Should I take on a full-time job on top of my current part-time job?

Just started a great part-time job, and may have the chance at a great full-time job on top of it. Would taking the additional job be a good opportunity, or a setup for overwork and failure? I need help deciding if I can/should do both, given the chance. [more inside]

How do I explain my most recent job dismissal on job application?

I live in the US. I am applying for a city job and the application asks if I've ever been involuntarily dismissed; if I answer yes, I am required to explain. Unfortunately, I have to answer yes (there is no way around it), and I don't know how much to reveal or how to word this explanation. [more inside]

Forgot to mention something important at job interview -- what now?

I just had a job interview for a job I really want that went really well. So well that I forgot to mention something kind of important: I started a part-time retail job between applying and hearing back about the interview (it was almost a month and I've been unemployed since May, so needed something to pay the bills) that I'd have to give notice at, but I'd hopefully be able to get shifts covered. I haven't had any direct e-mail contact with the person who interviewed me, only with the administrative assistant. They would want me to start ASAP. I'll probably be going in for a second interview sometime next week. How and when do I mention this? More important, how and when do I mention this in a way that isn't going to ruin my chances of getting this job?

What do you (temporarily) do with an MA in History?

I'm currently enrolled in a History Ph.D. program and will be eligible to leave with an MA in a couple of months. I've applied to finish my doctorate elsewhere, but, given some recent developments in my department, have decided that I would really rather leave after my MA regardless of whether I get in elsewhere this cycle. Please tell me about your experiences as an independent tutor!

I just very recently lost my full-time job, and while I bust my ass looking for a new permanent position, I'll need to find something to keep paying my rent. I have experience tutoring, but only through a large well-known test-prep company. I'd appreciate any advice from Mefites out there who have done private tutoring outside of such companies in the New York City area, especially regarding how you got started. [more inside]

Should I send this letter to a search chair at a SLAC?

I am considering rescinding my application for employment at a SLAC - I am fairly certain they have invited candidates to interview since my initial follow-ups, but have been wholly unresponsive to my questions. The goal of this letter is to change their behavior so that they are not rude during future job searches. I think I would have liked this job, but do not want employment there if the search process is indicative of department dynamics. Letter enclosed. If you think I ought to send it, any suggestions for revision are welcome. [more inside]

Job searching on maternity leave: when to disclose?

I had a baby ten days ago. Whee! It's awesome. I have fourteen weeks off from work and planned to use this time not only to bond with baby but also apply for new jobs since my current job, though wonderful in the benefits department, is diverging in its business from what I was originally hired to do. At the very least I'd figured that it wouldn't hurt to look and now there's one company calling me back already. For this case and hopefully others to come, when in the recruitment process, and to whom, do I tell that I just had a baby and am on leave? [more inside]

Tips for assisting w/ a job search for someone who can't do it alone

I've offered to help a relative with a job search because it isn't going well on her own. She is qualified (with a 2 year degree) for the job she wants to find (and is not interested in entry level retail or the sort) but doesn't have the experience or skills to go about finding it. She also may have a diagnosis of Asperger's, and whether or not that's certain, I can at least say that she is stymied by technology (forgets how to do things, forgets logins, avoids it where possible), isn't likely to search out new career listings online much less apply, and gets weary and forgetful of the search easily. I would like some help from AskMe trying to make this is as easy as possible for her while hopefully still teaching her a few tricks. [more inside]

Applying for a new job- but what to do about a planned vacation?

Use headhunter as well as the boss-approved method to get an interview?

I was contacted about a job with a company by a HR recruiter (not from that company) on LinkedIn. I was aware of this job from the company’s website and also I have a friend who is working at that company in a peer position. That friend said he spoke to his boss, and his boss said I should apply for the job via the company's website, so I did. Would there be any benefit following up with the HR recruiter from LinkedIn anyway? [more inside]

Do I apply for (nearly) the same job again?

About five weeks ago, I applied for what seemed to be a great job at the university from which I recently graduated. (It's not a teaching/faculty position.) I applied about a week before the deadline and I think I'm a good candidate for it. The website, which is updated daily during the week, says that it has yet to be filled, that the selection is still in progress. However, I just saw a new job posting go up with the same title with a few small differences. I haven't been notified one way or the other as to the first job. Can my job search please be over already?

I will graduate from college in a week. Two weeks ago, I got an email from an institution that I had done a job interview with saying, "We would like to move forward in the process" and asking to do a background check on me. I filled out the paperwork and faxed it back immediately. They still haven't gotten back to me. (I know my background is clean, as I've passed two other background checks recently.) How good should I feel about my prospects here? Was I wrong in assuming that the background check was a prelude to an employment offer?
