I want one thing that will carry my keys, ID, and phone. I haven't yet found one that meets my requirements. [more inside]
We got the keys to our new house! Specifically: We got around ten keys. Mostly not super-well labeled. The place we are moving into is currently divided into three separate apartment units. Last night we spent about an hour futzing with various keys. We were able to get into two of the three apartments. But we were unable to find a key that could open the door to the third one. I sometimes lock my keys in my car, my friends do sometimes, I like to be uber-prepared, i already carry around jumper cables, and a small repair kit, and I'd like to add a car door unlocker kit to my car. I see a slim jim is a common tool, and an inflatable bag thingy. Is this the best way? Will it damage the paint/car? What are my options? Thanks.
I lost my keys somewhere in a very narrow geographic area yesterday, and I have no clue what could have happened. Can the hivemind think of anyplace in my path I might not have looked, or have any idea what might have happened? Steps retraced below the fold. [more inside]
We have tickets to fly to Fort Lauderdale in late December and are planning on driving south and spending the week in the Florida Keys. Looking for lodging recommendations, preferably with kitchen facilities. [more inside]
A few weeks ago, my bike lock left me stranded after the stupid plastic key handle broke off, leaving the rest of the key trapped inside the lock (and leaving me trapped four miles from home, in the rain). Similarly, the weird plastic key handles add a lot of unnecessary heft to my keychain. Are there any decent bike locks that use "normal" keys? Bonus points if I can get multiple locks that use the same key.
So i've read the previous Asks like this and this but i'm in a bit of a bind moreso than those with regards to an obstinate landlord who wants to charge me a TON for a new key, snowflakes inside... [more inside]
I know there are 24 hour lock smiths that will open a door at any time of night if you're locked out. But is there a place that is actually open where I can walk in and copy some keys? I'm getting the keys in a week apparently and I don't have to return them until noon, but unfortunatly I have to be at work at 7am. This means I need to copy them before I get to work that day. Any possibility of doing this?
I want to change our apartment's doorknob and lock to a "night latch" (I believe is the term). I'm fairly confident I have the lock I'd like. What do I do now? [more inside]
I did it -- I bit the bullet and bought a townhouse! I'm so excited! The sale completes today, and by Wednesday by the latest I'll have the keys. Movers are scheduled for Saturday, and I'm already mostly packed. What should I do with the place between those two dates? It's a local move, only 20 min away, and I will have a least a day and a half to do stuff -- what should I be doing? [more inside]
After waiting at the bus stop for 30 minutes in the cold only to realize that I forgot my pass, I realized today that I need a way to carry my various keys (car, apartment, parent's house, work, PO box, garage) and cards (bus pass, student ID, work ID, gym card) with me in an organized way. I'm looking for a keyboard that a) lets me play along to lit-up keys and b) allows me to either add my own music for it to decipher or tell it which keys I want to light up when I play a song. [more inside]
A character in a recent movie records sounds with a mic into a single device made of a small keyboard with drum pads, then turns the sounds into music using this keys/pad instrument and some kind of mixing board, both lap sized. I can't seem to find any pictures online. Do these instruments exist? [more inside]
I bought a new 2012 Toyota Corolla LE. I received 2 Master keys (Smart keys with buttons) and a valet key (starts the car, but doesn't open the trunk). The dealership wants crazy $ to make more keys. They're equipped with an immobilizer, so only those keys can be used to start the car. I want a spare that will open the doors in case I lock myself out, either for a Hide-A-Key under the car or my wallet. Will a $3 duplicate from a hardware store accomplish this? If not, is there a cheap way to go about it?
I spilled beer on my laptop. I got a missing or corrupt BIOS error on startup and a number of keys didn't do anything when pressed. I disassembled the laptop and cleaned the inside with alcohol wipes and replaced the keyboard. The BIOS error is gone and the keys register as input but in pairs. Is there a software solution to this problem? [more inside]

I just bought a used Thinkpad T61 and the e,t, and space bar keys work intermittently. The keyboard is reasonably clean and nothing is obstructing the keycaps underneath. I have taken out the keyboard and reseated the keyboard connector. Is this just a bad keyboard or should i be worried about something else? (os is linux/ubuntu)

The left CTRL key popped off of my ThinkPad T43, the casualty of a RAM upgrade. The blue nipple seems to have come unglued from both the keyboard and the key. Is it safe to glue onto the keyboard? My cat got on my roommate's MacBook and now it's minimizing windows whenever she presses the "m" key. Then it's bringing up the preferences of whatever application she's in. It happened as she was trying to search Google in Firefox, and then just type "m" in Word! I checked the sticky keys, no dice. Tried restarting, still happening. It means she can't really do anything because there are lots of m's out there! Help!!!!
