Day trip near Marco Island

I'll be staying on Marco Island in Southwest Florida in a couple weeks. Although lounging around on the beach doing nothing is definitely a priority, I would like to find one outdoorsy day trip. Looking for something I can complete, including transportation to and from, in 10 hours or less. Could be kayaking, hiking or biking (I am not an experienced mountain biker or kayaker, but would be into trying anything basic, especially if rental equipment is easily obtained). [more inside]

Shopping for my first kayak

What sort of kayak would best serve a relative beginner who intends to paddle on both fresh and salt water? I have up to about $1500 to spend on equipment. I'm mostly planning to use it on an intracoastal waterway, the Gulf of Mexico and an occasional lake or river. I'll likely be alone most of the time.

Young man river keeps dreaming along

I'm interested in doing a long trip in a small boat through the north american river system. How would I go about learning what laws and regulations apply and what rivers are navigable? I'm not sure where to even start my research. What I have in mind is something like a long cross-country bicycle trip, except on the water in a small boat such as a canoe or similar, doing the journey 18th century style.

Will a Kayak Fit on our Fit?

My wife and I are eager to buy a couple of kayaks soon, but our only vehicles are of the Honda Fit variety (she has a 2008 Sport , I have the 2007). We only need to transport the kayaks about 5 miles to our nearest lake, but I was wondering if anyone knew of the difficulty in finding a rack (or racks) to transport the kayaks on our little Hondas. Good Kayak for Both Lake and Ocean Near Hawaii, with Storage?

Kayak recommendations... I have never been in a kayak, but have had a lot of experience in canoes. I want something that would be decent for a lake, but I plan on moving to Hawaii in about 2 years, so I would want it to be good for the sea too. Also storage would be nice to have too, so I can carry some equipment for some over-nighters. What about Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120 or 140?
