Juvenile probation/parol officers...what can you tell me about your profession?

Juvenile probation/parol officers...what can you tell me about your profession? Any juvenile (or adult) probation/parole officers out there? Why did you get into your line of work and how to you generally feel about the offenders that you work with? What are your day to day tasks? I'd love to know anything about the profession. I'm especially interested in the juvenile justice system. Anything helps!

What would you give someone in a juvenile correctional facility?

What would you give someone in a juvenile correctional facility? My aunt has just emailed the family to send letters and care packages to her 16 year old son (my youngest cousin) who is in a juvenile detention center. He has been sentenced for a minimum of 1 year, but that may have just been extended. I don't know him very well, the family lives in Colorado, but he seemed like an angry, troubled kid. His parents are going through a bitter divorce, they both are arguing over who gets the kids. Either parent wants them because of their shenanagans. Sad I know. So he is obviously acting out as much as possible to get their attention. Robbery did the trick.

To let you in on his personality, he was dissapointed that he was put in with the soft kids and not the rough, higher risk kids. This email that just got sent out by the aunt just mentioned that he got moved to the higher security facility. I guess he hasn't been doing to well in there.

So, the aunt has tasked us, the family, to reach out to him, send him a letter, a care package. What would you send a kid that might make a difference, might make him think, or just pass the time?

balls balls balls balls balls

I'm throwing a Balls Ball. You know, just a buncha dudes, enjoying balls, watching 300 and drinking together. That kind of thing. We have a reasonable menu already, but still, I would like you to suggest your favorite balls. Give me your balls. Right now, the menu is:

Hors D'Oeuvres:
Melon balls
Cheese balls

Main course:
Swedish Meatballs
Souzoukakia (Greek meatballs in tomato sauce)
Other possibilities?: Malai or Palak Kofta, Pan de Yucca

Dessert:
Bourbon Balls
Peanut Butter Balls

Drinks:
Highballs

So that ain't bad, but I'm sure that there are key balls I'm neglecting. What other balls could I serve, metafilter? Suggestions are nice, but recipes are nicer! Thanks in advance for your balls.

Where do the Wild Ones go?

Where do uncontrollable children ultimately end up in the US? What happens to children who simply cannot be controlled by 'the system'?

I'm talking the kind of kids who, if they were adults, would be regarded as dangerous sociopaths and locked up in high security federal prisons. I don't mean kids who suffer from diagnosed mental illnesses or disabilities, I mean kids who are violent, disruptive and simply don't respond to traditional forms of discipline/bribery/whatever. Assume that they continually try to escape from any kind of detention, and on the streets would come into contact with the police fairly quickly.

Obviously they are going to end up in Juvenile Detention at some point, but what happens if they can't be controlled there. Is there some ultimate 'big house' or lockdown facility? Is there something at the Federal level?

Think someone like Victor, the Wild Boy of Aveyron crossed with Randle McMurphy crosses with Cool Hand Luke. Say 12 years old. Where would they end up?

(yes, it's for a story)

Please suggest great books for girls.

Books for nine year old girl? I've been shopping for books for a bright, verbal almost-ten year old girl and have been dismayed at how many of the new titles are just age-reduced "chick lit" about dating. Can anyone recommend books that include a female protagonist that are a little bit more...what?...empowering? (This thread was very interesting but concerns only poetry.)

Know anything about juvenile boot camps?

Need juvenile boot camp recomendations for a troubled 14 year old, particularly around Virginia but anywhere will do. My mom's friend is having trouble with her kid (drinking, drugs, he's violent to this parents). They've tried everything and are now looking into sending him to a private "at risk" juvenile boot camp. I've been ordered to get recommendations and Google isn't getting me anywhere. He's 13 or 14, male. They're around Virginia but they're willing to send him anywhere in the country. They don't want the state involved so cheaper is preferred, some of the quotes they've gotten are around $40k for a year, which is a lot. I'll put my e-mail in my profile if people are more comfortable responding that way.

I told my mom this is extremely unwise: not only are recidivism rates ridiculously high but we've all read stories about kids getting abused and killed in those places. My mom wants to to help them anyway.

What's the name of this book?

I'm trying to identify a juvenile fiction book that I enjoyed as a, well, juvenile. The protagonist is a boy whose mother has recently remarried, to a creepy but rich scientist (?). The stepfather has invented or has possession of a device that can make written word disappear from the page, anywhere at any time. The boy and his mother flee for some reason, and the creepy stepfather and his goons pursue them, foiling their escape efforts with the word-dissappearer.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? I asked Google, but he doesn't know.
