My five-year-old nephew likes building traps and contraptions. I know he uses tape and bungee cords, and presumably stuff from around the house. What could I give him for Christmas that would help support this hobby? Do you have kids that like to build? What're their favorite scraps and fancy things to create with? [more inside]
My two children (ages 6 and 9) and I would like to buy a Tarot deck so that we can learn to tell each others' fortunes. The children like standard kid/fantasy stuff (Cthulhu, LOtR, Star Wars, puppies, LEGO, Minecraft, Terraria, cartoons, etc) and my only requirement is that it doesn't have nudity as that would freak out their long-suffering mother. Bonus points if it's under $15 and available on Amazon.
Our daughter just finished her first year of Spanish in a full-immersion kindergarten. We're looking for good all-Spanish TV shows we can show her (and my wife, who wants to learn) over the summer so she doesn't forget it all. [more inside]
I graduated from college a while ago and have been trying to figure out what to do with my life ever since. While idly combing through job postings I found a few looking for a babysitter and thought "I could do that... maybe." I'm looking for advice on how to turn that tentative "maybe" into something more confident. [more inside]
My wonderful partner has a 7-year-old, 2nd-grade son who is having a little trouble keeping up with his peers in the reading department. We're trying to give him some extra attention in that area so that he can catch up, and we'd like to try and foster in him a genuine interest in reading. What books (or comics, or anything) could we give him that he might like, and which would be appropriate for his reading level? [more inside]

I'm looking for board books that do not just portray white children. Books appropriate for ages 1-4 would be fine, but I'm buying for a 2-year-old so a bit on the simpler side is better. Thank you!
Please recommend your favorite stores for books for kids in Chicago. I am interested in finding used books, quirky books, and progressive books. Not necessarily all three and not necessarily in that order. Toddler Xalf is almost 1.5 years old, but I'm happy to buy books that will be over his head for the next few of years. Any part of Chicago is fine. Suburbs too, especially those to the north.

Please suggest bike routes in New England that meet some specific criteria. We took our son on a section of the East Bay Bike Path near Providence for his first bike ride last week and he loved it. He sits in an iBert on Mom's bike. We are looking for similar routes. In looking for similar I articulate what specifically I think is good about this path for us in the extended explanation. We can ride weekdays in addition to weekends. Thanks. [more inside]

My partner and I are ontemplating separation and I am thinking of moving several towns over. I have read stories of parents separating and the benefits of the two homes being close as in a few blocks. But what should I know about making it work for myself and my kid when the homes are further apart? I would like to hear positive advice from parents and kids who have negotiated two homes with a little distance between them . Were their plusses to this distance to balance out the minuses? How did you make it work? [more inside]

Concrete ideas of things to do with a nine-year-old boy in the Baltimore, MD area. I am going to be the Big Sister of a boy in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, and as much as I love doing things this kid likes and things kids like in general, I'm having a heck of a time trying to come up with specific activities--for example, I can't exactly schedule an activity day for sword-fighting or reading. How much do you pay your nanny? I'm in the process of hiring a regular babysitter for my kids. I've found someone I like, a college student with tons of experience who's really great with my little ones. She'll just be here two mornings a week-- one morning with just my infant and the other morning with my toddler as well. How much should I offer her? What about tips? What else do I need to know? This is in Chicago, but I'm also curious if the going rate varies in different parts of the country/world.
