Reporter's notebook

Journalists' notes: how do they take them, store them and reference them later? I am looking for resources and tips on how journalists take and manage notes, especially how they store them for later reference.

I've read this question but specifically I'm looking for info on the actual taking of notes and then organizing/filing them away once the story is finished.

Any inkling about the TypePad Journalist Bailout Program?

Has anyone heard back from Six Apart about their TypePad Journalist Bailout Program? I followed the guidelines and emailed them on Thanksgiving but didn't hear back. So I followed up last week and haven't heard back.

I imagine they've been inundated. I know it's the holidays. I know I'm throwing myself at their mercy. So I'm not indignant or demanding in the least, but I would like to know what's up if possible.

Status of journalist privilege laws in the US?

Whatever happened to the proposed journalist shield bills (S. 1419 and H.R. 3323) that were introduced into the (American) Senate and HoR in 2005? I'm doing some research on journalistic shield privilege in Canada and thought it would be a good idea to get some American background for context. I've already gone through Branzburg v. Hayes and its associated discussion on the First Amendment.

I understand that many individual states (most?) have shield legislation in place, but there is currently no federal legislation in the US. The bills referred to in my question would have, I believe, introduced a federal-level journalist shield privilege.

I don't have a lot of experience researching American legislation, so I am wondering if someone out there could either fill me in on what the latest developments are (judiciary hearings perhaps?), or give me some tips on how to find out. I'm guessing some things might have changed since the Plame and Cooper affair.

Thanks!

The Nameless Anarchist

Help me remember the name of an anarchist. I'm pretty sure he emigrated from Italy to the United States in the 1930s or 1940s. Though it might have been the 1920s, and no, it's not Sacco or Vanzetti. He was known as a prolific or at least an influential writer--possibly a journalist? The only concrete thing about him that I can dredge up is that there's a photo online somewhere that is allegedly the only extant picture of him.

P...R...X!

MediaFilter: What is your experience with PRX (Public Radio Exchange)? I am thinking of putting some content on PRX, a free-ish public radio program distributor.

Does anyone have any experience using this, and if you are putting work on it, what has been your experience with circulation and distribution?

How do freelance photographers and journalists identify themselves?

What do freelance photographers or journalists use to identify themselves as such? How do freelancers prove they are what they are when questioned by law enforcement or just citizens. Is there some sort of credential one should obtain?

Music Journalism Cliches

Music journalism clichés. I'm trying to compile a list of clichéd rock journalism similes, along the lines of 'sounds like a cat being strangled', or 'sounds like a drum-kit being thrown down a stairwell'. Trawling through 40 years of archives will prove to be somewhat time-consuming. Can anyone help me out with any? Points scored for the ridiculous/absurd, points deducted for ones you've made up yourself. Thanks!
