Should I stay, or should I go?

I just discovered I'm pregnant and due in April. While thrilled, the timing wasn't well planned... I've been looking for a new job opportunity and am starting interviews. Here's where I would love your advice: continue my search for a new position or tread water at my current job for another 1 to 1.5 years? [more inside]

Use headhunter as well as the boss-approved method to get an interview?

I was contacted about a job with a company by a HR recruiter (not from that company) on LinkedIn. I was aware of this job from the company’s website and also I have a friend who is working at that company in a peer position. That friend said he spoke to his boss, and his boss said I should apply for the job via the company's website, so I did. Would there be any benefit following up with the HR recruiter from LinkedIn anyway? [more inside]

Help me apply to Google! (post-postdoc version)

How should I acknowledge my job references for helping me land the gig?

I recently started a job that I'm really excited about. Part of the reason I was hired is because I got great endorsements from my references. I'd like to send flowers to the Manhattan offices of each one, but if you have a better idea for a considerate thank you gift for three smart, accomplished women in their late 20s/early 30s, I am all ears! I want to send something nice that makes it clear how grateful I am for their confidence in me. [more inside]

Time to get a new job.

I'm trying to find a new job so I can start actually saving some money and move into my own place. I'm a college grad with a linguistics degree living in northern NJ. For the past three years, I've been living with family, paying a small amount of rent each month, living a paycheck-to-paycheck existence and working a job I don't particularly enjoy. I'm done with this, but I don't know where to begin. I know there are a lot of posts such as this one on here, but I'd like to try to find answers particular to my situation. [more inside]

Is there such a thing as hunting TOO HARD for a job?

I was unfortunately laid off early this week, but have a couple months' severance and thus have a couple months' time in which to do a job search (it's okay, I was already thinking of starting my own search in a couple months anyway). HR interview followup

When a company invites you in to interview for a professional position, you spend half a day speaking with multiple people, and then they choose to not contact you in any way regarding the outcome of their search - - is that 100% douchebaggery, or are there legitimate HR/legal reasons they might behave this way? To be clear, I'm just talking about sending a quick email saying, thanks for coming in, we've made a decision, best of luck in future.

Help me navigate the modern job search

I'm actively looking for a job for the first time in awhile, and whenever I sit down to write a cover letter and update my resume it's like my job application skills stopped developing in 1985 (nevermind that I wasn't old enough to apply for jobs then). I know that customs and expectations for resumes and cover letters have changed, not least because so much is done via email rather than hard copy, but I don't know how to adapt the stale job-seeking skills I learned from people who learned them 25 years ago to the modern job search. About five weeks ago, I applied for what seemed to be a great job at the university from which I recently graduated. (It's not a teaching/faculty position.) I applied about a week before the deadline and I think I'm a good candidate for it. The website, which is updated daily during the week, says that it has yet to be filled, that the selection is still in progress.
