What to do in Ol' Kentucky

What to do in Louisville, KY this weekend? I'm heading up to Louisville on Thursday and staying through the weekend. Is there anything awesome of note I should investigate? I know about the Downs, and there's the Garvin Gates Blues Festival going on as well. Are there any interesting nightclubs or evening spots worth looking into for the counterculturally-minded? Art exhibits going on? Awesome places to get awesome food I can't eat anywhere else? I'll have days to fill, give me the lowdown!

Road trip suggestions?

Road trip! My mom and I are driving from Eastern Long Island to Stillwater, OK, via (tentatively) Harrisburg PA, Charleston WV, Mammoth Cave State Park KY, St Louis MO, and Bartlesville OK. I'd like suggestions of things we might do along the way, as this breaks down to only about 5 hours of driving per day, so we have some touristy time! So at the moment we have a night at the Price Tower in Bartlesville, OK, set in stone -- but apart from that, our itinerary is mostly flexible. The current list of stops is based on searching through AskMe archives for road trip suggestions, and then dividing the distances without recommended stops into 5-hour chunks to fill our time before arriving in Bartlesville. To give you an idea of what we like, when I googled Harrisburg and Charleston I made notes of the following intriguing-sounding tourist attractions:

Harrisburg: National Civil War Museum, Sunken Gardens at Riverfront Park
Charleston: Beckley exhibition coal mine, Craik-Patton house, South Charleston Indian Mound, New River Gorge National River

As I said, apart from Price Tower, nothing, including our route, is set in stone -- we've never driven through these parts of the country before, so we're open to all suggestions.

Oh, and bonus (for me!) if you have vegan dining suggestions along that route...

My Old (canvas) Kentucky Home

We're taking a camping trip around Eastern Kentucky during the first week of August. What should we do along the way? Any must-see campsites, parks, restaurants, venues, giant bourbon vats, or other fun things to see and do?

Because of time restrictions, we're going to save Mammoth Cave and other parts of Western Kentucky for another trip.

Itinerary
Day 1: Chicago to Cincinnati

Day 2: Midday stop in Lexington, drive to Daniel Boone National Forest

Day 3-5: Camp, day trip (Cumberland Gap, Red River Gorge?)

Day 6: Visit Whitesburg/Hazard, drive and overnight in Louisville

Day 7: Louisville to Henderson, camp, Bluegrass in the Park festival

Day 8: Henderson to Chicago

In addition to interesting sites, we're not quite sure where the best place to camp around Daniel Boone might be. We're looking at Carr Creek or Kingdom Come State Park, looking for places that are beautiful, not touristy, and near water - any suggestions?

Thanks!

Is it possible to live in Louisville, KY on a salary in the mid-30's? Where? I'm thinking of accepting a job offer that would pay in the mid 30's, near the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. Where in the city, if anywhere, could a single fellow rent a place and live on that modest a salary? Proximity or easy transport to the UL area would be a plus. Bonus if near parks, bookstores, mass transit, music venues, etc.

Accomodations In Pikeville KY

Does anyone know about places to stay in Pikeville Kentucky??? I want to take my fiance to Hillbilly Days in Pikeville Kentucky for his b-day. I want to stay in a secluded cabin or cottage near Pikeville. I have only been able to find cabins in Lexington, which is like 2 hours away. Does anyone know of any neato places to stay that's between Lexington and Pikeville? I will take a cool hotel or B&B as a last resort, but I would prefer a nice remote cabin, where we can relax and have some real privacy. Any ideas?

Chord question: would you say that these chords are the correct ones for "Sister's Coming Home/Down at the Corner Beer Joint" from the Blue Kentucky Girl Album? Trying to play along and not sure if they're right. Bonus points if you happen to know the chords for the Willie Nelson version, which is much slower and easier to play along with! thanks.

Really awesome Kentucky Derby/Horse Races themed gift for my dad's 50th birthday?

Gift Filter: Really awesome Kentucky Derby/Horse Races themed gift for my dad's 50th birthday? My dad is big into the horse races, and to celebrate turning the big 5-0 next month, he's doing a Kentucky Derby trip, complete with tours of the stables, etc.

I want to get him a gift that will possibly come in handy during his trip, or at least will be related to the Kentucky Derby (though I don't want to get a trinket solely because it is related to the Derby.)

He's already got the trip agenda planned out (and crammed full of activity,) so tickets or anything that would throw off his schedule are kind of out.

Dad loves to read--the downside of that is he probably already has any Kentucky Derby related books you might recommend.

I'll admit, I'm pretty uninformed as far as horse races go, (closest I've gotten is watching Sea Biscuit) so I have no idea where to even start.

Any suggestions? My dad is a great guy and always gives really thoughtful gifts, and I want to show him that I really have put some thought into his special day.

Danger! Water contains high levels of hydrogen.

WTF is up with this sign? Background: I live in Louisville, Kentucky. Today I was downtown at the big park on the riverfront shooting reference for a project, and I saw this sign beside of a fountain. Now, since there are two atoms of Hydrogen in each molecule of water already, what's up with this? Is the city parks department pranking us? Is there a legitimate situation in which flowing water at an outside fountain would somehow be infused with extra hydrogen? Discuss.

Lesbian-friendly psychiatrist/therapist in Kentucky?

Can you recommend a good, lesbian-friendly therapist/psychologist/whatever in Kentucky? I'm only twenty-one years old, but depression has plagued me for as long as I can remember -- well, at least since middle school -- and I really need a therapist. Problem is, I'm a kind of butchy lesbian, and I haven't felt very comfortable with the handful of rural psychologists I've talked to so far. I'm looking for someone who will accept the gay factor and just take it in stride: I'm completely comfortable with who I am, and I feel like the only way that being gay contributes to my depression is having to deal with the awkward and uncomfortable reactions of everyone in the shitty small town I live in.

So, back to the point: can anyone recommend a kind, gay-friendly therapist or psychiatrist or anything, really, in Central Kentucky? I live close to the "metro"-Lexington area, but traveling to Lousivlle/Cincinnati/anywhere close is feasible.

Where should we go in Kentucky/Tennessee?

Within 5 days, where should we take a roadtrip in Kentucky/Tennessee/other close-ish areas? So. A very good friend of mine lives in Texas, and I live in Cincinnati, OH. We have not been able to see each other since she moved to Texas two and a half years ago. This year, for Christmas, my mom and her dad got in cahoots back in October and secretly arranged, for both of our Christmas presents, to plan a trip for us to go on together in June of 2008. Her parents are flying her in and out of Lexington, KY, and we'll have 5 days 4 nights in the time that she's here.

Now, they picked Nashville, TN as a tenative place for us to go, but also left this mostly unplanned so we can pick what we want to do. At least one day should be spent in Nashville, but 5 days is a lot to spend in Nashville, so we're interested in a mini-road trip around the Kentucky/Tennesee area or anywhere else within, say, a 4 hour radius or so.

Of interest: hiking, horseback riding, whitewater rafting (we REALLY REALLY want to do this. where's the best place? West Virginia? is that feasible?), general exploring, the mountains, pretty scenery, other adventures, maybe a museum or two, etc. Not necessarily of interest: sporting events/things, pricey restaurants or hotels. We've got some time to save some money, but we're also both college students, so cheaper is defientely better.

Where are your favorite places in this neck of the woods? If it were you, what would you go and see? We're both female and will both be 21 at that time (though, I should add, neither of us drink much).

Thanks in advance!

refugees in louisville?

hi, friends. hope everyone in the states had a great holiday! i am interested in learning about louisville, kentucky as a possible destination for a young, refugee couple from liberia that have been living in san diego for two years. i have some friends - recent immigrants from liberia in the past 2 years - who are currently living in san diego and looking to move. they are really interested in louisville, kentucky (a friend lives there), but before they quit their jobs (he's an airport security guard, she's a CNA) and pack up their kid (they have a one-year-old), they want to make sure there they will find affordable housing, good jobs that pay enough to improve their quality of life, and opportunities for further education and advancement (both have learned to read and write english in the past two years; the wife has ambitions of going to nursing school).

they've asked me to help them do a bit of research, but i'm struggling with how to search for answers for them. for my own part, i am a bit worried about the number of immigrants from west africa that may or may not be there (will they find a community?) and if they will be able to afford to live in a safe neighborhood or whether they will end up in another slum.

most info that i can find is based around opportunities for white color workers or entrepreneurs. what can a lower-income, immigrant couple expect when they reach louisville? where might one find realistic information about this?

What Unmarked Black Helicopter Pilots drive on their days off?

The unmarked black cars cars: why is their existence a secret? A couple weeks ago I was at a gas station in Flagstaff & noticed about six cars that were completely covered with some sort of black material. At first glance, the cars (sort of Scion-shaped, I guess) looked like they were painted black, but they were actually covered with a bunch of panels of black stuff that was criss-crossed with some sort of black tape. The black material stuck out over the edges of the doors to form "flaps" of about six inches. There were no other markings, period. Oh, except for the plates. They all had Kentucky dealer plates. The drivers were men of varied ages & ethnicities. Some of them carried 3-ring binders. I approached one of the drivers & asked him why all the cars were wrapped up like that, & he refused to say. Wikipedia tells me that there's a Toyota plant in Kentucky, so I'm thinking this was some sort of top-secret long-distance driving test of some sort of car of the (near) future.

Just curious if anyone knows what was going on here.

Getaways near Cincinnati?

Nice weekend places near or within 2 hrs' drive of Cincinnati OH, for small group getaway? Trying to find a place where a group of thirtysomething friends can go for a relaxing weekend. There will be 4 to 6 of us, maybe with a couple of babies. Could be a rent-a-cabin/cottage deal, maybe a b+b, maybe even a hotel in a town.

Idyllic quiet setting preferred, but all recommendations welcome - including in Cincy itself. (I don't know the town; we're arranging an easy, peaceful weekend getaway for someone who lives there and is stressed out.)

What was my grandmother's childhood like? My grandma, Hazel May, was fond of saying that she grew up "on a farm in the hills of Eastern Kentucky." She was born in 1903 and had six siblings; all her brothers went to World War I.

I'd like to know more about what it was like to grow up in the hills of Eastern Kentucky at that time. About all I know is that, for her, Eastern Kentucky meant "bumpkin;" she met my grandfather while he was in pharmacy school in Memphis, and they moved to Chicago, where they spent most of the rest of their married life.

Unfortunately Grandma Hazel passed on before I had the wit to ask her about her early life. What book, website or documentary could I check out to learn more?

NYC to Berea, Kentucky. Best ways to travel back and forth, about 6 roundtrips over the course of 3 months? Low cost is very important, but not quite so important that I could stomach the 19-hour Greyhound ride every time. Can't find any budget airlines that go NYC-Lexington. Some cheap flights BWI-LEX and some NYC-Dayton -- maybe those are my best choice even with the added time/cost on bus legs? Finally, anybody know approx. taxi cost Lex-Berea (for times when Greyhound schedule doesn't fit with my plane)? Thanks!

Fun things to do in Louisville, Kentucky? Seeking suggestions for especially cool museums, galleries, theatre, cinema, people-watching, eating, walking. Things I'm not interested in, unless they're truly exceptional in some way: Bars, nightclubs, shopping.

Bonus points for places within walking distance of downtown. (My tolerance for walking is much higher than most people, so a coupla-three mile radius is just fine.)

I consulted this thread but I'm interested in Louisville specifically.

Thanks in advance!

Can I buy alcohol in Kentucky on Easter?

What are the laws governing the sale of alcohol in Kentucky--specifically on Sundays/Easter? I'm writing a story in which the characters get drunk on an Easter Sunday, and the story's set in Lexington and the surrounding area. I'm not a Kentucky resident, and I want to make sure it's possible to buy alcohol on Sundays/on Easter in Kentucky. I know some counties in Kentucky are dry, as well--is Lexington?

This Wikipedia article seems to indicate that there are no laws restricting the sale of alcohol in Kentucky, but there isn't much information--just a "no" in a box. Other Google searches have only led to information about blood level limits and drunk driving laws.

Thanks!

effing eff eff jets effing up my quiet weekend

It's that time again in Louisville, KY, time for a quaint tradition involving jets and fireworks invading my neighborhood. Instead of suffering through it, I've made the decision to escape with my sweetheart and pooch in tow. Now, where to go? We'd like to find a spot within a 4 hour drive and accommodations that will welcome our small dog. We're also young, not fussy, and somewhat ill at the idea of staying at a smarmy country inn.

Any ideas?

What do I need to know when moving from Florida to Kentucky?

My wife and I are moving from Florida to Louisville, KY. What do I need to do or know to make the transition from warm to cold weather go as smoothly as possible? We expect to arrive around the 3rd of January, in the middle of winter, so we'll start with the worst of the weather, probably. I'm interested in web sites with tips and stuff, but even more interested in personal experience and informed wisdom from people who have been there, done that.
Also, I'm really excited about snow; but tell the truth: will I actually be miserable?

How do I locate my great uncle's school records? He was born in 1890 in Northern Kentucky, just outside of New Castle. I'm not even sure what schools were around back then, and I know that would be a good start.

Lexington, KY and I

One day left in Lexington, Kentucky, and I am looking for something to do. I have been here a few days and the business is over. I have one full day to go around, with a car, and a modest amount of money.
I have already been to Keeneland, Woodford Reserve, I have tried a Kentucky Brown (and just about went into cardiac arrest), a very good restaurant in Louisville, a sushi joint in Lexington, and a lot of backroads driving looking at the gajillion-dollar farmland.
I have not had any burgoo.
I intend to hit Chowhound later tonight to plan the day out a little, but I am looking for some more suggestions. I am up for anything, and the cold and rain here doesn't bother me.

Which Kentucky Bourbon distillery has the best tour?

Which Kentucky bourbon distillery has the best tour? My wife and I are considering a small overnight trip to Kentucky Bourbon country in August. We have looked into some of the tours offered by a few of the distilleries. The Bourbon Heritage Center and the Woodford Reserve tours both look impressive (at least online), but we would love to get some first-hand recommendations about which tours are worthwhile. Which distillery(s) are the best to visit? Bonus points if you have tips on other good places to visit or excellent restraints or B&Bs we should go to in the area. (Bardstown, Versailles, Frankfort, etc.)

Need Tips on Kentucky

Looking for tips and suggestion for my long weekend in Kentucky. A good friend is getting married in rural, eastern Kentucky (Eagle Cliff/Cliffview) and I'm looking for things to do/places to eat on the way there from/to Louisville. Any good spots off Highway 64 to stop for lunch? Anywhere you might recommend spending Sunday night on the way back to Louisville? Any Kentucky experience we should be sure not to miss?

Kentucky Derby Race Time

Kentucky Derby Race Time. OK, I'm about to lose my fucking mind...[MI] I am having guests over to watch the Ky Derby, and I'm trying to TiVo it, but nowhere on ESPN, askJeeves, Google, the Churchill Downs site, can I find an exact/approx. time the actual race is going to start. ESPN just shows "race coverage" and I don't want to go through three hours of coverage.

Thanks.
