Use headhunter as well as the boss-approved method to get an interview?

I was contacted about a job with a company by a HR recruiter (not from that company) on LinkedIn. I was aware of this job from the company’s website and also I have a friend who is working at that company in a peer position. That friend said he spoke to his boss, and his boss said I should apply for the job via the company's website, so I did. Would there be any benefit following up with the HR recruiter from LinkedIn anyway? [more inside]

Should I delete my LinkedIn profile?

Should I delete my LinkedIn profile? I currently have a low level, low wage job with the State government of the state I live in. I am looking for a new job that pays more anywhere in my town. I will be applying for a lot of jobs with the local state university. My friend recently got a really good job with the state university and when I asked her if she had a LinkedIn profile she told me she had never even heard of that site so she definitely did not need it. My classmate, my would-be boss

I just realized that the contact person/potential supervisor for a job I'm applying for was in my graduating class at our tiny alma mater. This could obviously work very much in my favor, but I'm also afraid it might not for snowflakey reasons. What's the best way to approach this in my application? [more inside]

How to say thanks

I had a job interview on Friday for a position I'm very excited about. I got the interview after speaking to a woman from this company at a job fair, who passed along my resume and promised to put in a good word for me since my advisor (who knows her professionally) spoke to her and vouched for me after I mentioned meeting her at the fair. I want to send her a thank you email but I could use some assistance on the details. [more inside]

How to do Social Media without being a Douchebag?

So, I've recently inherited the community and social media role for the company I work for. I'm hoping to use our social media presence to drive up engagement and get users to use our product (a niche-focused social network in the finance realm), but I want to do it without being a douchebag. Surprised With Being Let Go, Networking/Job Search 101 plz?

I was let go from my job last week - it was kind of a surprise, but I'm bouncing back and I was looking to leave the company anyway, so I'm not too broken up about that. I am not thrilled about the prospect of job hunting while unemployed (would have preferred to have landed a new job first) and am trying to get a handle on my next steps. I have some Networking 101-type questions that I need help with, as well as some questions about how best to frame what happened at the last job to recruiters/prospective new leads/interviewers, and how to best avoid ever being in this same situation ever again. Need help with job search techniques

I was laid off from my job almost 2 years ago, and while it was depressing, I was unhappy and was starting to explore a new industry, anyway. In the past 2 years, I have spent a year and a half going back to school full time for a more specific degree that supplements my BA. I also took on a few internships along the way. I graduated in January and have been looking for a full time position without any sort of success. Clearly I am going about this in the wrong way; what should I be doing differently? More details below. [more inside]
