Are cover letters dead?

I've applied to two jobs this week (the only two) for very different companies, and in both cases, when I applied on the company website, all that was requested of me was my contact information and a copy of my resume--no cover letter. [more inside]

Job Search Woes: Online Application Edition

I am just a couple weeks from receiving my bachelor's degree, and thanks to my college career counselor I feel like I now know what I'm doing when it comes to resumes, cover letters, and the interview process. I'm applying for an administrative/HR position, and the company's online application has be concerned that I don't look like as good a candidate. Should I mail the resume/cover letter in, or deliver it personally, and ignore the online app? [more inside]

Encountering slightly odd resume requirement, please help!

I'm currently applying for a job that specifically requires applicants to include salary history and requirements within their resume. While I'm more-or-less fine with disclosing this information, I haven't seen any company make this specification before, and I don't see a lot of consistent advice on how to best go about including this info. Does anyone here have experience with something like this, and can you recommend best practices and recommended formatting?

Resume/Job Search Question #1001

In May, I will be graduating with a master's degree in applied anthropology. I'll be meeting a potential employer this week (possibly tomorrow) at a 3-day long design/innovation bootcamp. How and when do I broach the subject of employment and ask to send him my resume? Bonus job search questions abound! [more inside]

How do you keep track of variations of your resume?

Here's a question that seems like it should be pretty basic, and yet I'm struggling! I'm applying to summer internships in many different fields (journalism, consulting, PR, etc) and am trying diligently to tailor my resume and cover letters to each individual place. But for resumes, it's frustrating to try to keep track of what belongs in each specific version. Do you have any strategies for keeping things organized? I'm thinking of making a template with allll of my experience and verbose descriptions, then trimming it down as needed every time. Any feedback on this idea, or other strategies?

Are all resume formats created equal?

I've been unemployed since the end of September. Recently, I've had two separate people (one (a recruiter) whose opinion I respect, and one (a woman at unemployment) whose opinion I find suspect) tell me that they would never consider anyone who submits a functional style resume (which is what I use). Do you hire people or work in HR? What do you think? [more inside]

Switching jobs, resume question

My girlfriend has an interview for a job later this week. She is currently employed, but this new job offers much more than what she is currently receiving. She really wants to use her current job on her resume since it is directly related to the field and good experience, but the possibility of losing her current job if the prospective employer contacts them is a risk she does not want to take.

Anyone have some recommendations on how this situation should be handled? [more inside]
