Competitive people pleaser seeks self-identity.

I have a deeply ingrained habit of being both a people pleaser and caring a lot about accomplishments, winning prizes, receiving accolades, getting praise and recognition from others. However, so much so that it clouds what I really want to do in terms of my career. Was this you? Did you recover from it? How did you sort it out? [more inside]

Working in Rutherford, NJ. Where should I live? Can I live in NYC?

I'm a single, college-educated, mid-twenties male who will very likely be relocating from the West Coast to the Tri-State area in a few months for a full-time desk job in Rutherford, New Jersey. I'd love to know your recommendations for affordable rooms, apartments, studios, etc. in safe and convenient neighborhoods. [N.B. I grew up in and lived in South Brooklyn for many years, so I'm familiar with the NYC area, but I've never lived in NJ nor ever considered living there in the past.] [more inside]

CareerFilter: for life or money?

Help me navigate a tricky career dilemma! I have two similar but different offers; I'm qualified for both. In the absence of a choice I'd take either one. One is less certainty but more pay and better long-term, the other feels better but the pay and long-term advancement are poor, i.e. I'd have to change jobs to get promoted significantly. I'm 28. How do I market a Biology degree for non-related internships?

I'm a sophomore biology major but I want to get internships in consulting firms or pharmaceutical companies, both of which are coming to my school tomorrow for career fairs. Unfortunately, I'm a biology major which isn't necessarily the most marketable major in the world. My experience is mainly through clinical research and I held three jobs last summer but none of them are related to the internships I'm looking for. [more inside]

Help I'm Lost

My peers all have careers, spouses, houses, families ... while I'm single and thinking of moving to Germany as that's the only way I'll be able to afford a second Bachelors. (I want to study something STEM related to break out of this job rut I'm in). I can't help but think of it as an incredibly lonely endeavour - to study a new language and then attempt to go to Uni all over again with people more than a decade younger than I, in a country where I know no one at all ... and to top it off, I was never very good at making friends and I am not close to my family members at all. Career Change Options for a Subdued Business Analyst?

Hi All, I am suffering from major career burnout and I hope you can help. I am a 31 yo chick who has been working in IT for the last 8 years. The first 4 years were ok, since I worked in software consultancy and did not get involved in politics and silly meetings. I was never planning to work in IT, I just fell into it, working in support and working my way up to Consultancy. I have made the dumb but financially viable choice of becoming a Business Analyst 4 years ago. I hate every single minute of it; the politics, the lack of career prospects, the boredom, the lack of creativity and constant role playing. I am a creative person at heart; but I have no idea how to branch the hell out of IT. Hope someone has gone through this and can provide some advice? Thanks!

Career Crisis- How to get hired after only 2 months at current job?

Hello, Metafilter! Long time lurker (10 years), first time poster. To sum it up- after a failed stint as an AmeriCorps VISTA (6 months) following graduation from the University of South Carolina with a degree in International Studies and a minor in Economics- I have spent a year unemployed, a year as a bank teller, another year unemployed, and over a year as a server and a tax season as a tax pro at H&R block. I went back to school during the time as a server to get enough credits to sit for the CPA (one computer apps class away from obtaining accounting certificate at a local community college). Moved back to SC and spent from 07/12-06/13 as an Assistant Service Manager at a car dealership (hated it because A, I have asthma and missed a ton of work due to complications from working outside, B, I knew nothing about cars, and C, I am not a fan of Customer Service/commission pay). How to get time off new job for mental health reasons

I recently started a new job that has a very strict attendance policy and I have no vacation or sick time accrued. My doctor has recommended to me that I attend a 2 week inpatient program for the mental issues I've been dealing with. I'm still thinking about it, but if I did decide to do it, who at my company do I need to speak to and what should I say so that I don't end up losing my job for taking that time off. This is my first job so your answers can assume I know absolutely nothing about how these things work.

Help me figure out a career/educational path

I'm current at my first job out of school and have been here almost two years now. It hasn't been what I expected, and sadly, not in a positive way.
