Make the hockey jersey soft

What is the best way to soften up a hockey jersey to make it comfortable to wear without ruining its appearance? I recently purchased a couple of authentic Penguins jerseys for Mrs. Silvertree and I. We were so excited when they arrived on Saturday we popped them out of the box and wore them that day. The fabric is pretty stiff and scratchy at this point. Presumably they will soften if and when I wash them, but does anyone have any other advice? I would guess washing them is going to take its toll on appearance. Is that correct?

Where can I find a jersey like Charlie Brown's? I've been searching for a jersey like the one Charlie Brown wears for years now. I've seen a few t-shirts out there, but I want one that's closer to what he wears. I'm looking for something that's closer to a rugby shirt with the zig zag that goes all the way around the shirt.

Where can I buy an adult-sized, customized London Knights jersey? I'm a long-suffering fan of the New York Islanders, and John Tavares is the first thing I've been excited about re: the team in a long time. I have every intention of buying an Islanders jersey with his name and number on it, but I also really like the London Knights' jerseys (the team he played for most recently in the OHL), and I'd really like to get one of those with his name and number as well.

The problem I'm having is actually finding one. On the Knights' website, there is a merchandise section, but the jersey customizer at the bottom of that page only has youth sizes. The "jerseys" link in the sidebar has adult sizes, but only up to medium (I'd prefer a large), and there doesn't seem to be any way of customizing one.

Short of taking a trip to Ontario, is there a way I can get the jersey I want--a white Knights jersey, size large, with "Tavares" and "61" on the back?

Best cheap weekend beach trip from NYC in May?

What's the best (cheap, clean, warm) beach to go to in mid-May, accessible by car from NYC? I'd like to take a long weekend vacation at a beach in mid-May with a couple of good friends, but there's so much info out there on potential Jersey shore spots that I'd prefer to query the inestimable MeFi hive mind.

What we're looking for:
- Somewhere that we can drive to from NYC (max 5 hrs distant). NJ seems most likely but we're open to other places also.
- All we want to do is lay on the sand and soak up sun, so proximity to tourist stuff/amusement parks etc is OK, but definitely not required. (In fact, it's a minus if it attracts huge crowds.)
- Somewhere where it's possible to get reasonably cheap lodging. We'd like to be on or near the beach, and to be clean and safe, but we def don't need anything nice or pools/amenities etc.; we'll just be using it for sleeping & showering.
- Hopefully warm. Opinions seem to vary on if it'll be warm enough to lay out in Jersey in mid-May, but yell out if you have thoughts ...

Thanks, all! Suggestions on hotels or B&Bs you've had good experiences with are also welcome.

Tall bike jerseys?

Bike jerseys for tall people? I have an extremely long torso (I'm 6"5' and wear 32 inch inseams) and have gotten into biking. I'd like to get a jersey and a bike jacket. Outside of athletics, this can be done by buying "tall" sizes. All I can find is stuff from Aero Tech that I'm not that excited about. Any cooler stuff out there? I wear an L or an XL tshirt depending on the brand, so the "big" is far less of a concern than the "tall."

Thanks!

Buying Property on New Jersey Shore. Is it time?

I'm considering buying property on the New Jersey Shore. I like the look of some of the Sea Isle properties that are available under the million mark. The prices have come down nicely since I've been watching but I'm not sure it’s the right time to get into the real estate market yet. I've read here that it will still be some time before the prices bottom, but at the same time I don't want to miss the bottom and house prices shoot up again.

Is it a good time to buy and if so any tips for buying along the New Jersey shore?

"You know my name, look up the number"

Sports jersey questions: Why is the baseball pitcher with a single-digit number such a rarity? Why do hockey goalies usually wear 1, or something in the 30s? And why are 2-7 usually worn by defensemen? Apparently only Josh Towers (#7) and Shawn Chacon (#1) wore single-digit numbers as late as last season. I can see the old traditional numbering system in baseball attributing to this in some way (when single digits were assigned to position players), but why would it still be virtually in effect? The only thing I can think of is how prominent a pitcher's back is in a televised game, and for whatever reason, seeing a pitcher alone on the mound with a low number just "looks" weird.

From what I can tell, the NHL used to have a strict numbering system, with forwards starting at 9 on up. But like with baseball, I'm not sure why the pattern would continue to this day. Is it a matter of each successive generation of hockey players picking numbers of their idols from previous generations? Or do they just want to stick to tradition, perhaps even subconsciously?

And since forwards are often smaller than D-men, you'd think you'd see more and more of the latter straying away from the low numbers for their bigger jerseys. And surely there'd be a lot of forwards (or pitchers) who grew up liking a low number (esp "lucky 7") and would want to wear it as long as possible?

Any insights on these (esp if you play in a league), or general numbering trends in baseball, hockey, or other sports?

ShoppingFilter: baseball Jersey help. I'm looking to buy a very specific baseball jersey, either authentic or a high-quality replica. It'd be a 1960's-70's Baltimore Orioles jersey customized with the name and number (front and back) of pitcher Dave McNally. I'd like it to be a button-up jersey with sewn on numbers, either home or away. I expressly do not want the modern-day black jerseys or the pullover ones. I've been searching online and whiffing. Anyone know a good source-online or NYC-area bricks & mortar-for this item?

Jersey Cat???

Help me name my new kitty--Jersey Inspired I went to a party at a friend's home last night and, well, found a super sweet kitten and took her (I think it's a her anyway) home. The party was a bunch of folks who are originally from NJ and have landed in Austin, TX. We get together for these "Jersey nights" (where everyone -- or their spouse-- is from NJ) a few times a year. We found each other a few years back and these nights are some of the most fun of the year with plenty of Jersey-attitude to go around!

I thought it would be cute to name the new kitty with a NJ-inspired moniker. So far, all I have come up with are "Jersey", "Asbury" or "Scobey" (I am originally from Colts Neck, NJ and Scobeyville is Colt Neck's original name). If it helps, I grew up in Monmouth County near the Jersey shore, I like Bruce Springsteen, enjoyed the Sopranos, and am almost 40 years old so I remember jug handles and circles (for fellow jersey-folks).

Looking to pick the very clever hive minds for help naming my new kitty! Thanks.

Looking to purchase a Hungarian soccer jersey for a toddler. Please help! I am looking for a place online where I can purchase a Hungarian soccer jersey for a 3-year old. I Googled and found a couple of places that will sell an adult jersey, but none for kids. I would prefer if the jersey was for the Hungarian national team rather than a club team, but I'll take what I can get. Also, this wonderful online store should ship to Canada.
Where can I find a list of the sales rank of NFL jerseys?

How would you find a ranked list of professional sportsmens' jersey sales for a particular league during a particular season? For instance, where could you find a ranked list of the sales of NFL players' jerseys for 2007? I've Googled around and found various articles that list the top 20 or 25 in a particular year. That's a start, but really what I'd like is the source that those articles are based on, so I could get all the rankings, not just the top few. I'm as much interested in seeing the worst selling jerseys (spoiler: I know that the worst seller is New Orleans Saints nickelback Randall Gay) as I am in the best. Also, I'm most interested right now in the NFL — given its seasonal relevance — but I'd also be interested in seeing good data for any professional sports league.

They must be pulling that data from a list somewhere, and really what I'm interested in is seeing that list. Is it available anywhere online? Some of those articles list NFLShop.com as the source, but they don't get any more specific than that. I've looked around quite a bit on NFLShop.com but haven't found anything like this data.

I realize that it is proprietary sales data and therefore might not be available, but I feel like enough of those "This Year's Top Selling Jerseys" stories get published each year that the information must be out there, somewhere.

At worst, would it be possible to do this somehow based on, for instance, Amazon.com sales rankings? Is it possible to do a search on Amazon in such a way that it returns all the products in a category (like NFL jerseys, for instance) listed by sales rank?

Are there any other ways to get this kind of data or at least an approximation of it?

Bonus points if that list contains the actual sales figures, in addition to simply the rankings. Again, I realize that since this is proprietary sales data the chances are slim, but you never know. Again, since so many of those "This Year's Top Selling Jerseys" stories get published each year, I thought perhaps the data might be out there.

Vacationing checklist

Packing for a trip to the NJ Shore. Do you have a check list you use when you take a family vacation in a rented house/condo? more inside.... We rented a house and now I need to think of EVERYTHING we might need there. We're going Aug 1 - Aug 8. I have a husband, baby and a 13 year old. We're staying with other family (FIL, MIL, BIL, SIL (where "IL" is In Law)). Normally MIL packs everything, but this year FIL is very sick and going through chemo/radiation treatment for esophageal cancer at hospital 2 hours away in Philly. I volunteered to work with SIL to bring all that is needed for the week. I've never done this before and feel some pressure not to forget anything.

Do you have a checklist to share or any tips for me to use? Emphasis is on food stuffs, but remember we can buy things down there (Jersey veg and fruit). Bonus points for thoughtful things to bring for FIL.

Looking for traffic accident details

Is there a way to find out details about a particular traffic accident and death that occurred in New Jersey on May 11? The only additional info I have is the name of the deceased. I found out that someone I used to know has passed away due to a traffic accident of some sort. I had fun hanging out with him back in high school, and I'd like to attend the funeral or any remembrance events that might be taking place. Unfortunately I wasn't in touch with him and I don't have a way of contacting the family. I thought of trying to find any published info about the accident which might also contain further info. I didn't find much thru Google. Is there a news/government/community site or instituation that can help with such inquiries? Should I call the police - if so, which one, as I don't know the city where it happened? Thanks.

I need my Spider-Man!

I've just accepted a job in Montville, NJ, and I will probably be living somewhere within a 20-30 minute radius. Please to be recommending to me a good comic book store in the area to set up a pull box.

Israel National Team away jersey?

Where can I buy one of the new '08/'09 season Israel National Team away colors Puma jerseys, like the one pictured here? I'd like to buy one of the new versions of the Israel National Team jerseys that Puma is making for the '08/'09 season in the blue away team colors. I've been to many soccer shopping websites and all I've found are the home color jerseys or ones that don't look quite like the official ones. According to the size chart, I will probably need the XXL size, but XL might work too.

I know this is already a relatively specific request, but if I could find the jersey available at an online store that would allow me to do customizing of the name and/or number on the back as well, that would be awesome, but it's not vital.

And lastly, as a self-hijack, can anyone recommend me the best place to buy soccer jerseys in general online? There are a ton of websites out there and I don't really know who to trust.

I'm looking for a shirt Stephen Colbert held up on his show on 4/15.

Stephen Colbert was just holding up a jersey on The Colbert Report (4/15) that was: part (1/4) Flyers jersey, part Sixers jersey, part Eagles jersey, and part Phillies jersey. Like a beautiful Philadelphia sports patchwork quilt jersey shirt. Can I buy this jersey? Does it exist outside of The Colbert Report?

How does a Canadian pay US taxes for 2 months of work in NJ?

I am a Canadian who worked for two months in the NJ last year. How do I sort out my taxes in the US? I am a Canadian citizen and resident, and I worked for two months in NJ doing a research internship. Now it is time to sort out my taxes. I figured the easiest way to do it would be using some sort of online software, like Turbo Tax, but it is asking me odd questions, and it seems to be oblivious to the possibility that I am a foreigner who only worked and lived in the US for 2 months (they ask me about my other incomes throughout the year, etc).

Worse yet, when I get to the state tax portion, it insists that I enter a US state for my residence, and a postal code, although for the federal portion it allowed me to give a foreign address.

Any Canadians out there that have been in a similar situation? Can I just go to HR&Block and have them sort this shit out for me? Is it easier to just go through the forms on my own anyways, instead of using this software?

Please help ...

Where can I get 2007 MLS lettering for a Chicago Fire home jersey?

Where can I get 2007 MLS lettering for a Chicago Fire home jersey? I was given a 2007 Chicago Fire, home, replica jersey as a gift. Many places that still have the lettering refuse to sell me the MLS lettering without buying it already on a jersey. Many places also refuse to customize it due to the fact that it's not an official jersey. The lettering has changed for the 2008 season so it's getting hard to find. I'm willing to make my own if I know the font.

Where to get a jersey customized?

Where can I get a hockey jersey customized in the Madison, WI area? I recently received a very nice authentic hockey jersey as a gift and I would like to get it customized with my name and number. The jersey is the 2007 Wisconsin Badgers Men's alternate jersey (http://www.buckyslockerroom.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=5002136).

I'm a huge Badgers hockey fan and I see fans with customized jerseys all the time at the Kohl, but I haven't bothered to ask anyone where they got theirs customized. Any ideas where I can take a brand new jersey to get a nameplate and numbers sewn on in the Madison area? I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

Is there an inexpensive source of hockey jerseys and/or lettering/numbering for said jerseys? If it's a bricks and mortar store, I'm in Chicago. I'm willing to buy a replica as long as it looks nice. Specifically I want to get a Patrick Kane Blackhawks jersey. I'm not sure if it'd be cheaper to get a jersey from one place and have another place letter it, but I'm sure there's gotta be some hockey fans out there who've found some good deals.

For reference: An authentic jersey from sources I've found is typically $249, plus $60 more for personalization.

It's between $85 and $115 or so for a replica, and still $60 for personalization.

Things to do in central New Jersey when you are on your own.

I am in New Jersey (living in New Brunswick/ working closer to Princeton) for a another month (for work), without a car, and don't really know anyone in the area. How do I keep my sanity? I have been in the area for a month, and will be staying for another month. I have been basically going from home to work and back, and I think I had about enough. My mobility is severely limited for the lack of car, but I imagine there should still be options -- I just can't figure out what.

I am basically looking for suggestions of what I can do to meet people without having a friend/acquaintance to give me an "in", or to just have some fun, keep my mind busy in a non-work sorta way. I tried looking for a pick-up game of ultimate frisbee, but the online searches turn up nothing. Meetup is not very helpful either -- it seems like all the groups are based in NYC, but if you can prove me wrong, I more than welcome it. I am considering going to yoga, because I need to improve my flexibility, but I kinda doubt yoga is a place to make friends. I am willing to rent a car once a week maybe, but I'd need other things to do without a car as well.

I am 30, finishing my PhD, if that helps.

If you have specific suggestion about the area, that would be really great, but if you general suggestions that would be cool too.
