I've been listening to Johnny Cash's American V and it is breaking my heart. I'm in a wallowing mood and looking for other such raw emotional songs that are relatively simple (not a lot of instruments). Any genre. Please suggest anything even if you think it is obvious as I do not listen to much music (I own three albums: Tom Waits, Henry Rollins and a CBC radio play of Jacob Two Two and the Hooded Fang if that helps any.). I also enjoy his version of Hurt and would love more like that type. I really can't be more specific as I know nothing about music. Crying in your beer type but not necessarily about broken love. More about broken lives.

Looking for info on Cash tour

Please help me find info on Johnny Cash tour dates from the 1970s. My first live concert experience was seeing Johnny Cash in Boston in the 1970s. I was under 10 or 11 years old at the time and although I remember sights and sounds and loving the show, I am fuzzy on the details. I would like to find out 1) what the date might have been and 2) any details about that tour. My dad's only records were Johnny Cash (mom's were ther Ray Conniff Singers) and it was the only musical event I recall seeing as a child.

I've looked around for old tour itineraries online and in the backs of a couple bios at the bookstore with no luck. It would be very meaningful to me to try and track down a tour program or any recordings/TV appearances Cash did during the tour.

Things I kind of remember:

June Carter was there, and I think the billing was close to "Johnny Cash with June Carter Cash and the Carter Family".

Re: the venue, I have a feeling it was at Symphony Hall or somewhere near that area down by Berklee, but that seems weird. There was table seating though and it was very velvety. I do not think the stage was elevated very high.

It would have been between 1973 and 78.

If anybody knows of a source online or off regarding Cash mid 70s tours that have dates/cities/venues it sure would be appreciated. I've Googled it to death with no luck.

Purchasing fine art photographs

At some point in my life I would like to graduate from displaying posters on my wall to having fine art prints from the photographers themselves. I am thinking I would like a candid photograph of Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer (not in the same picture!). I assume there is a gallery to represent these photographers, but how do I start the process of finding them?

Johnny Cash Folsom prison inspiration?

I remember hearing once that someone in the audience at Johhny Cash's Folsom Prison performance - as a prisoner - was inspired by it to go on to a successful career as a singer/songwriter. Is this apocryphal? If not, who was it? Someone mentioned to me Waylon Jennings, but I don't think it's him. Google is inconclusive.

Who else rocked Folsom?

Just saw Walk the Line, which opens with Johnny Cash's performance at Folsom Prison, and I was wondering: what other bands (of any genre) have also played prisons and for what reason? I guess mental institutions count, but only if they're for the criminally insane ;-)

Nina Gordon has just recorded a cover of Straight Outta Compton. It rules. Johnny Cash did One, Jeff Buckley did Hallelujah, The Gourds did Gin and Juice. Any other Better-Than-The-First-Time covers? More Nina Gordon covers on her site.

And I know covers is a rejected term in some circles, but I can't think of a better one that doesn't sound wank.

Johnny Cash question: I've got the new Unearthed compilation, and want more listening recommendations based on my favourites. Anyone? [inside] So far, I'm totally single-repeat-mode hooked on:
Thirteen
Mercy Seat
One
When The Man Comes Around
hurt

and am looking for more of that gravelly-yet-subtle tone that those songs have, along with their catchy guitarness. I'm a bit put off by what -- right now, at least -- seems dullness in the hymn-based tracks. And I have heard no other J.Cash, so am lost.
