Where are the best places in LA to live with a family?

You're considering a move to Los Angeles for a job in Irvine. You and your (stay-at-home) wife are both in your early 30s, and have two young (under two years old) children. You were raised in the midwest, and prefer the suburbs. You want to live in an area that has lots of other young families and easy access to eating and shopping and preschools and other things like that. You don't want to spend more than 30 minutes or so commuting. You want to spend about $3,000 per month on rent for a 3+ bedroom single-family-home (or condo, you suppose). What areas of Los Angeles do you focus on?

Ideas for easing the move overseas for kids.

Im wondering if there are any sites or books for kids to help prepare them for a move overseas. I've got two sons, a 9 year old and a 6 year old. The 9 yr. old is angry about our upcoming (in about a month) move to Sydney, Australia. Any ideas you have would be helpful. We live in the South (USA) now. Thanks for all the helpful responses to my earlier question.

moving to Sydney with kids

My husband has just been offered a job in Sydney, Australia. We have two sons, 6 and 9. We currently live in the US. While we are extremely excited about moving, we know nothing about Australia. Ive read the travel books, but am trying to find out about schools, housing, etc. we should be moving in late June. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance!

Should I move my family abroad? Where?

Round 2 - On Wednesday I posted a question asking about living outside the US. In the responses, I got scolded for not providing enough background for people to offer good advice. Here's the original question: "I've been thinking about exposing myself and the family to the salutory benefits of living overseas (we live in the US now). The key question, of course, is where? I've heard some people speak reverently of New Zealand, but have never been there myself. Your suggestions and reasoning behind them would be welcome...
