Should I switch to my future career now or stay in dissatisfying job?

TL;DR: Current job: The good: relaxing, fancy title, nice perks/benefits, flexibility, easy schedule The bad: boring, frustrating, mundane, not in a field I love, full of micromanagers, no room for growth, no intellectual challenge A different job: The good: a field I think I want to be in, intellectually challenging, meaningful, room for growth The bad: loss of perks/benefits, potential loss of schedule flexibility, not easy, stressful, lots of unknowns Which would you chose? Performance review - good time to talk about leaving?

Hi, my friend is up for her performance review and has some specific issues and is wondering about the best approach: Her contract is up in September and she has no plans on renewing it because she will be moving out of the state. If she gets a job before September she plans on leaving sooner as well. Her performance review is tomorrow and she is wondering if she should mention any of this at all. Thanks!

Is a "janitor" position worth to take if want to work in a company?

Allow me not to mention what industry but this is what I am facing.... The skill set in the industry that I want to be working in doesn't require education or certification but talent and network. Unfortunately, I have none. Well, I do have the minimum skills I picked up along my journey but I know they are not enough. I searched and searched for entry position and still no luck getting one. Some day, I came across this job listing for a "janitor" in a facility that I would dream about working at. I applied....and got accepted. Good thing is I am "in" the industry but I won't get to touch what I want to do but cleaning up floors, toilet, kitchen....etc.. Now, my savings is almost up but janitor position seems don't earn good money either. I want to improve myself but I kept going backwards. I told my loved ones that it's an assistant position and I don't want to bring trouble to the managing people, which I won't. I am not sure what to do... Any suggestion?

Multiple interviews in one week... How to handle current job?

Hi all! Around 6 months ago, I took on a contracting/freelance (they use the terms interchangeably) position at a large company. Sadly, they have no intention on making the position permanent for any of the contractors in our department; this is in addition to me feeling the company isn't the right fit for me. As a result, I've started applying to other jobs. It's going surprisingly well and I've nailed down two interviews thus far... the problem, you may ask? How the heck do I get time away from my existing job? [more inside]

Post-doc job search, sh*tshow edition

The last two years of my doctoral education have involved some extraordinary circumstances that might raise eyebrows for someone looking at my CV. In a hyper-competitive job market where I was already kind of outlier, I think any kind of academic position is a long shot right now. How do I 1) explain my history to potential employers with minimal drama/"woe is me" details and 2) prepare for a likely transition to non-academic employment that still doesn't entirely shut the door on future university employment. Management Psychology

My company is going through new management. We were informed that positions will be cut. We were told by upper management to make sure our resume is set up and we have a Plan B and C. Does anyone know of any documentation/study on the correlation of how many individuals told by upper management to have a Plan B leave the company? I am curious on how many they are expecting to find other opportunities outside of the company. [more inside]

Do past job titles matter when looking for higher/management position?

Dear All, I have a question regarding my graphic job title. I am applying for jobs but am confused what's best to describe myself in terms of qualification on my resume. I graduated from a fine art program back in college and have been working for 10 years now. During these 10 years, I have been working for several related jobs but in relatively different fields, such as logo design, catalog layout, poster, photography, animation, video...etc., and now I am confused about what I am. My latest job is a one-man team producing graphic works from taking pictures of products to picking up catalogs from printers and eventually have them mailed out. And that was a jr. graphic designer position.... [more inside]

Am I crazy or are they purposely ignoring me?

I feel insane for even posting about this, but my (ever-so-slight) anxiety is getting the best of me! Around two months ago, I accepted a job with a great company. It is what they are calling a "W2 contractor" position. So, I'm a W2 employee where they take care of deducting taxes from my paycheck for me, but I don't receive any health benefits, PTO, etc. etc. I'm paid hourly, and my hourly wage is well above the norm, I'm guessing to help offset the lack of benefits. Some weeks I work 40 hours, others I work 15 or so... it depends on the workload available. Essentially, it's kind of like being a part time employee. [more inside]

what do I do now

I was blindsided by a termination from my job last week. PGY 4 Surgical resident contract not renewed - what now?

My friend would have been a PGY4 surgical resident this year but her contract was not renewed (aka she was fired) due to low test scores and slow to improve laparoscopy skills. She wasn't able to get anything and is now unemployed. Her program director has left her program, and never supported her so she is left without any guidance on what to do. Without any guidance she is a bit a drift. It would be helpful to know: 1) What are her chances of getting another surgical position 2) What are her chances of getting any medical position and how does she do that (she mentioned she would need to find somebody to sponsor her into the match) 3) Is there a job she can get right now? 4) Are there any resources (aside from her program) that she can contact for help?
