I'm stuck in a contracting loop and I need career advice :(
I'm about to finish up a 9 month contract at a major pharmaceutical. I was on contract for 6-months and got extended the final 3. Before that I was out of work for a few months after being laid off from my previous job. That involved supporting remote synchronization software as well as SQL work. I graduated with a major in Information Studies and I've worked help desk positions in the past. [more inside]

I need to find a summer job. Ideally I'd like to do something related to education, as I'm hoping to work in education (explained in more detail inside) when I'm finished with my own education - but I am much more interested in research and theory than in classroom work, so I'm having a hard time coming up with ideas. I'm interested in ideas that are very tangentially related to education as well as ones that are very related. [more inside]

I've been toying with the idea of going back to school for a graduate degree in linguistics. I know the academic job market for linguists is terrible — about as small and tight as they get these days, from what I hear. But what can you tell me about the non-academic job market? Other than speech pathology, are there any branches of linguistics that are in demand in the real world? [more inside]

I’ve been chronically underemployed since I graduated from college. At the moment I am at home with my infant son, which will be my primary employment probably for the next 2-3 years. I want to start preparing now to improve my career potential down the line. Right now I’m pursuing creative ambitions, but they aren’t necessarily practical and it seems sensible to keep an eye on the pragmatic. [more inside]

I've finished my teacher education program and now I want a job. I sent out resumes to every school system I was interested in and followed up with the basic "Just want to confirm you received it" blah blah blah. I've been told that, now that some systems are posting openings, I should be calling them regularly to keep them aware of my name. But... what do I say?
