Spring/Summer seasonal jobs in the US (that allow some solitude)

I need a change I'm looking for seasonal (/not career) jobs in the US that are not as people-heavy as being a camp counselor or tour guide. (Something like working at an information desk is OK.) Anywhere is OK as long as it's fairly easy to find housing, or housing is provided. [more inside]

I'm thirty years old, and it's my first semester of grad school after working in the corporate world for 8 years. It just kind of hit me that I'm going to have a summer vacation for the first time in forever. Whoa, awesome, but what to do with myself? Also, how to fund it? [more inside]

Will work for no pay, but a litte prestige wouldn't hurt.

How should I go about contacting non-profits about taking me, a relatively inexperienced college sophomore, on as an unpaid summer intern? I'm contacting these organizations cold, and could use some help figuring out my initial approach- what information should I include? Is there anything I can say that will make the recipient of my email more likely to seriously consider my proposal? Do I even stand a reasonable chance of that happening to begin with? [more inside]

Finding a summer job in a bad economy?!

I'm a graduate student in NYC (social work) who is looking for a summer job. I saw this thread but it was written when the economy was much better! What is it that people will pay for in these times? I'm totally unsure what it is I should be looking for. I check Craigslist (jobs and gigs) almost every day, and have also done all the search engines. I thought that I'd just temp, but that seems unlikely given the financial situation. I'm great with kids, but I worry about making $8 working my butt off at a day camp. I'm on care.com and sittercity.com looking for babysitting gigs, but nothing's coming up! What is it that I could do?!

Advice on finding a non-teaching but education-related job for a college student.

I need to find a summer job. Ideally I'd like to do something related to education, as I'm hoping to work in education (explained in more detail inside) when I'm finished with my own education - but I am much more interested in research and theory than in classroom work, so I'm having a hard time coming up with ideas. I'm interested in ideas that are very tangentially related to education as well as ones that are very related. [more inside]
