Hey Mefites, here's my question:
My younger sister, mother, and I suffered years of abuse at the hands of an alcoholic stepfather - physical, verbal, etc. When we were younger, my sister and I were absolutely focused on getting the fuck out and did, getting scholarships to great schools, thankfully. My mom, not so much. She is no longer in a relationship with him, but they have been living together for economic reasons - she needs his disability paycheck to pay the bills (all of which are in her name, including the mortgage payment.)

I am looking to expand my business in a new way and and would like to know what salary to offer for the position. This is a new experience for me so I have no idea what to offer. Is there a resource that could calculate the job with the market and give me an idea where to start with a figure?

I don't know how to find a job. I made good grades in college. I've done some good internships. Usually once I get to the interview process, I get offered a job. I just don't know where to start with my job search.
Looking for anecdotal advice. How did you get your first break into the career you wanted?

Hi,
I am about to graduate university and went through a long process of deciding what I wanted to major in and what I wanted to do after school. Suffice to say that those questions have been grappled with. I'm planning to get an MA in economics, and plan to take a year off to take my GRE and the appropriate math courses I need. In that year I'd like to do some sort of public service work in economic development (in the states, not in some 3rd world country).

Job hunting filter: I’ve been at the same job, in a leadership position for 9 years. I think I’m finally ready to move on and have found a job available at a university that I might be qualified for and am planning to apply for. The application is somewhat extensive and at one point it asks if I have ever been fired from a job. Unfortunately, the answer is yes.

I was laid off from my job almost 2 years ago, and while it was depressing, I was unhappy and was starting to explore a new industry, anyway. In the past 2 years, I have spent a year and a half going back to school full time for a more specific degree that supplements my BA. I also took on a few internships along the way.
I graduated in January and have been looking for a full time position without any sort of success.
Clearly I am going about this in the wrong way; what should I be doing differently? More details below.

My son has had difficulty getting a job because he has quit previous jobs, and had some personal issues.. Apparently this information has been passed around by previous employers. No one has called him back for any job interviews in three months. My suggestion to him is just hang in there and in the interim donate time as a volunteer for the red cross etc. Maybe this will help him get his feet in the door. What are some things he could volunteer doing?
