Interviews are done. Now what?

When is it appropriate to follow-up with a hiring manager after interviews (and reference checks) have been completed? I did ask for a timeline during the interview and I was told that they would be in touch "soon". The posting stated that they wanted someone to start in early October, when the position becomes vacant. [more inside]

Forgot to mention something important at job interview -- what now?

I just had a job interview for a job I really want that went really well. So well that I forgot to mention something kind of important: I started a part-time retail job between applying and hearing back about the interview (it was almost a month and I've been unemployed since May, so needed something to pay the bills) that I'd have to give notice at, but I'd hopefully be able to get shifts covered. I haven't had any direct e-mail contact with the person who interviewed me, only with the administrative assistant. They would want me to start ASAP. I'll probably be going in for a second interview sometime next week. How and when do I mention this? More important, how and when do I mention this in a way that isn't going to ruin my chances of getting this job?

Do You Work for ODSP? Should I?

Next week I have my final interview for a caseworker position with ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program). If they want to hire me, I'll have a tough choice to make - and it's even tougher because I don't know anyone who works for the program (or even in similar programs). Can you give me some idea about what it's like to work there, or in similar positions? [more inside]

Is it worth leaving one job for another for the same pay?

I'm employed now but have been job-searching for a few months. I've finally found a company that I'd like to work for. The disappointing part is, the final offer they've made is for a lower salary than I'd wanted; after crunching the numbers, I would be earning the same as what I earn at my current job, with no title change. Is it a good idea to move to a new employer for equivalent pay, if the only discernable difference between the two is that the new job seems more interesting? [more inside]

Help, I have a real job!

I'm due to start my first job post-PhD on Monday. It's a tech job outside of academia, vaguely related to my field of study (but not my research). I've never had a job in an office before. What should I expect the first day? What do I need to bring with me (besides documents for an I-9)? What am I supposed to wear? (I'm assuming err on the side of formal relative to what people were wearing when I interviewed, but not as formal as for the interview.)

Letting go- failure or quitting? what's the difference?

I am having a hard time letting go of something. I have been told that I have an amazing ability to persevere and I can, unfortunately, keep on trying to make things work- for ever! Needless to say, letting a current bad situation go is proving to be near impossible because I see doing that as outright failure, not to mention a complete waste of 1+ year. My friends say its not failure, and I don't think I understand the difference. So I am hoping that maybe you can explain with personal anecdotes? [more inside]

How can I get a job as a grant writer for a non-profit organization?

I quit law school (a very prestigious, top five school) four years ago and have been working in education ever since (first as an aide for Autistic children, then as a substitute teacher for two years). In this time, my student loans have been accruing interest and keeping me up at night. I can qualify for loan forgiveness programs as long as I work for a non-profit or a school. Unfortunately, the work I was doing for the past four years did not count because I worked for private companies that contracted out to schools. For many reasons,(see below) I would now like to break into grant writing. I have written three successful grant proposals in my career (one for an educational outreach program in college, one for a Fulbright Grant, and one for an international NGO). I am currently strengthening my grant writing skills by taking webinars and utilizing other free online resources. How can I present myself as a viable candidate for these grant writing jobs? And how do I explain the many changes of direction on my resume and the long winding road I took to get here? [more inside]

What are inter-disciplinary and atypical uses for math MSc?

I have just completed my MSc in mathematics in Europe. I do enjoy math, but I spent my uni years feeling like a autodidact hippie marooned on an island full of Mr and Mrs I-Want-A-Good-Job. Time for another round of name that career!

I was wondering if any Mefites might currently work in, or know someone who works in, a career that meets the following qualifications: 1. Involves a ton of writing. Any type of writing. Even if one spends most of one's time crafting emails, that would be sufficient. 2. Is relatively easy to get into with only a bachelor's degree in a possibly unrelated subject. 3. Is generally not discriminatory based on age (in other words, someone who is in their late 40s/early 50s would not be seen as teetering on the edge of their grave). [more inside]

Dismissed from full time position, but HR offers to reclassify

I was recently dismissed from a new full time job less than 3 months after starting it. A recent note from HR has kindly offered to reclassify the position as a temporary one if it would help me. Horrible Networking Experience -- Should I Keep Quiet?

I'm looking to make a career shift to a new city and move to a slightly different area of my professional field. A while back, I met a great contact ("Bob") here in my current city who has a giant professional network both here and in the city where I'd like to relocate. He has been very helpful and recently put me into contact with one of his "best friends" ("Jane"), who he ensured me would have valuable insights into the job market in my target city. I arranged a brief phone call with Jane, and it went horribly. Jane was rude, condescending, and made it clear she was talking to me only as a favor to Bob. Now Bob excitedly wants a readout of the conversation, with details of how Jane was able to help me. Should I tell him the truth about our conversation or just be vague and said it went fine?
