LaTeX + pdf = employment fail? I am looking for a job and have been using LaTeX to generate my resume and cover-letter. At a recent job interview I was told that they weren't able to print my resume. It looked fine on their computer but when they printed it, it was as if most of the document had been whited-out: a couple of phrases appeared approximately where they should but, most of it was just missing. I'm moving to Chicago in the fall. I have no job prospects at the moment, but I'd like to before I get there. Ideally I would like to work for a non-profit theater in some capacity to build up my applicable skills for later on, but ultimately I'd be fine working for any kind of non-profit. I've found a few websites with job listings, and I know I should probably start sending out my resume to places I'd like to work that don't have current postings, but I'm not quite clear on the timing. It seems awkward to say, "Hello, I'd like this job... in 4 months." But I don't want to arrive with a lease, a rapidly diminishing bank account and nothing else. Advice?
If nothing comes through, I will become a barista. Again. But I'd rather not.

MonsterFilter: I've had my resume up on Monster for at least 6 months now and I've only had 17 hits - is this normal, are there a bunch of tricks I don't know about, or are employers only using Monster to post vacancies, as opposed to using it to search for prospective employees?

My last job has been a terrible, terrible mess for which I am quite responsible. However, every other job I have had has gone well. How should I deal with this on my resume? I've even toyed with the idea of deleting the job entirely but this is difficult as it is my last job. Has anyone had similar experiences?

I've been unemployed for a few months, and have been actively looking for work, with no luck. All I have to go on are classified ads and limited online resources. I have two sneaking suspicions: 1) there are lots of jobs that don't show up in those venues, so how do I find them? and 2) HR departments are generally an impediment to getting a foot in the door, so how do I get past them?
