Switching to a non-actuarial career

My wife and I are in the process of trying to relocate. For the past 3 years, I've been working as an actuary in Canada, but neither of us is happy living in the city we're currently in. For us, ideally we'd be able to find work in either Eastern Canada or Alberta/B.C. (this is partly due to a condition my wife has that would make living in other parts of Canada difficult). Prospects for UK law grad in the US?

I currently attend a top 2 law school in the UK (no prize for guessing which), and am interested in working in the US after I graduate. While I am aware that I will be eligible to take the bar exam in NY and California with a degree from a common law jurisdiction, would my prospects of landing a law firm gig be appreciably augmented if I go for an LLM (or perhaps even a JD) at a US law school? Problem: it's one grade lower than my current position. [more inside]

Discretion in job applications

I would like to send out job applications to companies that are close to my own company. For example one company is located in the same building as my current employer and everyone eats lunch in the same canteen. I would also like to apply to companies that are working on joint projects with my company -- where I am one of the representatives of my current company in the project/collaboration. Two questions: should I explicitly ask for discretion? Or is that a given and/or kind of shady sounding? Also, is it bad form to apply to the companies that are working with us where I am a team-member?

Notify potential employer about (potential) unavailability?

The ball's in my court (I think). Now what?

I have been halfheartedly looking for a new job. My current position does not leave me much time or energy for searching, plus I have had a lot of illness in my family in the last year, which is time-consuming and emotionally draining. When a supplier I work with mentioned that someone in her company had left recently, I asked her whether she plans to replace him, and she said she does. I emailed her my résumé, and she sent me the job listing. In her email, she asked me whether I was interested, and if not, to let her know what my concerns are so they could address them because "your résumé is great!" How do I respond in the most effective manner? [more inside]

I promise I'm actually a good employee!

I have an upcoming job interview for a fairly sales-oriented position in business. Putting aside that I'm not sure I want the position yet and that in my eyes it counts against the company that they put stock in this sort of thing, the company is about to send me a personality test which they use as a strong hiring indicator. I would prefer to ace the test, whatever that means, and have my actual interview and position discussion determine hiring. How should I go about answering a test that I don't believe will be reflective of my personality? [more inside]

How to navigate the tricky waters of possible multiple job offers?

I'm a UI/UX designer who is flat broke and unemployed. I'm independently interviewing for 2 positions at the moment and have 3-4 other positions that I have or am about to interview for through a recruiter. Some are temporary, some are temp-to-perm, and some are permanent. Some are also more interesting to me than others, including one that I'm most interested in which I've been waiting to hear back from for the past week or so. However, the temporary positions (2-4 weeks) have more immediate needs and are more likely to lay something on the table in the next few days if they end up giving me an offer. My question is: If I get a call that says "We'd like to offer you the position", how do I respond without an immediate yes and still be in consideration? [more inside]

Proactive or annoying?

Because of a story in the newspaper, I discovered that a local nonprofit will soon have a job opening that sounds like a perfect fit for me. The job is not posted on their website yet, but I was thinking of emailing someone there anyway just to let them know how interested I am in the organization, the job, and the changes they've made to make the job possible. Will this result in them looking more favorably on me when the job is posted, or in them looking at me as over-eager and unprofessional?
