My girlfriend is in the middle of applying to phd programs all over the country, and a parallel job job (k-12 educator) may not be easily available where we're going. I'm trying to prepare for alternatives so I can land on my feet. [more inside]
I would like to include in my cover letter the sentiment that the years I took off from work (for reasons I touch on) make me hungry for any job I take on. I would really like a job that gave me things to think about, something to focus on and obsess over. How can I put this that doesn't use the word "hungry" and makes me sound more like a dedicated worker and less like a slightly crazed person? My thesaurus's suggestion of "could eat a horse" is not helping.

Looking for experiences of job seekers who were offered a job long after the final interview. What is the LONGEST amount of time you have waited for a verbal and written offer? Some background: i quit my job somewhat unexpectedly to relocate after some crummy Life Things happened. I have been job searching for almost 7 months. I work in academic research (coordination and managerial roles, I am not a trained phd researcher). Back in the late fall I had a promising phone interview. The in person portion did not go quite as well, but I still had a good feeling. They told me that hiring occurs at a glacial pace and I probably wouldn't hear from them for a vague amount of time. I want this job and I want to convinced myself that maybe I am still in the running, but I still feel like I would have heard at least something by now. I was also told I would be reimbursed for part of my travel since it was out f state. It had been two months and nothing. I know they have not hired for the position yet and I was told it would be slow, but... Your experiences with long hiring processes? Or time between final interviews and offers or rejections?
Something upsetting happened at work that makes me feel totally undermined, but I'm not sure how to handle it. Can I get some help from the office politics gurus of MeFi? [more inside]

I've been offered to be hired where I have been a contractor. However, there is a health insurance issue that would cost me a lot of money for several months. But I would have a great retirement plan. I have nothing in savings and $100k I just consolidated in student loans, so this issue is just complicating things. [more inside]
Having spent the last year+ underemployed, I need a new direction. I've got a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a dormant PE license, and a dead-end resume. I'm currently "working" for profits from an unprofitable mechanic shop doing brakes, radiators, and whatnot. It seems like all the engineering job listings require deep, specific experience--so I'm not qualified-- or are entry-level and I'm overqualified. [more inside]
Earlier this week I started working at a flour mill driving tractor trailers, after 2 months of training at a truck driving school to obtain a CDL, and I am having doubts about this decision. [more inside]

I just received a job offer yesterday at the place of business that I temp at. It requires that I stay there for at least one year, or else I must pay a fee. I like the thought of having full-time work with benefits and am very thankful, but I don't feel that I fit in the city I'm in currently and didn't see myself staying for another year. But I have to be careful about any risks I take with leaving my job because I don't have a family (as they were abusive) or anyone to rely on financially should things go south. Is this a good deal? Should I take this job? [more inside]
Hi! Quick question for people who conduct employment interviews. I have a job interview in two days. I would like to take a small notepad with me and jot down the pertinent things discussed that I will need to consider should I be offered the position, and make a move from my current job. I am afraid I will not remember accurately the important aspects, such as salary, benefit details, and other kind of crucial stuff I will need to consider. [more inside]

So my fiance is very smart, hardworking, great with people, courteous, etc and so forth. He's currently working as a lead teller at a large banking corporation. He's been there for a while, and the management staff over him have all rotated and gone from being pretty good managers to people that make working there frankly awful for him. He of course wants to leave, but both of our experience has been that looking at places that post lots of classifieds from different sources is that you may as well mail your application to the void. SO! What are your recommendations for specific employers whose job postings we should keep an eye on? [more inside]

I've been job searching for the past couple of months. Some online listings compel you to apply for them through a recruiter site. I try to avoid doing this, because I've been spammed as a result by sites like Careerbuilder.com who apparently don't vet their partners very well. [more inside]

I have $40,000+ in debt, a bachelors degree in criminal justice, an EMT-B license, a basic computer tech certificate, 4 years of customer service experience as a banquet server, a bad driving history, and one misdemeanor - how can I find a better job than being a banquet server? What can I do to be competitive? Should I attend police academy or not? What are my options - what can I do to improve my life? [more inside]
My peers all have careers, spouses, houses, families ... while I'm single and thinking of moving to Germany as that's the only way I'll be able to afford a second Bachelors. (I want to study something STEM related to break out of this job rut I'm in). I can't help but think of it as an incredibly lonely endeavour - to study a new language and then attempt to go to Uni all over again with people more than a decade younger than I, in a country where I know no one at all ... and to top it off, I was never very good at making friends and I am not close to my family members at all. Are my misgivings valid or should I grit my teeth and just go ahead? I feel stuck, I can't move forwards but I can't stay where I am either. I don't know what to do. [more inside]

My landlord informed me last week that he's planning to sell my current flat in March and that I will have to move out sometime around then. That's not too big a deal except that I have been growing more dissatisfied in my current job due to a combination of politics and boredom. That said, there are very few jobs in my field in the local area and so moving job will also require moving house. Am I mad to try and do this by March? [more inside]

The problem is, we are in an industry that is incredibly stressful and demanding and low-paying, although relatively mobile (I can work from basically where ever I want). I am perfectly happy just sitting by her and we both do work, but then I get distracted. What are some ways to spend more time with her?

Hi All, I am suffering from major career burnout and I hope you can help. I am a 31 yo chick who has been working in IT for the last 8 years. The first 4 years were ok, since I worked in software consultancy and did not get involved in politics and silly meetings. I was never planning to work in IT, I just fell into it, working in support and working my way up to Consultancy. I have made the dumb but financially viable choice of becoming a Business Analyst 4 years ago. I hate every single minute of it; the politics, the lack of career prospects, the boredom, the lack of creativity and constant role playing. I am a creative person at heart; but I have no idea how to branch the hell out of IT. Hope someone has gone through this and can provide some advice? Thanks!
