Post-doc job search, sh*tshow edition

The last two years of my doctoral education have involved some extraordinary circumstances that might raise eyebrows for someone looking at my CV. In a hyper-competitive job market where I was already kind of outlier, I think any kind of academic position is a long shot right now. How do I 1) explain my history to potential employers with minimal drama/"woe is me" details and 2) prepare for a likely transition to non-academic employment that still doesn't entirely shut the door on future university employment. Details inside.... [more inside]

Management Psychology

My company is going through new management. We were informed that positions will be cut. We were told by upper management to make sure our resume is set up and we have a Plan B and C. Does anyone know of any documentation/study on the correlation of how many individuals told by upper management to have a Plan B leave the company? I am curious on how many they are expecting to find other opportunities outside of the company. [more inside]

Do past job titles matter when looking for higher/management position?

Dear All, I have a question regarding my graphic job title. I am applying for jobs but am confused what's best to describe myself in terms of qualification on my resume. I graduated from a fine art program back in college and have been working for 10 years now. During these 10 years, I have been working for several related jobs but in relatively different fields, such as logo design, catalog layout, poster, photography, animation, video...etc., and now I am confused about what I am. My latest job is a one-man team producing graphic works from taking pictures of products to picking up catalogs from printers and eventually have them mailed out. And that was a jr. graphic designer position.... [more inside]

How to reflect on my resume that my job was unexpectedly "agile?"

I've officially had 2 job titles at my workplace of almost 7 years, but much of my day-to-day has been handling special projects and the stuff that no one else knows how to do. I'm having some trouble cramming all my duties underneath those job titles without my resume feeling clunky and bloated. [more inside]

what do I do now

I was blindsided by a termination from my job last week. In some respects it was a relief because my manager was extremely unpleasant and working around her mood swings was spiraling me into major depression and other health issues. However, I am now stuck with a 7 month job on my employment record (which obviously looks suspect), a litany of the aforementioned health issues, and no idea how to actually recover from this. I need help. Wall of text below (sorry). [more inside]

Jump ship or hold the course

I've been with the same Organization "Alpha" for five years and have been growing more and more dissatisfied. I'm on parental leave now and they have promised me a better position to return to than the one I left. Meanwhile, the boss of Organization "Beta" called me personally and offered me a job there. Both jobs have pros and cons and I can't decide which is the way to go. [more inside]

Reaching out to hiring manager after blowing phone screen

Applied for a dream job on the dream organization; a couple of days later got an email directly from the hiring manager (director of department) to schedule a phone chat. PGY 4 Surgical resident contract not renewed - what now?

My friend would have been a PGY4 surgical resident this year but her contract was not renewed (aka she was fired) due to low test scores and slow to improve laparoscopy skills. She wasn't able to get anything and is now unemployed. Her program director has left her program, and never supported her so she is left without any guidance on what to do. Without any guidance she is a bit a drift. It would be helpful to know: 1) What are her chances of getting another surgical position 2) What are her chances of getting any medical position and how does she do that (she mentioned she would need to find somebody to sponsor her into the match) 3) Is there a job she can get right now? 4) Are there any resources (aside from her program) that she can contact for help?
