Museum jobs in Los Angeles: tips, suggestions, advice?

Pretty basic: my partner and I are relocating from the East Coast to Los Angeles in July; I am hoping to find a job (or jobs) in one of LA's many fascinating cultural institutions. Primarily looking for positions in research, outreach, or education. I am looking for any suggestions as to listserves, forums, job posting boards, or other places where I can start looking for posted positions, as well as any local groups like the EMPs that I might be able to join once there. How to job-hunt after spending your entire adult life at one company?

My spouse has decided to look for a new job after working at the same (large, national) retail chain since high school. Really in need of employment and career help

Hello. I am really in need of help and have never been set on any stable career or employment course. What can I do with very few resources (I am down to my last $100 bucks or so; I do not own a cell phone) to get a job ASAP or at least learn more about careers? Are there any lifehacks, tricks, ideas or pathways that I am missing? I know there have to be some people here who have recently had to find new jobs and know the modern job hunt a lot better than the standard advice that's outdated. What did you do when you felt between a rock and a hard place? One thing I was interested in is teaching (either substitute or full-time) but I have no clue how to become certified or where to start. My parents are really losing their patience and I have no clue how long I can be here without contributing pay from a job. [more inside]

Professional jobs that require night or shift work?

My parents have always worked night shifts as a nurse at a geriatric support centre, and as a mail sorter for the post office. They make enough money. They've made their schedules work for them, and also raised 4 kids while doing so. Because of their shift work, they do get a lot of time off-- maybe working double shifts sometimes, or three 12-hour shifts in a row, but then they get 3 days off. They also tend to know their schedules a month ahead of time. I do not work well in a 9-5 M-F schedule, so I'd like to know what are other similar jobs to this. [more inside]

How do I quit my job when I'm effectively irreplacable?

I'm an executive and engineer at a small creative company. For a variety of reasons, I must find new employment. Given our region, the company will not be able to replace me, and several other people will lose their jobs when it folds. That dilemma has already kept me here far longer than is healthy. Nonetheless, I want to do this as gracefully and ethically as possible so that they have the greatest chance to find new employment. How?

Job pairing: A Physician and a ?

I am about to enter medical school. My partner works in an entirely unrelated field, but doesn't plan to stay in that field. It recently occurred to us that (with appropriate training) he could switch to a job in healthcare that would enable us to work together after I finish my residency and begin my practice. We are trying to come up with an exhaustive list of jobs that exist in the office of a primary care physician in private practice. Can you help us flesh it out? The things we've thought of so far are nurse, nurse practitioner, billing and coding, office manager, bookkeeper. Please point out if you know of someone who does this job in the same office as their partner/spouse.

Hired... now, radio silence. Huh?

I've accepted it and I'm moving on, but I can't get this out of my head. I interviewed for a job and a few weeks later got an e-mail and follow-up phone call, telling me they wanted to hire me. They said "send us your availability," so I did. It was the end of that work week, and I checked in again at the start of the next week. They said "we're working out the logistics; we'll get back to you." That was over a week ago. I've heard nothing since. [more inside]

Want to quit but don't want to look like a jerk on my resume.

I was going to write a long explanation of why I want to quit, but really, none of it matters. I'm a PM in Advertising - I have worked at small agencies and probably never want a long term, real FT gig at a big shop. I would be okay contracting at a place like that. If I decide to quit this job, I will likely do so in favor of a contract, and will likely avoid a real FT gig for some time due to agency burn out (unless I get an offer from a known quantity, which is a possibility but not a certainty). All in all, I'd much rather be without anything to do and the option to do what I'd like instead, rather than where I am now, which is nothing to do and ready to lose my mind. [more inside]

What are the job prospects for people 50+?

I was continuously employed for almost 30 years. I never came close to being fired and was actively pursued by many companies in my field. Less than a year after my 50th birthday I was laid off. That was over 4 years ago and I have been unable to get even an interview since then. I feel like trying to find employment is becoming more futile as time passes. My question is "Have you heard of anybody over 50, out of work for over 4 years being hired in any field? If, as I suspect, the answer is no, then what are my options? I have worked freelance jobs in order to survive, but I have also used up all of my savings during this period. At this point I am way in debt, I have 2 kids going to college, I am unable to afford health insurance and my marriage hangs by a thread. I suffer from depression and my confidence in my skills has been severely shaken. I am not prepared to spend another 20 or 30 years in these circumstances, but what choice do I have?

Is taking a demotion career suicide?

I've been out of work for over a year, and the job search hasn't been going well. I recently received an offer that is $15k less than I was making at my prior position, and is a demotion in title(From "Senior Programmer", to "Developer I"). When I come home from work, I no longer want work to come home with me.

I'm in my late 30's and I need a new career, one whose responsibilities focus on the things I am better at while avoiding the things I'm awful at that make me grit my teeth. I'm a bright person, with better than average people skills, innate tech savvy, and terrific problem solving abilities. I am plain-spoken and genuine and I have endless reserves of positivity that put people at ease. But I sink like a stone when asked to tackle long term projects that require planning, organization, and longer-term time management. I'm not amitious and I'm not competitive. I've fought so long to improve at my jobs by addressing these shortcomings, but now I'm wondering if I couldn't just find a job where these skills were less important to begin with. What kind of fields could I be looking into? Additional snowflakes inside. [more inside]

I'd like advice on where to post my resume, SF legal tech.

I'm in the Bay Area legal tech field. I'd like a job in SF proper, as my commute to Mountain View is brutal.
