I'm a grown-up, but I still don't know what I want to be...

Having spent the last year+ underemployed, I need a new direction. I've got a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a dormant PE license, and a dead-end resume. I'm currently "working" for profits from an unprofitable mechanic shop doing brakes, radiators, and whatnot. It seems like all the engineering job listings require deep, specific experience--so I'm not qualified-- or are entry-level and I'm overqualified. [more inside]

When I come home from work, I no longer want work to come home with me.

I'm in my late 30's and I need a new career, one whose responsibilities focus on the things I am better at while avoiding the things I'm awful at that make me grit my teeth. I'm a bright person, with better than average people skills, innate tech savvy, and terrific problem solving abilities. I am plain-spoken and genuine and I have endless reserves of positivity that put people at ease. But I sink like a stone when asked to tackle long term projects that require planning, organization, and longer-term time management. I'm not amitious and I'm not competitive. I've fought so long to improve at my jobs by addressing these shortcomings, but now I'm wondering if I couldn't just find a job where these skills were less important to begin with. What kind of fields could I be looking into? Additional snowflakes inside. [more inside]

Career Coaching recommendations please! (especially in LA)

I'm looking for a professional careers coach in LA to give me advice about changing careers (especially ones who are good at talking with MBA grads who don't necessarily want a typical MBA-type job). The variety of coaches available out there is a bit confusing and some of them are expensive - can anyone personally recommend one? And what criteria should I be judging them on anyway? [more inside]

SO offered job in another city. I'm not sold on it being a hot idea.

Short version: My wife has been offered a two year position in another city. I want to support her and this may be a good opportunity for her, but my instinct says it would be a mistake for our future and our finances. For the many MeFites who have undoubtedly been in similarly sized shoes: aside from budgets and plus/minus lists, what do we need to be considering when making this decision and what is a good way to create consensus if it seems like we can't agree? side business + 9to5 for the man = difficult resume situation
