Almost every job I have ever received came from responding to a Craigslist/Monster/Indeed.com ad. This strategy doesn't seem to work as well anymore, likely due to astounding increases in online application volume. Besides simply knowing someone at the company, what are other ways you've had success in getting interviews?

Starting fall 2010, I'll be going to grad school (Master's) in a pretty esoteric field (studying texts from late antiquity, written in an obscure language). If I decide not to go on to the PhD, what can I do now and during my Master's to maximize my job opportunities when I get out? Are there any skills you would really strongly recommend that I pick up? A local vocational school is offering a 15-week program to train students to become independent insurance adjusters and hopefully pass the Texas All Lines Adjuster exam. I'm sure the 15-week training program is insanely expensive, but supposedly the independent insurance adjuster gig is considered pretty lucrative--especially for someone like me without a college degree. Anyone have any advice for someone stuck in dead end job and considering plunking down the money and time to become an independent insurance adjuster? Can a guy make a living as licensed independent insurance adjuster?

My yearly take-home income at my day job is about 17K. I'm starting to reevaluate exactly how long I can live on something like that, and I'd like some advice. Is it foolish to leave a steady paycheck in a bad economy, even if that paycheck is peanuts, for a "possibly" more lucrative option? For those of you who have left a job you were unhappy with when times were rough, do you regret it? [more inside]

I'm a graduate student in NYC (social work) who is looking for a summer job. I saw this thread but it was written when the economy was much better! What is it that people will pay for in these times? I'm totally unsure what it is I should be looking for. I check Craigslist (jobs and gigs) almost every day, and have also done all the search engines. I thought that I'd just temp, but that seems unlikely given the financial situation. I'm great with kids, but I worry about making $8 working my butt off at a day camp. I'm on care.com and sittercity.com looking for babysitting gigs, but nothing's coming up! What is it that I could do?!

I was recently passed over for an interview for a great job because of (I strongly believe) my lack of references (which the ad requested, but I submitted without anyway because my other qualifications were strong). I don’t have any references. Not professional. Not personal. I’m dependable (to a fault!), hardworking, and stable (years-long resume gap notwithstanding), but I have no way of proving this. I suffered from crippling depression and anxiety for years... [more inside]

A friend was just fired from my department for somewhat vague reasons. I've heard the story from my friend, and the managers have yet to say anything to the rest of us. As far as I can tell, my friend did nothing scandalous, illegal, or that violated my employer's policies. My friend is also not lazy. Everyone in the department is confused, and our morale is clearly shot. How do I support my friend and my coworkers? How can I/we move on enough to get day-to-day work done? [more inside]

I saw a website or read an article about an ergonomic "cubicle" that was actually a very large, balanced sphere. The person would lie down inside the sphere in a perfectly supporting "chair" (somewhat like a first-class recliner), facing upwards; the keyboard was at lap level, and the monitor hung from the top of the sphere. Now I can't find it. Help?
