Why am I having leg, ankle and foot pains when I walk and jog?

I recently started a mix of walking and jogging for an hour a day, to help me lose weight. I'm about a hundred pounds overweight and until now have been pretty sedentary. Since I started walking and jogging, I've had aching, tight pains in my shins, ankles and heels. What could be causing this? Is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening? [more inside]

Motorik/Krautrock playlist for running

I'm putting together a Spotify playlist for running (working my way up to 5K), which so far includes Hallogallo by Neu! and Jenny Ondioline by Stereolab, and some songs by Fujiya and Miyagi. What I like about them is the driving, repetitive, steady motorik beat (or a beat that, if not technically motorik, gives the same feeling). I'd love to get more recommendations for other songs that would go on such a playlist.

Dreamy alt-pop running albums?

I am completely obsessed with the album Sweet Disarray by Dan Croll. It is an amazing outside-running album; rich, multilayered sound that is dreamy but not boring, upbeat enough to keep me going, but contemplative. (The link has clips from multiple tracks.) What similar albums do you recommend? [more inside]

awful running weather trifecta

Hotel near Trinity River jogging trails in Fort Worth?

We'll be staying in Fort Worth this weekend. I've read that there are some nice crushed gravel trails along the Trinity River. From my review of the trail map, it looks like the crushed gravel portion begins west of downtown, just a little north of Trinity Park. So, we'd like to choose the most convenient decent hotel to that portion of the trail. Fort Worthers, are there any decent hotels just a hop, skip, and a jump away? [more inside]

Imagine Bill Bryson wrote an intro to running book...

What's a good introduction to running book? I'd prefer a quick read, not too technical, humorous but not insulting. Something that starts with the basics (shoes, feet, clothing) and goes on to talk about things like all weather running and maybe even the basics of marathon training. [more inside]

Help me get better at jogging

I have always enjoyed (casually) running, and I've started running with more regularity, but I feel like I could be doing it better. Some times I get a good cadence going, and other times I feel like I'm running through jelly, even though I'm running in the same areas. Oh, and my running partner is my dog, who I'm training to ignore various exciting things while we run. More inside. [more inside]

Older, plumper, faster, stronger: asthma, jogging & Pavlov

I'm a life-long asthmatic, I take a steroid inhaler (preventer) daily and use a reliever inhaler regularly. I'm trying for the second time to complete C25k. I had to stop the first attempt due to life getting in the way. Second time round, I swear just the anticipation of sessions I did before is enough to make my chest tight. I'm struggling so much lately I've abandoned the programme and just go for a jog for as long as I can, which is 20 -30 minutes. That's ok, and I'm sure as far as exercise goes is better than nothing, but I honestly never even get to have tired legs before I have to stop; because I stop when I run out of breath. So I'm not totally unfit in grandma terms. I walk everywhere, dance, stretch well, am flexible, can easily get off the floor without using my hands. I'm not bothered about my (2st over)weight. But I'd like to able to get to the point where jogging makes me tired, and I think this automatic chest-tightening - and associated panic - is a reflex from a lifetime of asthma being an issue. Dealing with muscle soreness when returning to jogging

I have just ramped up my exercise a little, adding some intermittent jogging to my long walks (I'm every other day, or every third day). It has been several years since I did any sort of running more than an occasional dash to catch the bus, and my quadriceps are sore. Searching online, I have found advice that ranges from "do not do any more exercise until your muscles are no longer sore" to "power through no matter what!" MeFi, what should I do to mitigate muscle soreness and keep myself in good shape so I can keep exercising?

2.5 km to 10km in a month?

Hello. I am signed up to run the Manchester 10 k on 26 May. I have never run any kind of race in my life before, and am REALLY „not sporty“ though I am used to hiking/cycling. I have not, to put it mildly, trained as much as I should. By now I can jog for 2.5 – 3 km in half an hour, and have mostly „trained“ on the treadmill rather than outdoors (I strained a muscle running outdoors and feel like it’s my muscles and joints that are most struggling with the running rather than anything „cardio“ related as such. So my actual question: is it still possible to get myself into a condition where I can get round the route without walking it and without injuring myself (too badly) in the remaining time? How to determine pulse rate while running

OK, maybe the verb 'determine' is ambitious but having a close enough estimate is also good. There is a catch, I am not running on a treadmill and I do not have any gadget on my wrist or body. Is it still possible to have a nice guess of the pulse rate because, say, I want to be in the cardio zone and not in the fat burning zone. I think it is a function of age, fitness, speed and running duration but could not find an online chart for this kind of relation. And yes, I know the speed I run at.
