I'm moving to Chicago in the fall. I have no job prospects at the moment, but I'd like to before I get there. Ideally I would like to work for a non-profit theater in some capacity to build up my applicable skills for later on, but ultimately I'd be fine working for any kind of non-profit. I've found a few websites with job listings, and I know I should probably start sending out my resume to places I'd like to work that don't have current postings, but I'm not quite clear on the timing. It seems awkward to say, "Hello, I'd like this job... in 4 months." But I don't want to arrive with a lease, a rapidly diminishing bank account and nothing else. Advice?
If nothing comes through, I will become a barista. Again. But I'd rather not.

I've recently been appointed editor of a UK-based computer/tech magazine and website, and need to hire someone to bring the team up to full strength. In the UK, the majority of media jobs are advertised in the Guardian's Media section on Mondays, and on its companion website. However, I'd like to advertise in in other English-speaking countries but don't know where to place the ad. [more inside]

I currently work for the government and recently applied for another job in a different location (still with the government). The new job description sounds like it was written for me. I am currently doing the exact same job and more at the same pay grade. I am extremely well qualified and went to one of the best schools in the country for this field. The problem is – I didn’t even get past the first hurdle to be considered for an interview. [more inside]

My question is two part:
Employers and HR people (or anyone else with input): You have received resumes from potential hires. All the resumes are standard with Education, Experience, Skills, etc. What are some of the things you wished you knew about the applicant before calling them for an interview? I'm not talking about questions like "Tell me more about your education." I'm asking about the questions that the resume creates in your head that aren't necessarily specific to the resume. Perhaps these are questions that traditional resumes don't cover. Interview are very costly in terms of time. I guess these are the type of questions that if you saw them spelled out on a resume you would have been even more or less interested in interviewing them.
Everyone else: If you were applying for a job, what would you want to know before applying that the ad would have left out? I'm not looking for answers like wages. I mean deeper things that go through your mind when applying.
Hopefully these questions aren't to vague, I am just looking at this to hopefully be a better hiring guru. Thank for your answers!

My wife is pregnant (yay!), but is currently between jobs (boooo). However, she currently has several positions she's applying to. At what point in the hiring process should she be divulging the fact that she will have to take maternity leave relatively soon?

I'm in the market for some web design. In the short term, I need a good freelance person who's hip to XHTML, CSS, usability, etc, not a flash or photoshop-doc-cut-up-with-fireworks person. I'm having a hard time finding people like this via craigslist, monster, friends, etc. Is there a secret website where all the submitters to CSS Zen Garden go to look for freelance gigs? If you are an awesome designer, how would you be most likely to hear about my job? [more inside]
