Say I wanted to become a medical illustrator...

Say I wanted to attend graduate school for a degree in Medical Illustration... what should I start doing now, as a freshman in undergrad, to insure that happens? I'm interested in the Johns Hopkins program, which only accepts 4-6 students a year.

I know I have four years to think about this, but I firmly believe that I need to plan early for graduate school, regardless of what path I take.

I've read over the admission requirements, but I want to know what really makes an applicant stand out. Does volunteer work matter? How about research? Internships at a graphic design company? Do they care if your graphic design classes were over the summer at the local community college?

I won't be taking drawing classes until next semester, and I'll be starting graphic design next year or over the summer. Will I be putting myself at a disadvantage to those who took them all 4 years? It isn't too late to switch classes, but I'm wary of dropping the pre-med requirements because if I change my mind I'm automatically a year behind.

Note: I'll take any advice, it doesn't have to be geared toward JH's program.

Compression Shirts: What are they for?

What is (/the original purpose of) a compression shirt? A local store has long-sleeved compression shirts on sale cheap and I've been looking for a cozy-n-toasty shirt for wearing like an undershirt in the winter that isn't longjohn/thermo material.

St. Johns Wort makes me sleepy at weird times, suggestions?

St. Johns Wort makes me sleepy at weird times, suggestions? I started taking St. Johns Wort as an antidepressant a few days ago. Most of the information that I read said that you should wait for up to 6 weeks for the drug to start taking affect. I, however, felt a real difference almost immediately. So, things are looking up.

There is one problem though; the St. Johns Wort has been making me sleepy at weird times. I have tried switching up when I take the pills. I take 3 pills in daily and it doesn’t seem like it matters at what times. I have tried taking the first one early in the morning; I have waited until 3:00 or 4:00pm to take my first one; I have even tried taking the whole day’s dosage at night before I go to bed.

I think sleepiness is related to stress. Every time I get upset, I feel a strong urge to go to sleep. I tend to disassociate this way normally, but it has been a lot worse since starting the medication.

I am wondering if anyone knows of a herbal remedy that counteracts the drowsiness caused by St. Johns Wort. I am also wondering if anyone has any general personal experience with St. Johns Wort that might be helpful to me.

Herbal remedy for depression?

I need advice from people who have experience taking herbal remedies / vitamins, specifically for depression. I was diagnosed with clinical depression and panic disorder about two years ago and was prescribed the highest dosage of Paxil. It definitely helped with my panic disorder, but never really seemed to change my depression. Actually, about a year into taking it, I became suicidal. After researching a little, I found Paxil is linked to increased suicidal tendencies so I immediately went off the drug cold turkey. Of course this was very dumb and I went through massive withdrawls but I didn't realize how dependent my body had become on it.

Which leads me to my question. It's been 3 months since I went off Paxil and I still have issues with depression. I'm not too keen on going on another prescription, but am curious about hermal remedies and/or vitamins I can take that might help. I have heard of St Johns Wort but does it actually work? Are there vitamins I should be taking? Certain foods I should be eating? Hearing from people with personal experience would be great.
