crib at this point. But what if he's not ready for a toddler bed? [more inside]

Help Me Find This Fable About Cheetahs

Trying to identify a myth/fairy tale I read in an issue of Highlights back in the 1990s. It has to do with how animals got their spots/colors, and how the cheetah, who was vain, waited too long and had to use the leftover paint colors to create its yellow coat, black spots, and black "tears". Where can I find issues of 3-2-1 Contact magazine from the 1980's?

Is there a library or archive that might have issues of 3-2-1 Contact magazine from the 1980's? 3-2-1 Contact Magazine was a kids print magazine in the U.S. from the 1980's onward, related to the PBS show produced by the Children's Television Workshop. The best I've found from casual searches of Internet resources is a 138MB zip of scans, but this archive is too incomplete for my purposes. Is there a library or archive that would have something like this? Or were magazines not considered archive-worthy, and personal collections (eBay, magazine forums) are my only hope? [more inside]

Do kids do better with individual chores or group chores?

Parenting filter: I have two kids, 11 and 9. I'm a divorced dad trying to figure out a plan for their accountability for their chores when they're with me. The biggest stumbling block seems to be division of labor. On the one hand, assigning individual chores (Daughter, you wash the dishes. Son, you dry and put away) and rewarding for completion seems simple enough. But I want to teach them teamwork, negotiation, time management (who does what part first) and shared responsibility. So sometimes I say "Clean the kitchen, you figure out who does what". The latter seems better for a shared reward like a trip to the movies. Does anyone favor one approach over the other, and why? BTW they're coming from a household where their mom and I differed on how to handle chores, so they're a little used to coasting.

NYC/Brooklyn-specific gifts for twin 4yr old girls

What NYC or Brooklyn-specific gift can I get for twin girls age 4-5 who I 've never met but know they have everything, are probably reading beyond their age level, etc. My budget is around $20-30 total. I don't know anything about this age group or whether the parents are pro/against princess/barbie stuff and I'd like to avoid gender-stereotyping gifts anyway. Ideas? Thanks!
