My mom recently gave me a ring that she's had for a while. It's a star sapphire with 2 tiny diamonds, set in a 10k white gold band. Therein lies the problem: I have a nickel allergy, and thus can't wear 10k gold. What do I need to know/what can I expect with regard to getting the stones set in a new band? [more inside]

How to re-assure a relative that a reputable jeweler will not steal her diamonds while resizing her rings? [more inside]
I've just inherited a really gorgeous, old, very high-quality set of pearls from a family member. In addition to making sure they don't need to be restrung so that I don't accidentally break them, I'd actually like to see about breaking the set apart. Because they have strong sentimental value to many of the women in my family, if I could find a large enough quantity of identical pearls, I'd like to have my one set split into two or three sets to give to other family members, each containing some of the original pearls from my necklace. So my question is, who is the best jeweler in the DC metro area to find out whether such a project is feasible? Cost is not really a factor, at least not at this stage of the process. Thanks!
Looking to propose to my girlfriend imminently(!!!) Part of the proposal is an adventure overseas in order to find the perfect engagement ring (and have a good time). I'm looking for tips on which shops to visit. I'm hoping we'll find a nice antique ring that suits her perfectly, but am open to new rings as well. [more inside]
Can you recommend a jeweler in the Boston metro area who can resize a gold ring for me?
I am planning to buy a jewelry cleaner for my brother-in-law who sells antique jewelry (and other antiques). Will an ultra-sonic cleaner be more useful than a steam cleaner or visa-verse. Or, does one need both to be effective?
After seeing Ai Weiwei's sunflower seed exhibit at Tate Modern in London with my girlfriend earlier this year, I was inspired to translate the afternoon into a thoughtful Christmas gift. I've purchased 6 of the seeds on eBay and need help finding a jeweler in Los Angeles that can help me design a pair of earrings incorporating them. HELP! [more inside]

I am ready to pop the question and am looking for places in Chicago to buy a wedding ring. Has anyone had success with a jeweler buying a wedding ring that they recommend? I want to customize the design a bit.

Know of any jewelers that carry Canadian diamond wedding bands in North Jersey or Manhattan? I need a wedding band (getting married in 2 weeks!), and my fiancé doesn't want an African diamond after watching Blood Diamond. I'd like someone I can deal with in person rather than a website. I have a three-year-old Swiss Army officers watch that I took to a (trusted) jeweler last week to have the battery replaced. The next day condensation appeared inside the glass and now the thing has gone kaput. It had been working fine up until the battery died (and for a few hours after it was replaced). Do you think the jeweler is liable...or am I out of luck? Any advice before I return to the jeweler to complain?
