Levi's Has Forsaken Me

What brand of jeans should I buy? I have been wearing Mens Levi's 527 jeans (low rise, boot cut) for years and they have stopped making my size. What other brands sell jeans of a similar cut in my size? I wear a 31" Waist, 34" Inseam.

Where to shop for wallet-emptying denim?

What's the best place to find premium denim near Bucks County, Pennsylvania? I'm in southeastern Bucks County, PA and in the market for my first pair of ridiculously expensive jeans - I'm thinking 7 for All Mankind, Citizens, and the like. Where will I find the widest selection and best service (I'll need some help with getting the right fit) within an hour of here? I am midway between King of Prussia and Menlo Park Malls - they're both about an hour away. Bonus points for something closer!

Sleeping, shopping, and, err, safety in New York

I'm a 19-year-old female going to New York, alone, for a night. I would like to shop, have fun but preferably not get injured/mugged/killed. I'm heading to NYC for a few days at the end of the week. While I will be with friends for most of the trip, on Thursday (the 17th) I'll be staying alone in a hostel. (I'm uncomfortable giving out the exact name, but its very close to the Empire State Building.) Questions I have:

* So I'm 19 and female. The hostel I'm staying in is a co-ed dorm style. Should I be worried? What should I do to keep myself/my possessions safe? I plan to be in the hotel (it has a restaurant and internet access) by dark because I'm not comfortable alone in NYC at night (sorry, small town Midwest girl here). Any other tips?

* Are there any under-21 friendly events, festivals, etc. going on Thursday, either during the day or in that area?

* Shopping-wise: I need a new pair (or two, or three) of jeans. Where can I find quality denim (I'm a fan of Sevens, but anything of that caliber works) for reasonably cheap? At the very least, not full-price. Last time I was there I really enjoyed Strawberry -- anything more like that?

H&M LAD from NYC to H-Town

Is there any way for me to buy H&M LAD fit jeans in the South? I recently took a trip to New York and took the opportunity to shop at H&M. There are NO H&Ms in Texas, where I live, and the closest one is many hundreds of miles away, so it was a neat thing for me. The jeans there, the LAD fit, fit PERFECTLY. They are the first pair of jeans I have liked that much since a very expensive pair of couture jeans I bought once used at a resale shop, but at half the price.

I've been watching eBay, but there don't seem to be any pairs in my size showing up. H&M also has no catalog or internet sales. Is there some way, aside from making a friend in NYC and sending a check, that I can get more of these pants?

Alternately, does anyone know a pair of jeans that fit JUST LIKE the LAD jeans that I could find in Houston, that would sell in the sub-$40 range?

Denim jeans that fit. How hard can it be?

Where in the UK can I find women's jeans that fit me? Levis high-waisted styles fit in the waist and hips, but anything labelled 'skinny' or 'slim' does not agree with my thighs. And I would really prefer something 100% cotton, but at this point I'll try pretty much anything. It seems that most styles I find are either cut so low as to reveal my appendectomy scar, or gape so much in the back that I have a builder's bum without even trying. Or both. And what is with stretch denim?

My last pair of Levis came from a charity shop in excellent condition, but have now succumbed to the inevitable. My current best-fitting jeans were stolen from my brother. I've been to a Levis store, but the two high-waisted styles they have are too tight for comfort on my legs.

Skinny jeans for a big butt?

My best beloved wants a pair of jeans she can wear her boots over top of. She can't seem to find a pair that fits right... How weird is this? I'm asking style advice for my bride-to-be, because she's too shy to ask anyone herself.

She has a body shape that has blessed her with an ample bottom, but exceptionally slender legs. She's not heavy at all... she's got hourglass curves like a 40's pinup.

She likes the look of knee-high boots over tight jeans (as do I, hence my eagerness to ask this question on her behalf) but the jeans that fit her are all boot-cut or wide leg, and don't look right with boots zipped up over them. Skinny leg jeans that accommodate her hips are too loose around the waist and downright baggy around the legs.

Are there any brands/styles that are designed to fit her bodyshape? She's not prepared to shell out megabucks for this, either. (She has a boot addiction to feed.)

It All Went Downhill Once Luke Brower Moved In

My blue jeans look like they belong to Kirk Cameron. When I wear jeans on weekends, I wear Levis 505s (yes, they are still manufactured!). I have been wearing the same size and brand since 1985. They may even be stonewashed. I am a married, urban, professional male in my mid 30's, and I shouldn't be dressing like Mike Seaver. To what kind of jeans should I upgrade? I would wear them only on weekends, never to work. I would like to look my age without looking like I haven't updated my wardrobe since Frank Bartles and Ed Jaymes ruled the zeitgeist. I'm not terribly price sensitive. Or stylish. Suggestions? Thank you for your support.

One of these things is not like the other...

Has anyone else ever encountered jeans with one "misaligned" leg (i.e., the seams seem to twist around)? What's this all about? I regularly try on (and occasionally unwittingly buy) jeans that have one leg with seams that don't match up to those on the other leg. The entire leg seems to be misaligned somehow so that the inside seam is either twisted towards the front or the back of my leg. It generally starts about the knee and gets really pronounced by the time it gets to the hem.

A) Please tell me I'm not alone in noticing this! (And being extremely irritated by it!)

B) What causes this to happen? I've encountered jeans like this at Uniqlo, H&M, Urban Outfitters - even Seven jeans!

C) Is there any way to either fix or reverse it?

Alternatives to Seven jeans?

Male, not wanting to shell out $200 for another pair of Seven's, seeks lower-priced alternative to their Standard cut. So, a friend introduced me to higher-end designer jeans. Seven's standard (straight leg) cut fits me perfectly (so she says; my wife agrees). I now have $400 worth of jeans in two pairs, which is probably more than I've ever spent on all the jeans I've purchased to date.

I know that, in some cases, you're paying for the better fit, but are there any lower-priced alternatives to Sevens in "Standard" cut (not A-pocket or any of the others) out there for men that have similar fit characteristics (not too baggy, lower rise, etc.) that folks could recommend based on actually having owned, seen, or worn a pair (as opposed to having googled for the answer)?

Help me understand my pants

Short waisted? Long waisted? How do you find out? I *think* I'm short waisted, since the crotch on most of my pants and tights hangs down to my knees. How do you measure? Where oh where could I find pants that don't either show my posterior or make me feel like M. C. Hammer? Please help me settle this once and for all. I have a huge problem with pants (and tights, but that will never be fixed I think). I don't understand this long and short waisted thing. I do know that I have a better relationship with jeans now that lower waists have become common. I think I might be VERY short waisted, but I have long legs. So I'm confused.
Can you get jeans tailored to fix the rise or is that impossible?
Do you have any suggestions for best places to shop? Best styles to try? Perhaps styles that don't expose all my callipygian charms?
Perhaps just return to wearing skirts all the time?

Where can I buy women's blue jeans without "stretch" for under $50 in the US? I'll go to chains, web sites, or retailers that are local to Portland, Ore. Looking for women's size 6 or 8. I used to love the Gap's "long and lean" style. I also like most other jeans that go up to just below the belly button and have wide ankles. I HATE stretch for so many reasons that I could write a book, and as a result I don't have any blue jeans for the first time in my adult life. Are there any stores that sell non-stretch denim in decent cuts? Does non-stretch denim even exist any more?

Nothing fits!

I can't dress myself. After two babies in four years I have too much tummy and waist and not enough tush, and I'm unable to find jeans that fit. When they fit in the waist they are too big everywhere else (and vice versa - can you say muffin top?). I'm 5'6" and have relatively thin legs, if that helps. Please recommend styles and brands of jeans and pants that might fit my unfortunate body type!

"professional" jeans for a programmer

Calling all jeans experts -- tailored/neat/professional-looking jeans for a guy: custom? tapered leg? brand? other advice? I want to show him off! My delightful man has just worn out three pairs of jeans simultaneously! Oh, golden fashion opportunity! As I write this, he is at the mall, doubtless picking up yet another pair of slightly-baggy Levi's. I'd like to do better.

We are both mid-30s. I read some earlier threads (no pun intended) on jeans here, and based on such advice, we looked at some Diesels and other jeans at Nordstrom. Shouldn't have been surprised to discover that we are Not That Trendy.

Very fashionable jeans are probably out of the question. Even I am not comfortable with the uneven thigh-highlighting fading that seems to be part of all "modern" jeans; he likes the waist essentially at his waist, thank you very much, and boot cut just looks ridiculous to us; none of this would go with the rest of the wardrobe anyway. Still, I'm hoping to achieve subtle fit and quality improvements to this wardrobe staple.

He wears jeans every single day. He works as a programmer, so it's OK, but I think it's reasonable to try for jeans that look more... tailored? fitted? neat? But not too obviously out of line with the general programmer aesthetic.

Sooooooo... With his permission, I'm currently working up some custom jeans on the LandsEnd.com site. Going for the indigo color with the contrasting stitching, though I wish they wouldn't have contrasting stitching. Lighter colors have matching stitching, but I think the dark blue would be good.

He wanted the fifth "coin" pocket. Fine.

He wants straight leg rather than tapered. I can kind of understand this; I found an earlier AskMe thread that indicated that tapered was out. But based on a few images I've seen, straight leg looks baggy and sloppy to me, and he's a skinny guy! We usually get 31" waist and 32" inseam.

Other info: He's also become a recent CrossFit.com addict, and his thighs, while generally skinny (though he's always been fit), seem to be getting bigger.

He pretty much refuses to consider wearing other types of pants (especially khakis). Maybe corduroys sometime. But we're focusing on jeans now.

Can anyone recommend jeans that fit well and look "professional" [I'm hoping you can infer the actual meaning of "professional" from the above description]. Interested in your color recommendations, brands, style details (straight vs. tapered), and so forth.

If you think this is not achievable, I'd be interested in one or two comments to that effect, but I'd still like to do the best we can.

Blue shirt with blue jeans?

When is it (if ever) fashionable to wear a blue shirt with blue pants - particularly blue jeans? It seems always wrong to me or at least a labyrinthian puzzle far beyond my clothing wisdom, but I feel like I have seen it pulled off with dash and cunning.

Does skin tone matter? If extra non-blue layers can make it work, what colors create a requirement for the minimal number of those layers? I want to know everything there is to know about blue-on-blue.

I realize the collective pool on Metafilter is a bit on the deep-side of nerdy, but I'd like to hear from any geeked-out, closet fashionistas...

If it is possible, give me RGB values or a kuler swatch.

Flapping fly

How can I get the fly of my jeans to stop folding open and exposing the zipper? I'm a female that's been purchasing jeans at the Gap for quite some time. I've never had this problem before, but the most recent pair of jeans that I bought has an issue: the flap on the fly won't sit down straight. It folds open and shows the zipper, and this drives me crazy. I don't want to stop wearing these pants and waste them (I buy jeans maybe once a year, and I'm not about to go buy another pair) but ironing didn't help, and neither did weighing down the fly with heavy books after washing. Is the fly sewn improperly; if so, is there something I can do to repair it? I own a sewing machine and I'm pretty handy, but I don't even know if that would help. What should I do?

What stores (in the U.S.) carry reasonably-priced jeans for VERY skinny guys? My son just turned 15 and is in the middle of a growth-spurt (but it's all height, not weight). He looks like a concentration camp survivor, but he's very healthy and energetic. All of his jeans are too short and we're having a very difficult time finding anything in his size. Two salesgirls at the mall helped him figure out his exact size: 29 waist and 34 length/inseam (which, alas, their store didn't carry). So far we've struck out at Sears, JC Penney, Old Navy, Walmart and Target. We found a few styles in that size at the higher-end stores, but they're really out of our price range for something he's likely to outgrow in another couple of months. Most stores carry plenty of styles for skinny girls, but not so much for skinny guys. He likes cargo-style jeans and khakis, and I'd like to find them for under $30 a pair (preferably not online, because he's very concerned about making sure things feel okay and wants to "try before we buy").

How much for a pair of jeans?

Is it worth it to spend lots of money (like, $200) on a pair of jeans? If so, why?

bool find_match(shirt *, jeans *){}

Does this look okay? I'm trying to dress for going out tonight. Can I wear this shirt and jeans together, or is it too much grey? Today's pretty bright outside, and the sun won't set for a while.

I know, this is dumb, but I don't have any sense about things like this. Really, my main goal in any social situation is to just try and blend in with the other humans, and I can't even do that reliably.

When I'm in charge, I'm going to abolish clothing. We'll all just wear single colour space unitards. It will be all kinds of awesome.

the best jeans in the world

Where can I get these jeans online? Levi's is out of my size (4) and preferred color (blue press) in these jeans. I've tried googling and ebaying but that only turns up with the Juniors version of these jeans which are similar but really not the same.

I want size 4(27) or, if impossible, size 6(28). I do not want Junior's sizes.

Can you help me find these?

how to care for selvage denim

Selvage denim: care and feeding I bought a pair of Gap jeans and they had a little metal tag that said they were "Selvage" and the inner waistband says that they're Japanese denim. Do they require special care and feeding? I Googled the jean name (Gough) and found a bunch of advice from forums for jean nerds but there's so much lexicon there that I'm totally lost.

In short: are there best practices for these pants? If so, what are they?

How can I lighten or fade blue jeans without using bleach?

How can I lighten or fade blue jeans without using bleach? I own three pairs of similarly colored blue jeans from Aéropostale and I'd like to add variety to my wardrobe by lightening a couple pairs. I'm trying to avoid bleach because it's corrosive and I'm afraid it'll turn the jeans orange. I've tried using Rit Color Remover and Rit Whitener & Brightener but neither had an effect. Apparently, a product called Rit Fast Fade used to exist but is no longer with us. What should I do?

Where oh where have my beloved pants gone?

PantsFilter (mens division): It took me 30 years to find a cut of jeans that I think are comfortable and stylish enough. And then Levi's discontinued the 567s.
These were seriously the only jeans that I have ever been comfortable in. (Tight enough in the places they needed to be, didn't look loose, but where loose enough not to trap my keys in my pockets and didn't tie my junk in knots.)

Anyone have any alternatives for a reasonably skinny 6ft 160 pound guy who wants slightly loose jeans? I'd rather not spend another 30+ years trying to find comfy ones.

Extra difficulty: No online stores or Big Box brands.

Jeans are turning my legs blue!

I recently bought new jeans, but they turn anything that rubs against them blue -- including my legs and hands! I've already washed them, to no avail. What can I do? The jeans are Old Navy painter's jeans, and they're quite dark in color. The laundry instructions say to wash only in cold water, which is what I've done so far (the color doesn't seem to run in the wash, in any event). I don't care if they fade. Is there anything I can do that would allow me to wear these jeans without comical, potentially embarrassing results?
