Respecting religious differences in emotionally charged conversations?

I'm an atheist. I don't wear this fact on my sleeve. Most of the time, I actively avoid religion as a conversational topic. There are some conversations, however, where you can't duck the topic, because you're providing support to someone who has experienced a personal tragedy, such as the death of a loved one, and in the course of that conversation, they will invoke their religious beliefs. The question I am posing is: how can I provide emotional support and maintain proper boundaries while respecting their beliefs and my own as well?

Recommend a reputable book on the historical Jesus?

So a friend suggested I read the recent Reza Aslan book "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth", but some of the reviews suggest there are much better (more scholarly reliable) books on the same topic. There seems to be so much crank pot literature about it out there. How do I avoid that stuff? [more inside]

WWJD: What [Boundaries] Would Jesus Designate?

Growing up Christian with a fundamentalist slant, I internalized Jesus's "turn the other cheek" teachings to mean, "don't ever set boundaries or express anger."** I'm no longer Christian, but I'm working on reclaiming my spiritual past and figuring out what to keep and what to set aside. Are there texts that interpret the teachings of Jesus through a lens of social justice/personal boundaries/feminism/activism? I'm interested in scholarly or theological texts rather than pop psychology books. [more inside]

Looking for a film about Easter for a small child

Small child paid more attention than expected at our Easter services and is now retelling us with gusto how Mary nailed Jesus to the wood and then he melted (death as understood by her from Raymond Brigg's The Snowman) and then woke up again. Only with a lot more details and blood. The story is quite mixed up in her mind because she's pieced it together from icons and gospel passages and questions we've answered. We're matter-of-fact about death etc in our household, and she's very interested in emotional narratives, so this is fascinating and confusing her. The children's bibles we have elide over the actual details of the crucifixion, and while I can and have read her the actual accounts, they're a struggle for her to follow the language. Is there a film or animation out there that includes the crucifixion and resurrection but doesn't revel in the gore like Mel Gibson, or reduce it to singing vegetables?

Did Jesus travel to India?

I have heard a rumor that some people believe that Jesus traveled to India and learned Buddhist ideas. The theory is that perhaps this occurred during Jesus' early adulthood, before he started preaching during his 30s. But I am a bit skeptical. Do you know where this idea comes from? Do you think it is probable? Are there books or movies that I should watch about this theory? Any insight would be most appreciated.

What songs are about people losing lovers to Jesus?

My favorite album so far this year has been Emmy the Great's Virtue. Partly it's because of the thematic throughline in the lyrics, which is 'my lover left me for Jesus.' What are other songs with that theme? Also acceptable: My lover left me for Buddha/Xenu/Mohammed/Meher Baba/Aphrodite/Krishna/etc. I'm not looking for songs from the perspective of the converted, but the one who lost a lover.

The devil and his puported powers

In Luke 4:5 - 4:7, the devil shows Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, and says something to the effect of, "I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours." Within the Christian tradition, is there a consensus about whether the devil was lying, or whether he actually had the power to grant this boon? Do different branches of Christianity have different answers to that question? I'm looking for the authoritative opinions of Christian leaders/philosophers/theologists here, not the opinions of individual Christians of metafilter.

What would Jesus wear on Halloween?

My teenaged son want to dress up as Jesus. He has the hair, but he wants a robe like Jesus wore. However, he doesn't want a crappy polyester costume-shop robe. Also both of us refuse to sew anything. So -- what would be a good Jesus-robe (or just any plausible Jesuswear. This would be daywear, not Jesus eveningwear) that we could buy, in a nice natural fabric? and we're in New York City so if you have specific suggestions for stores that would be even better.

Got Jesus...?

Back in the dark ages of the internets, someone forwarded me (or sent me a link to) some pencil/line drawings of a stereotypical Jesus doing some rather non-stereotypical (but not NSFW) things: playing baseball with some kids, driving a semi, etc. Each one had some pretty funny captions or speech bubbles or something like that. Not sure why, but I need to see these again. Anybody point me to them...?

Looking for a poster of Jesus

A while ago, I went into a Christian bookstore and saw a poster/reprinted painting of Jesus dressed in a very colorful coat and he had a really big smile and was possibly laughing. From what I remember, the picture showed the whole body of Jesus as opposed to just his face - can anyone help me find this image? There's a best answer in it for the winner :)

BTW - The basic Google search yielded some fine pictures, but not the one I was searching for.

Jesus; Jesuses; JesusĀ³; Jesus Resurrection; Jesus vs Predator

A Christian group claims that "Jesus" is the most-watched movie of all time. They cite the New York Times, July 22 2003 article titled "1979 Bible Film is the Most-Watched Movie of All Time", on page "1AR". Looking through the New York Times's archives, both on the web and microfilm, I can't find the article; only an obituary for William R. Bright which mentions the film without making the claim in question. Is the article they cite real? What does AR refer to? Also, is the claim accurate?
