GDM KDE GNOME KDM XDM XFCE ARGH!

GDM KDE GNOME KDM XDM XFCE ARGH! Logon manager? Window managers? KDM that can load GNOME? I am so confused on this topic of the differences and how they all fit together. Can someone point out some good things to read on the topics? Something that ties it all together?

Any Linux that "Just Works" for a Dell Inspiron E1405?

Is there a KDE based Linux Distro out there that will "Just Work" with my Intel 945 graphics card on my Dell Inspiron E1405? Or is there an EASY way to get, say, Kubuntu working with it? I can figure out everything else if I can JUST GET GRAPHICAL. [more inside]

How do I setup monitor "gridlines" on Linux?

How do I setup monitor "gridlines" on Linux? Nvidia has software for Windows that let's you divide your monitor into virtual sub-monitors or set gridlines so that if you maximize a window in that certain section, it only maximizes to that particular area. This is particularly useful on big monitors. Does anyone know of any utilities on Linux that do this or how to configure KDE or Gnome (or I suppose another window manager) to do this? [more inside]

How do I make GTK apps look good in KDE?

How do I make GTK apps look good in KDE? Although I use KDE exculsively, I still use some GTK apps, like Firefox. (Oh for a Qt build of Firefox!) I hate the default look of GTK. I can use the GNOME theme editor to change the GNOME theme to something acceptable. The trouble is, 1) This seems to make the fonts in all my GTK apps too big, and 2) I lose the changes as soon as I log out. (And no, I'm not about to start using GNOME.)
