I'm looking to collect as many specific examples as I can, of instances in which specific Republican/conservative behaviors and/or political moves have directly contradicted the teachings of Christ. Some specific examples within. [more inside]

I have heard a rumor that some people believe that Jesus traveled to India and learned Buddhist ideas. The theory is that perhaps this occurred during Jesus' early adulthood, before he started preaching during his 30s. But I am a bit skeptical. Do you know where this idea comes from? Do you think it is probable? Are there books or movies that I should watch about this theory? Any insight would be most appreciated.

I just heard the most amazing song on a streaming radio station from France! The song was in English, but there was no identification, and googling the bits of lyrics I could understand got me nowhere. Can you help me figure it out? [more inside]

My favorite album so far this year has been Emmy the Great's Virtue. Partly it's because of the thematic throughline in the lyrics, which is 'my lover left me for Jesus.' What are other songs with that theme? Also acceptable: My lover left me for Buddha/Xenu/Mohammed/Meher Baba/Aphrodite/Krishna/etc. I'm not looking for songs from the perspective of the converted, but the one who lost a lover.

In Luke 4:5 - 4:7, the devil shows Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, and says something to the effect of, "I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours." Within the Christian tradition, is there a consensus about whether the devil was lying, or whether he actually had the power to grant this boon? Do different branches of Christianity have different answers to that question? I'm looking for the authoritative opinions of Christian leaders/philosophers/theologists here, not the opinions of individual Christians of metafilter.

My teenaged son want to dress up as Jesus. He has the hair, but he wants a robe like Jesus wore. However, he doesn't want a crappy polyester costume-shop robe. Also both of us refuse to sew anything.
So -- what would be a good Jesus-robe (or just any plausible Jesuswear. This would be daywear, not Jesus eveningwear) that we could buy, in a nice natural fabric? and we're in New York City so if you have specific suggestions for stores that would be even better.

Back in the dark ages of the internets, someone forwarded me (or sent me a link to) some pencil/line drawings of a stereotypical Jesus doing some rather non-stereotypical (but not NSFW) things: playing baseball with some kids, driving a semi, etc. Each one had some pretty funny captions or speech bubbles or something like that. Not sure why, but I need to see these again. Anybody point me to them...?

A while ago, I went into a Christian bookstore and saw a poster/reprinted painting of Jesus dressed in a very colorful coat and he had a really big smile and was possibly laughing. From what I remember, the picture showed the whole body of Jesus as opposed to just his face - can anyone help me find this image? There's a best answer in it for the winner :)
BTW - The basic Google search
yielded some fine pictures, but not the one I was searching for.

Is there a specific name for the Catholic candles you can get at Mexican grocery stores? The ones in glass jars with pictures of saints, Marias, or Jesus? And can anyone tell me more about them, such as how they fit into Catholicism or their cultural resonances? I'm curious about them, and I've found remarkably little info on the internet-- which leads me to wonder if I'm not using the right search term, or if (egads!) there actually is not a website out there with information.

A Christian group claims that "Jesus"
is the most-watched movie of all time. They cite the New York Times, July 22 2003 article titled "1979 Bible Film is the Most-Watched Movie of All Time", on page "1AR". Looking through the New York Times's archives, both on the web and microfilm, I can't find the article; only an obituary for William R. Bright which mentions the film without making the claim in question. Is the article they cite real? What does AR refer to? Also, is the claim accurate?

In the Oingo Boingo song "Cry of the Vatos," Danny Elfman says (backwards): "Accept Jesus into your heart and you will saved! You will receive everlasting life! Listen to me, I've sinned, I know." Has anyone ever seen any interviews about this? Was this just a joke on the supposed backwards masking people were "finding" around that time in heavy metal music? Surely Danny Elfman doesn't really believe in God with all the weird movies and music he's put out?
