How to list salary history when your currency has depreciated?

I'm applying for new jobs and have been asked to provide my salary history. I'm American and am applying for jobs in the US, but have most recently held jobs outside the US in a country where the currency has seriously depreciated in recent years (not the UK). How do I honestly provide the information without shortchanging myself? [more inside]

New job! But there's a catch. Help!

I have an absurdly stable job with great pay and benefits. The problem is, it is not what I want to do long-term and it is not a good cultural fit for me. YANM Employment Lawyer, 3 parter

So, I got royally screwed over. State: California. After a tenuous start with a new employer, it was clear my boss wasn't going to work with me to ensure my success on the team, so I started looking around. Found a new job, great fit, great company. Applied, interviewed, and was given an offer. Signed the offer, resigned (verbally) from the current job. [more inside]

Help me find a video-conference suite in Troy (or Albany), New York

Dear hivemind, I need your help! For some reason, Google Fu is failing me, and I am extremely short of time. Sometime today, I need to find a hardware-based videoconferencing suite in Troy, NY or Albany, NY, for a job interview I'll have on March 8 while visiting the area for a separate interview on March 7. To make things more complicated, I'll need to do one meeting at 5:45am EST and another at 9:45am EST. The (foreign) institution that is interviewing me, has not been very helpful. All they've said is that I'll need to find a suite that is compatible with a Tandberg Edge 95MXP system. And they want to do a test run on March 1. [more inside]

How to navigate the 'current boss as work reference' Catch-22?

I would have to break a small teaching contract to take a much more stable and lucrative admin job I interviewed for at the same university. Should I preemptively tell a new employer about a recent bankruptcy?

I'm hoping to start a new job soon and the company has extended an offer which I have accepted. However the offer is contingent on the results of a background check which I understand is either in progress or will be performed shortly. The problem is that this background check will show that I filed for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy early this year and received a discharge shortly thereafter. So while I wish I could take this moment to celebrate a great new opportunity, I'm afraid that the offer might be rescinded at any moment due to this new information. [more inside]

Should I apply for a federal job at the same office my MIL works in?

About nine months ago, I applied for a spot with the federal government, which was in line with what I previously did as a paralegal. I got a call back amazingly quickly -- but the hiring manager pointed out that someone with my unusual last name also worked in the office, and it turned out to be my step-mother-in-law. (I knew she did that type of work but I had no idea it was with that agency.) The hiring manager still wanted to interview me. I agreed to set-up an interview during that phone call, talked it over with my husband, and, the next day, emailed the hiring manager and said I was withdrawing my candidacy, to avoid the perception of impropriety. And then snowflakes fell. Details inside. [more inside]

What to tell interviewers about why I'm leaving my job?

I've received a "Performance Improvement Plan" due to poor output and communication problems. This is almost entirely due to issues in my personal life that are resolving themselves. However, at most companies (probably including mine), a PIP is basically a way to build a paper trail before firing someone. While I'm going to work as hard as I can to improve performance, this is probably the time to start looking for other jobs. What is ethical for me to tell interviewers about why I'm leaving my current position? There are plenty of things I can cite that I don't like about this job, but none of them would normally be enough for me to quit. [more inside]

Discretion in job applications

I would like to send out job applications to companies that are close to my own company. For example one company is located in the same building as my current employer and everyone eats lunch in the same canteen. I would also like to apply to companies that are working on joint projects with my company -- where I am one of the representatives of my current company in the project/collaboration. Two questions: should I explicitly ask for discretion? Or is that a given and/or kind of shady sounding? Also, is it bad form to apply to the companies that are working with us where I am a team-member?
