Ontario Crime Analyst Qualifying Exam -What's on it?!

I've applied to a police station in Ontario, Canada for a crime analyst position and have been selected to write their qualifying exam. The position itself deals with Microsoft Excel to help the detectives identify crime trends and patterns with Excel. Other than this, I have no idea what else might be tested and was hoping that someone might have some idea. [more inside]

How should a professional young man dress for a job?

In my old job (a small creative outfit), I used to wear what is known as "sport-chic attire", which pretty much means a nice shirt and high-end jeans. It was all about having a shirt for every day of the week with 2 or 3 pants and 2 or 3 pairs of shoes. Now that I'm changing jobs, should I change my dress code as well? [more inside]

How do I market a Biology degree for non-related internships?

I'm a sophomore biology major but I want to get internships in consulting firms or pharmaceutical companies, both of which are coming to my school tomorrow for career fairs. Unfortunately, I'm a biology major which isn't necessarily the most marketable major in the world. My experience is mainly through clinical research and I held three jobs last summer but none of them are related to the internships I'm looking for. [more inside]

Should I even mention former job?

I just got unceremoniously canned from my part time (12 hour) job, which I started beginning of January, for a no call no show. I didn't MEAN to no call, no show. My full-time job gave us the Federal holiday off, and my brain made Monday into Sunday. I know, super lame. I could get into the legal and other issues that are taking quite a bit of my mental energy, but what's the point. Just know I've been somewhat distracted, to say the least. [more inside]

Might get fired! how do I plan?

The CEO of my company is kind of... mercurial, and given to dramatic gestures. I am... not in a great position to get a new job. Help me plan for the worst? [more inside]

How to negotiate severance after being let go from my job.

I was unexpectedly let go from my job yesterday. I’ve only been there 4 months, and it was quite a surprise. I’d like to try and negotiate severance as I haven’t signed anything yet, and was told HR would be contacting me in the next couple days. I’m not sure how to do this as this is the first time I’ve been fired. [more inside]

Transitioning from profit to not-for-profit at 40: what's negotiable?

After a decade in for-profit marketing in a secondary city, I'm being seriously considered for something close to a dream job in Toronto. The main issue is that there'd be a major salary drop -- from CAD$75,000 a year to sub-CAD$50,000, and I'd be moving from a place where the cost of living is low, and my house is mortgage-free and paid off, to, well, Toronto. My current location is not commutable to Toronto. What can I negotiate with my (hopeful) employer to help make up the difference? [more inside]

Is it always a good idea to answer job interview questions by the book?

Okay, so you print out your resume, business card, and your portfolio. You try to look impeccable for the interview. You try to get into the right mood and you even practice some tongue twisters to avoid stuttering. But what about the interview itself? How do you approach age-old questions without sounding rehearsed? [more inside]

Should I ask about 2nd interview after phone interview a while back?

I had a phone interview with a HR recruiter of a company three weeks ago. We both acknowledged that the company won't fill the full time position until at least a month later while I remain working as a freelancer. Now, I am about to finish this project and I wonder if I should call to let the recruiter know that I will be free in the following weeks. The reason being that the company is located out of state so it won't be easy to take a personal leave for it if I am on a new project. I understand that the recruiter would call back if I am moved on to the next step but since my status on their career site is still "in progress" and I am on the "take the next project or not" situation. Do you think it would be appropriate to call and ask about a in-person interview? Thanks for your help.

How do I constructively refuse to become a people manager?

I am a senior technical specialist in my company, and I've been asked to manage a small team. How to lie for the jobs you don't want while waiting for your dream job?

While I'm sending out resumes, networking with alumni, etc., for my dream job, bills also need to be paid. I figure I should try to get any gig that pays at all, at least temporarily. I suck at Scrabble and I need Words to express Things. Help?

I would like to include in my cover letter the sentiment that the years I took off from work (for reasons I touch on) make me hungry for any job I take on. I would really like a job that gave me things to think about, something to focus on and obsess over. How can I put this that doesn't use the word "hungry" and makes me sound more like a dedicated worker and less like a slightly crazed person? On job searching and hope.

Looking for experiences of job seekers who were offered a job long after the final interview. What is the LONGEST amount of time you have waited for a verbal and written offer? Some background: i quit my job somewhat unexpectedly to relocate after some crummy Life Things happened. I have been job searching for almost 7 months. I work in academic research (coordination and managerial roles, I am not a trained phd researcher). Back in the late fall I had a promising phone interview. The in person portion did not go quite as well, but I still had a good feeling. They told me that hiring occurs at a glacial pace and I probably wouldn't hear from them for a vague amount of time. I want this job and I want to convinced myself that maybe I am still in the running, but I still feel like I would have heard at least something by now. I was also told I would be reimbursed for part of my travel since it was out f state. It had been two months and nothing. I know they have not hired for the position yet and I was told it would be slow, but... Your experiences with long hiring processes? Or time between final interviews and offers or rejections?
